CLOSER THAN YOU THINK
You may have seen stories on television about puppy
mills or animal cruelty. Pictures of sick or starving dogs
and cats are all over the internet, and the Animal Planet
network features shows about mistreated, neglected pets
kept in filthy surroundings. As much as these images
may tear at your heart, deplorable circumstances such as
these exist much closer to your doorstep than you may
realize. The Humane Society
of Jefferson County regularly
deals with owners and
breeders who inflict pain and
misery on their animals. The
following is a brief summary
of just one such situation.
Beginning in 1999, the
HSJC took in 25 malnourished
cats and kittens from a local
breeder. In 2001, this same
individual surrendered 2 dogs
and 13 cats to the shelter; once
again, the animals were
suffering from disease and
malnutrition. Although law
enforcement forbade this
person from owning any more
pets, phone calls continued to
come in to the shelter from people who had witnessed
appalling acts of cruelty to the animals still in this
person’s possession.
In 2006, the HSJC accompanied the Police
Department to a home in Jefferson where 2 rottweilers,
12 boxers, 3 shih tzu’s, 1 ferret, 1 flying squirrel, 13 cats,
36 guinea pigs and 40 birds were being kept in horrible
conditions by this same individual. Although the person
was cited for not licensing or vaccinating the dogs, no
animals were removed from the home. (The HSJC has
no policing powers and so cannot order the surrender of

well loved by his new owners and “brother” Dempsey.

any animals without the support of law enforcement or
the judiciary system). Later that same year, this person
moved to another town in Jefferson County and continued
to breed and sell puppies.
Several months after a 2009 County hearing, in which
this person was ordered to relinquish ownership of all but
four dogs, the HSJC took in 14 cats and 3 rabbits who
had been living in a barn in
subzero temperatures without
adequate food or water. Two
dogs were observed shivering
in this barn, and several caged
cats and small dogs were in the
house. Four cockatiels lay
dead at the bottom of their
dirty cages. Additionally,
twenty horses suffering from
starvation were surrendered;
some were as much as 200
pounds underweight.
Although ordered to cease
breeding, this person soon had
ads in local newspapers
regarding dachshund, shih tzu
and husky puppies for sale,
along with “free” kittens. The
HSJC received calls concerning boxers and huskies
locked in a horse trailer on this person’s property.
Finally, in July of 2010, the Sheriff’s Department
seized 16 dogs and 10 cats and kittens from the property.
One dog was dead at the scene and at least two others
were pregnant. Another had recently given birth and all
of her young puppies had been given to a “friend” of the
owner. The cats and kittens had been locked in the
basement and were starving; some had perished and were
decomposing.

Dear Ben,
A friend of mine was recently laid off from a job she had held for two decades.
She is financially in a real bind and I know that she surrendered her pets to the
shelter. Is it getting harder for the HSJC to keep operating in this economic
mudslide? Are you seeing more animals because of it? How can we help?
Worried in Waterloo
Dear WW,
Make no mistake about it, times are tough all over. My pals here at the shelter
have fielded more and more calls from good people who are struggling to put food on the table (and in the bowl on
the floor). Cash donations are down and appeals are coming up shorter than usual. The shelter has been helping out
people in a temporary bind by giving extra donated food in an attempt to keep pets and people together. One way you
can help is to donate food to the shelter. If we don’t use it here we will pass it forward to individuals, other shelters,
or rescue groups who often times operate on a shoestring. Another way you can help is to bring your aluminum cans
to the shelter and drop them in the “Cans for Critters” bin. Recycling is a way for the shelter to make money and to
help the environment. A third way you can help is to drop an extra coin or two in the canister banks that are in
businesses all over the county. If we all help each other we can get through these hard times!

participating partner are both in jail for violating parole. After eleven long years, the cycle of cruelty and
noncompliance may at last be broken. Our fear, however, is that the cycle
has merely been interrupted, as history has shown these individuals to be
heedless of the law and of the wretchedness they impose on innocent
animals.
Fortunately, over the years the HSJC has been able to rehabilitate the
great majority of animals seized in these situations and adopt them into
good new homes. It is a testament to the forgiving nature of pets that
despite the ill treatment they have received, most remain eager for human
companionship and want more than anything to be part of a loving
family. Placing formerly abused animals with caring and responsible
owners is one of the most important and rewarding aspects of the work
we do here at the HSJC. Our gratification is shared by those kind people
whose donations to the shelter make happy outcomes like this possible.
While this particular saga may hopefully have come to an end, the
war is not over. The sad reality is that these situations occur with
alarming frequency and many thousands of pets continue to suffer.
Nikita and Max endured great hardship at the hands of their owner.
They are now living happily together in a wonderful new home.

described as “the best cat in the world” by his
adopter, Adam.
The Humane Society of Jefferson County
strongly opposes puppy mills because animals
purchased from self-proclaimed “breeders” or
pet stores are often born and housed in
circumstances much like those described here.
Such horrific conditions are not exclusive to one
individual or locality. These heartbreaking
scenarios exist right now, today, much closer to
home than you may have thought.

Linda Erdman
Linda’s incredible
work ethic and positive
attitude have made her
one of our “go to” volunteers. We know that we can rely
on her thoroughness and proficiency, whether she’s
assisting the animal caregivers or helping out at a special
event. Linda sees what needs to be done and jumps right
in to get things accomplished (a trait that is highly
valued by the HSJC staff!)
Linda enjoys camping and cooking, and along with
her husband, Andy, is a lifelong resident of Ft. Atkinson.
She shares her home with a chocolate lab named Sadie
and a recently adopted Plott hound named Orson.
Linda’s focus as a volunteer is to support the
hardworking and devoted staff and, of course, to help
homeless pets. We offer our sincere thanks and
gratitude for all that she does to make life better for
animals in need.

After 10 years of dedicated service,
animal caregiver Corky Lupei recently retired
from the Humane Society of Jefferson
County. Corky has provided care for
thousands of cats and kittens during his tenure
at the shelter. His calm and gentle demeanor
has been a reliable source of stability for these
homeless felines, who often feel shy and
stressed in a shelter environment. Corky was
familiar with all of their individual
personalities and treated each of them with
the kindness and respect they deserved.
The entire staff of the HSJC is very grateful that he chose to dedicate
such a large part of his life to helping animals in need. On behalf of the
many, many pets who have benefited from his devoted service, we say
thank you, Corky. We wish you all the best and we'll miss you!

MAKE HOLIDAYS FUN FOR YOUR DOG

Holidays can be stressful for dogs. Visitors arrive, perhaps with dogs. We
travel to visit relations, sometimes taking our dogs, sometimes boarding them.
Make sure to plan ahead to help your dog cope.
Set up a routine for visitors to meet your dog. If your dog is shy, ask
visitors to ignore him and allow him to approach them on his own time. If
your dog is bold, put her on leash so she doesn’t jump on them. If visitors
bring a dog, allow the dogs to meet first in a neutral area and only off-leash
if safe.
Traveling with your dog? Ginger (biscuits or smelling fresh ginger)
helps prevent car sickness. Bring familiar blankets and toys, and plenty of
water.
Boarding your dog? Visit kennels early to pick your favorite. Book
your dog in for a half day and see how it goes. Treats, toys and affection
will help make it a good experience.
WHOA, ROVER!

Before you switch your “Heel” cue to “Mush,” try
these tricks to teach your dog to walk nicely on leash.
Teach your dog to walk next to you off leash. Grab
some treats and stroll down the back yard, rewarding her
each time she ends up next to you. Turn in a new direction,
encourage her to follow and reward again.
Play follow me. Put him on leash and start walking.
Reward with treats and praise when he walks next to you.
If he gets ahead, turn and walk in the opposite direction.
Reward when he catches up to you.
She’s a dog, not a fish. Avoid pulling back on the leash
or reeling in your dog. Use your brain, not the leash, to train
her.
Set reasonable expectations. Don’t try for a perfect
heel for the entire walk. Let your dog sniff and enjoy his
environment as long
as he is not dragging
you behind him like
a sled.

CAT OR KITTEN?
With their round little faces, oversized ears and big, bright
eyes, kittens are simply adorable. Their cuteness quotient can
make them hard to resist, but careful consideration of some
important points could help you determine that a teenaged or
adult cat may be a better choice for your family.
Kittens are famous for their nonstop energy and over the
top activity level. They require a great deal of supervision
to keep them safely entertained and out of harm’s way. Be
prepared to kitten-proof your home and remain vigilant for
potential hazards. In contrast, adult cats still like to play but
aren’t in high gear all the time. They don’t need constant monitoring and do quite well on
their own in the house while you work.
Kittens can play pretty rough and may make you or your children the targets of their sharp teeth and claws. At the
same time, kittens are fragile and can be accidentally hurt by young children who don’t really understand how to be
gentle. An adult cat with a mellow disposition can be very tolerant and child friendly. They’ve also outgrown the
impulse to chew on everything and attack anything that moves – including your fingers and feet.
Kittens have fewer social boundaries and may pester any pets you already own. While an outgoing cat may enjoy
rediscovering its inner kitten by playing with a youngster, a timid or territorial cat won’t appreciate being pounced on
by a tiny whirling dervish. An adult cat who is introduced into your home will generally be more respectful and act
accordingly, interacting or keeping a polite distance away as your resident cat dictates.
To varying degrees, most kittens are sweet and cuddly. However, that endearing kitten attitude doesn’t always
carry over into adulthood and it’s possible that your furry baby may become much less social and snuggly as he or
she matures. If you’re looking for an affectionate, friendly or gentle cat, your best bet may be an adult who possesses
those qualities. When it comes to personality, what you see is what you get with an adult cat. While an adult cat’s
character may be set, his affections aren’t – a grown cat bonds with you just as strongly as a kitten does. In fact, adult
cats may be more enthralled with you for taking them in.
In only a few short months, a kitten becomes a cat. Look carefully at your daily schedule and living situation
when considering the extra effort and responsibility involved in raising a kitten. Whether you choose to adopt a cat
or a kitten, please remember that there are many deserving felines at the HSJC waiting for homes. We’d love to help
you find a wonderful new companion – no matter what its age!
