oslo panorama (2.5 hours)<br />

We will drive through the city centre where we will pass by the HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT, the<br />

NATIONAL THEATRE, the UNIVERSITY and the ROYAL PALACE. Passing through the elegant<br />

west-end of the city, we will arrive at VIGELANDS PARK where we will take a walk through the<br />

wonderful collection of over 200 sculptures created by Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943). Back on the<br />

bus we will continue up to one of the hills surrounding the city and visit the HOLMENKOLLEN Ski<br />

Jump. This newly-built ski jump is the arena for the World Championships in Nordic Events in 2011.<br />

From here we can experience breathtaking views out over the city and the fjord.<br />

Commencing with a tour of the city centre, we will then visit the VIKING SHIPS MUSEUM. Here<br />

we can see 3 of the world’s best preserved chieftains’ burial ships from around the year 800 AD<br />

together with their rich contents. These ships were found after being buried for over 1,000 years.<br />

After a short drive, we will visit the FRAM MUSEUM housing the world’s strongest wooden<br />

ship. This polar ship holds the record of having sailed furthest North and furthest South on its<br />

expeditions with Nansen from 1893 to 1896 and with Amundsen from 1910 to 1911. It is also<br />

possible to go onboard and see the interior of the ship.<br />

The KON-TIKI MUSEUM displays the original vessels and artifacts from Thor Heyerdahl’s famous<br />

expeditions. We will hear all about his crossing the Pacifi c in 1947 with the balsa raft Kon-Tiki, the<br />

sailing over the Atlantic with the papyrus ship Ra II in 1970 and see a model of his reed boat Tigris.<br />

At the NORWEGIAN MARITIME MUSEUM we will enjoy a unique panoramic fi lm where we will<br />

experience an aerial voyage of coastal Norway from north to south.<br />

Walking Tour: THe opera House anD akersHus forTress (2.5 hours)<br />

The OPERA HOUSE, which was opened in 2008, is the home of the Norwegian Opera and Ballet.<br />

It is one of the world’s most spectacular opera houses with a fantastic location in the sea. You<br />

will have the opportunity of taking a walk on the roof where there is a wonderful view over the<br />

city and the fjord and also to go inside and see the beautiful foyer with its many works of art.<br />

From here we will take a short walk to the AKERSHUS FORTRESS. This medieval fortress from<br />

the 13th century was remodeled into a renaissance castle in the fi rst half of the 17th century.<br />

Today the beautiful banqueting halls are used by the Norwegian government for state functions.<br />

culTural HeriTage Tour (3 hours)<br />

After a drive through the city centre seeing most of the important buildings in Oslo, we will drive to<br />

the peninsula of Bygdøy and visit the NORWEGIAN MUSEUM OF CULTURAL HISTORY. This openair<br />

museum has 155 traditional buildings from many different regions of Norway, including the Gol<br />

Stave church from the 11th century, giving us a unique view of the cultural history of Norway. We<br />

can also see some of the buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries from the city of Christiania.<br />

We will also visit the VIKING SHIPS MUSEUM where 3 of the world’s best preserved chieftains’<br />

burial ships are on display together with their rich contents. These ships were built around the<br />

year 800 AD and have been lying buried in the ground for nearly 1,000 years before being found.<br />

Walking Tour: THe painTings of eDVarD muncH anD<br />

THe Henrik ibsen museum (3 hours)<br />

After a walk through the city centre along the Karl Johan’s street, where we will see all the important<br />

buildings in Oslo, we will visit the home of HENRIK IBSEN. He lived here the latter years of<br />

his life until his death in 1906. To commemorate the centenary of his death, the apartment has<br />

been restored to be as similar as possible to the original. His study has all his original furniture.<br />

A short walk will take us to the National Gallery where we can admire the paintings of EDVARD<br />

MUNCH. One of the main halls contains many of his original works including his best-known<br />

painting ”The Scream”.<br />
