HAZARDS IDENTIFICATIONToxicity:Acute inhalation: Inhalation of dicyclohexylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanateat concentrations above theTLV can irritate (burning sensation) the mucousmembranes in the respiratory tract (Nose, throat, lungs) causing runny nose, sore throat, coughing, chest discomfort, shortness of breath and reducedlung function (breathing obstruction). Personswith a preexisting, nonspecific bronchialhyperreactivity can respond to concentrationsbelow the TLV with similar symptoms as well asasthma attack. Exposure well above the TLV maylead to bronchitis, bronchial spasm and pulmonaryedema (fluid in lungs). These effects are usually

HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION (continued)reversable. Chemical or hypersensitive pneumonitiswith flu-like symptoms (e.g., fever, chills) hasalso been reported.Chronic inhalation: As a result of previousrepeated overexposures or a single large dosecertain individuals develop isocyanatesensitization (chemical asthma) which will causethem to react to a later exposure to isocyanate atlevels well below the TLV. These symptoms, whichcan include chest tightness, wheezing, cough, shortness of breath or asthma attack, could beimmediate or delayed (up to several hours afterexposure). Similar to many non-specific asthmaticresponses, there are reports that once sensitizedan individual can experience these symptoms uponexposure to dust, cold air, or other irritants. This increased lung sensitivity can persist forweeks and in severe cases for several years.Overexposure to isocyanates has also been reportedto cause lung damage (including decrease in lungfunction) which may be permanent. Sensitizationcan either be temporary or permanent.Acute skin contact: Dicyclohexylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate is a primary skin irritant. Itreacts with protein and moisture and can causeirritation. Symptoms of skin irritation include:redness, swelling, rash, scaling and blistering.Dicyclohexylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate is also apotent sensitizer. Experience indicates thatdirect contact is the route of exposure mostlikely to cause sensitization. Once sensitized,an individual may react even to airborne levelsbelow the TLV with the following symptoms:itching and tingling or the earlobes and neck, rash, hives, swelling of the arms and legs orother symptoms common to allergic dermatitis. These symptoms may be immediate or delayed.Chronic skin contact: Prolonged contact can causereddening, swelling, rash, scaling, blistering andin some cases, skin sensitization. Individuals whohave skin sensitization can develop these symptomsfrom contact with liquid or vapor. Animal testshave indicated that respiratory sensitization canresult from skin contact with dicyclohexylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate.

ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES (continued)7. HANDLING AND STORAGEfor 48 hours to let carbon dioxide escape.Clean-up: Decontaminate floor with decontaminationsolution letting stand for at least 15 minutes.Safe Storage:Store between 77°F and 122°F. Store in tightlyclosed containers to prevent moisturecontamination. Do not reseal if contamination issuspected. At maximun storage temperatures noted, material may slowly polymerize without hazard.ideal storage range is 86°F-104°F. Avoid contactwith eyes and skin.Special Sensitivity: If container is exposed totemperatures above 122°F, such as a firesituation, it can be pressurized and possiblyrupture violently. Dicyclohexylmethane-4,4'-diisocyanate reacts slowly with water to formcarbon dioxide gas. Production of this gas cancause sealed containers to expand and possiblerupture explosively.(Contact Loctite Customer Service 1-800-243-4874 for shelf life information)Handling:Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Do not breathevapor or mists.8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTIONEyes:Skin:Ventilation:Safety glasses, splash goggles or face shield.Contact lenses should not be worn.Any area of skin that could potentially come incontact with this material, must be covered by apermeation resistant barrier (i.e. rubber gloves, neoprene apron, chemical suit, etc.) When there isa potential for splash, a full chemical suit isrequired. When the application results in vaporor mist, a full permeation resistant suitincluding head covering, and face shield, gloves, and overshoes is required.Local exhaust should be used to maintain levelsbelow the TLV when material is processed, heatedor spray applied. Standard reference sourcesregarding industrial ventilation (i.e., ACGIHIndustrial Ventilation) should be consulted forguidance about adequate ventilationMonotoring: Isocyanate exposure levels must be monitored. Monitoringof airborne isocyanates in the breathing zone of individuals shouldbecome part of the overall employee exposure characterization program.

EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTION (continued)Monitoring techniques have been developed by NIOSH and OSHA. Uponrequest the manufacturer can make available methods which aremodifications of these NIOSH and OSHA methods.Medical Surveillance: Medical supervision of all employees who handleor come in contact with isocyanates is recommended. These shouldinclude preemployment and periodic medical examinations withpulmonary function tests (FEV, FVC as a minimum). Persons withasthmatic-type conditions, chronic bronchitis, or other chronicrespiratory diseases or recurrent skin eczema or sensitization shouldbe excluded from working with isocyanates. Once a person is diagnosedas sensitized to an isocyanate, no further exposure can be permitted.RespiratoryIn some situations, a respirator may be necessaryin addition to ventilation. The use of a positivepressure air-supplied respirator is mandatorywhen: airborne concentration of isocyanate areknown to exceed 0.005 ppm; operations areperformed in a confined space or area withlimited ventilation; material is heated orsprayed. An air-purifying respirator is notgenerally recommended based on the poor warningproperties of the isocyanate.9.
