Program Thursday, May 3 Immel Construction Keynote Address Building Practice Josh Shelton, AIA + Dan Maginn, FAIA el dorado inc 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. Lecture Hall In this featured keynote address, Josh Shelton, AIA, and Dan Maginn, FAIA, principals with the award-winning fi rm el dorado, inc., in Kansas City, will introduce the fi rm and its eclectic design practice that involves working on a wide range of projects. Their presentation will examine diversifi cation of practice and its critical importance during challenging economic conditions. Using examples to illustrate leveraging design as a community-based resource, they will outline how grassroots community involvement can be a viable source of networking and business development. Shelton and Maginn also will explore the roots of el dorado’s fabrication practice and describe the fi rm’s current transition to an architect-led design-build practice. They will demonstrate a direct connection between a “hands-on approach” to architecture and a comprehensive strategy for practicing. The keynote address will include specifi c case studies and project scenarios that illustrate the fi rm’s approach to project delivery and explain the mechanics and benefi ts of an architect-led design-build delivery method. Program Thursday, May 3 Design: Award-Winning Wisconsin Architecture | Panel Discussion Lecture Hall Carrying on the tradition of featuring a seminar presentation by a Wisconsin fi rm, this year’s session will expand on the concept. Architects involved in projects selected to receive 2012 AIA Wisconsin Design Awards have been invited to participate in a panel discussion on excellence in architectural design. With the assistance of Convention committee member, Jon Sandeman, AIA, panel members will have the opportunity to describe key aspects of their award-winning design solutions as well as to explore common threads and different approaches to achieving unique program needs and specifi c project goals. The interactive seminar also will encourage audience participation with an opportunity to ask questions about the projects. In the end, everyone will have a better understanding of the key ingredients and award-winning recipes for successful projects from the perspective of Wisconsin architects working on several different types of projects. AIA Hall of Ideas E & F In her morning seminar, Ava Abramowitz outlined key concepts for managing projects as an assertive practitioner. This seminar session will apply a similar approach and address contracts in terms of architecture and assertive practice. It will be a totally different experience than the law and practice class you took back in architecture school. After briefl y setting the stage by reviewing the “standard of care,” the seminar will focus on the purposes of design and construction contracts and how they can be used to serve you, the owner and the project. Abramowitz will describe four key concepts – exposure, capability, responsibility and power – that architects need to understand to effectively evaluate contracts. If you’re interested in learning more about negotiating as an assertive practitioner – as an architect who believes that you can design your practice as effectively as you can design a building – then this seminar is designed for you. Formerly the deputy general counsel of the AIA and a vice president with Schinnerer, Abramowitz is an attorney, skilled negotiator and the author of “The Architect’s Essentials of Negotiation.” This seminar is sponsored by the Wisconsin Architects Foundation. Sustainability: Forward with the IgCC | Henry Kosarzycki, AIA Hall of Ideas H & I The International Green Construction Code (IgCC) is the comprehensive document positioned to serve as a powerful tool for establishing the minimum performance criteria that will defi ne sustainable buildings. This model overlay code reduces the energy use and carbon footprint of new and existing commercial buildings while minimizing the adverse impact of building construction and operations on the environment. In this seminar, Henry Kosarzycki, 2012 AIA Wisconsin President and a national leader in code development, will outline the scope and intent of the IgCC, how jurisdictions can address local priorities through customization, and how the code will help lead sustainable design. By participating in this session, you will be able to recognize the meaning and intent of sustainable design and construction of buildings, navigate the International Green Construction Code, explain the process of legislative adoption that changes the code document to enforceable administrative rule, and describe the impact that use and operation of a building has on the sustainability model post occupancy.
