ENVIRONMENTAL EVALUATION OFHOUSEHOLD WASTE MANAGEMENTSYSTEM IN SOUTHERN GERMANYN. ESCALANTE*, M. KRANERT** AND G.HAFNER*** Civil and Environemental Engineering Department, Universidad de los Andes,Bogotá, Colombia**University of Stuttgart, Institute of Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality andSolid Waste Management (ISWA), GermanySUMMARY: In order to quantify and compare the environmental impacts caused by severalmodern household waste management strategies in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg,Germany, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) cradle-to-grave analysis, which accounts for thematerial and energy flows during the life cycle of a product or service, has been applied. In thecase of household wastes, the environmental impacts through out the waste management chaincorrespond to the sum of the impacts that arise during the end-of-life operations of each productthat leaves households as waste. The LCA carried out included the evaluation of the directimpacts arising from household waste management strategies, as well as the benefits obtainedthrough the substitution of raw material and primary energy sources. The operations evaluatedinclude the collection and transportation of wastes, material and energetic recovery, anaerobicdigestion, residual waste treatment and final disposal. For the treatment of residual waste, incineration, mechanical-biological treatment, and mechanical biological stabilization weremodeled, since they represent the state of the art in the Federal Republic of Germany in terms ofwaste treatment technologies.1. INTRODUCTIONAs one of the cornerstones of sustainable materials management, integrated solid wastemanagement strives towards the harmonization of economic, environmental and social benefitsby appropriately steering post-consumer material flows. The adequate management of wastestreams from society requires the integration of different technologies into a system, whichminimizes the hazards on human health and the environment and maximizes the resourcerecovery, while being economically and socially sustainable.Today, the complexity of the waste management sector requires a holistic approach, in whichwaste management systems as a whole are assessed. Based on the analysis of material, substance and energy flows, and the associated cost, the most sustainable waste managementsystem can be identified. This integrated assessment has to be in accordance with the currenttrend of management of material flows as main task of the solid waste management sector. Theconcept of material flow management focuses on steering material, energy and substance flows,Proceedings Sardinia 2007, Eleventh International Waste Management and Landfill SymposiumS. Material Safety Data SheetEye contact: If in eyes wash out immediately with water. In all cases of eye contamination it is a sensibleprecaution to seek medical advice.Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water. If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting. Give a glass of water to drink.Never give anything by the mouth to an unconscious patient. If vomiting occurs give further water. Seekmedical advice.Notes to physician: Treat symptomatically.5. FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURESSpecific hazards: Non-combustible material.Fire fighting further advice: Not combustible, however following evaporation of aqueous componentresidual material can burn if ignited. On burning may emit toxic fumes. Fire fighters to wear self-containedbreathing apparatus and suitable protective clothing if risk of exposure to vapour or products of combustion.Hazchem Code: Not applicable.Suitable extinguishing media: Not combustible, however, if material is involved in a fire use water fog (or ifunavailable fine water spray), foam, dry agent (carbon dioxide, dry chemical powder).6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURESSMALL SPILLSWear protective equipment to prevent skin and eye contamination. Avoid inhalation of vapours. Wipe upwith absorbent (clean rag or paper towels). Collect and seal in properly labelled containers or drums fordisposal.LARGE SPILLSSlippery when spilt. Avoid accidents, clean up immediately. Wear protective equipment to prevent skin andeye contamination and the inhalation of vapours. Work up wind or increase ventilation. Contain - preventrun off into drains and waterways. Use absorbent (soil, sand or other inert material). Collect and seal inproperly labelled containers or drums for disposal. If contamination of sewers or waterways has occurredadvise local emergency services.Dangerous Goods – Initial Emergency Response Guide No: Not applicable.7. HANDLING AND STORAGEHandling: Avoid eye contact and repeated or prolonged skin contact.Storage: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place and out of direct sunlight. Store away from incompatiblematerials described in Section 10. Keep containers closed when not in use - check regularly for leaks.8.
