from the University PresidentDon ZillmanThis has been a year rich inachievement and rich in planning forachievements in the future for theUniversity of Maine at Presque Isle.A significant highlight was UMPI’snational recognition by the SecondNature organization for being the outstanding baccalaureatepublic university for its achievements in renewableenergy and sustainability. We were joined on the winners’platform by such well known schools as theUniversity of Pennsylvania, Cornell University, and theUniversity of California at San Diego. While our windturbine venture was the most visible indicator of ourcommitment we can make mention of other renewableenergy programs and a growing academic program inthe area. It is wonderful to see UMPI taking a lead rolein this important area.Renewable energy also drives our renovation ofPullen Hall, which is ongoing as I write. Upon completionthis August, Pullen will match its companion structureFolsom Hall, which we renovated in 2008. Awealth of improvements and upgrades to windows,heating and cooling systems, floors and ceilings willgive the building an up-to-date and attractive look. Itwill also allow us many energy savings. Two new technologieswill highlight the renovation. On the rooftopsolar photovoltaic panels will provide a good portion ofthe electricity for Pullen. In the basement, a biomassboiler will replace imported oil with Maine grown andmade wood pellets to provide heating for the building.Two federal grants and the proceeds from the mostrecent state bond election will provide most of the dollarsfor this $2.2 million dollar project. Upon completion,we will have our major classroom building in avery attractive and energy efficient state.Faculty members continue to teach superbly, toresearch and write on important matters in their disciplines,and to serve the broader community in manyways. Our work takes us to Tanzania, Iceland, China,the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom among otherplaces. It also keeps us close at home in Caribou, FortFairfield, Houlton, and Presque Isle. And, on many ofthese research projects and travels, we are joined by ourstudents who continue to give new meaning to the term“engaged learning.”We enjoy learning about the many accomplishmentsof our alumni in Maine, the United States, and aroundthe world.
