The theme for this year’s Convention is FORWARD.
It’s time to advance our profession and fi ne tune the practice of
architecture to move FORWARD and better prepare ourselves for
the future.
Rooted in our collective history of profession and place,
architects look to the future and explore opportunities to shape
it. FORWARD has been the rallying cry in Wisconsin since 1851.
For the Convention, we’ve engaged a brain-trust of national and
local leaders to present innovative developments in technology,
design and sustainability for building places that are both
practical and inspirational.
new economy, we’ve assembled an excellent and useful series of
lectures, seminars and hands-on learning sessions plus a fi vestar
exhibition of cutting-edge products and services for today’s
design and construction industry. You will fi nd a jam-packed
two-day program that takes on current challenges to the practice
of architecture and offers practical solutions through inventive
design, new technology and innovative practice management.
somewhere in between, the 2012 AIA Wisconsin Convention and
Building Products Expo provides many opportunities to advance
your connections and re-fuel your passion for good design. Plus,
initiative to explore the perceptions, beliefs, attitudes, needs and
value of architects. The initiative involves seeking the opinions
of members, clients and others. At the conclusion of this process,
the AIA hopes to embark on a comprehensive plan to advance
the position of architects and bolster the national dialogue about
the central role that architecture plays in our everyday lives. Jane
Kolleeny, who has been retained by the AIA to collect and share
information about the initiative, will be scheduling interviews at
Professional Development Seminars I
9:45 – 11:15 a.m.
Select from four concurrent seminar sessions.
Design: Operating at the Edges | Brad Tomecek, AIA + Christopher Herr, AIA
Lecture Hall
“Operating at the Edges” is a tour of projects that explore the boundaries of tangible architecture led by Brad
Tomecek, AIA, and Christopher Herr, AIA, principals at Studio H:T in Boulder, Colorado. This presentation,
a series of built and unbuilt projects, exposes a trajectory of investigation of unconventional methods of
construction and situationally responsive form-making and space-making, underpinned by an effort to create
responsible buildings. A mix of frustrations and victories lie in the wake of the work. The presentation of
projects provides a basis for commentary on architectural products and practices as well as speculation on what
comes next in the fi eld. During this seminar, Herr and Tomecek will revisit the importance of “re”-search; ask
questions to explore the status quo and expose alternative solutions; give an overview of a series of off-site
manufacturing strategies, including modular, eco-panel, sips and shipping containers and discuss the potential
green benefi ts from these strategies as well as demystify the jurisdictional challenges with prefabricated systems.
(S1A: 1.5 LU/HSW hrs.)
Practice: New Forms of Practice | Thomas Fisher, Assoc. AIA
Hall of Ideas E & F
Service design, experience design, geo-design, public-interest design – these and other forms of practice
have begun to emerge as options for architects and the graduates of architecture programs. These also offer
new types of services architectural fi rms can offer clients and communities. Thomas Fisher, Assoc. AIA,
Dean of the College of Design at the University of Minnesota, will discuss these new forms of practice
and reasons why they have arisen. Those attending this session will be able to describe the new types of
services that have emerged, recognize the key features of these new forms of practice, and the diverse clientneeds
these new forms of practice address, and comprehend the next steps they can take to pursue these
opportunities and the skills needed to do so.
6 FORWARD 2012 AIA Wisconsin Convention & Building Products Expo
Forward: Designs on the Future | David Zach
Hall of Ideas H & I
In a time when too many people are saying everything is changing, are there some things which should never
change? Futurist David Zach will challenge us to not simply think about the future of architecture and design,
but to think back and to think broad. Will competition come not from the usual expected answer of China,
but from citizens of various virtual worlds, where annoying regulations such as “gravity” could be eliminated
from the designs of where more and more people will work and play? Will BIM and the even more looming
Super BIM automate architectural design – or will it automate architects? What is it about architects that can
never, ever be automated? (If you can’t answer that question – are you really an architect?) And, fi nally, as
one seasoned architect told Zach at the 2011 AIA Convention in New Orleans, “Architects are losing their
cool.” So, are they? Are they too much measurement and regulation and not enough artistry and design and
passion? Plan to join the discussion on how we will protect, defend and promote the “coolness” of architecture
in the years to come? (S1C: 1.5 LU hrs.)
Collaboration: Social Media & Your Firm | Brian Lee & Kary Beck
Hall of Ideas G & J
Whether you and your fi rm are fully engaged in social media or are just beginning to dip your toes into the
shallow end, this program will teach you how to swim with the pros. It will begin with a discussion of how
to become current, measure your success and be safe. It will progress through how social media can position
your fi rm for greater project pursuit success while positioning your team as thought leaders in their areas of
expertise. Issues related to client-contracted social media efforts, project-specifi c social media communications,
and controversial public relations efforts that go viral will be covered. Attendees will learn the basics of social
media, how to use it and why use it and be able to incorporate social media into the marketing plans and
communication efforts of companies big and small. Presenters Brian Lee, president of Revelation PR, and
Kary Beck, corporate communications at Mead & Hunt, will discuss how to measure the success of social
media efforts – in particular as they relate to business development, brand positioning, and industry/service
leadership – and to address client and project communication needs related to social media outlets. This seminar
session is sponsored by SMPS - Wisconsin. (S1D: 1.5 LU hrs.)
Awards. This year’s award presentation will be preceded by a special keynote presentation on “The Value
of Design Thinking” by Thomas Fisher, Assoc. AIA, Dean of the College of Design at the University of
Minnesota.
Based on an article published in the Design Observer/Places, Fisher will explain why design thinking has
become one of the most valuable skills architects and designers have to offer and why the design of buildings
will become only one of several outcomes of the work of architects in the future. By participating in
this keynote session, you will be able to explain why architecture and design have begun to parallel the path
that law took in the 20th century and what that means for practice, recognize the historical and conceptual
reasons for the emergence of design thinking as a key value-generating activity in the global economy,
understand why other disciplines have begun to turn to design in order to address the complex problems
they must now deal with, and identify how design thinking can help us address many of the challenges and
paradoxes that we face in creating a better future for ourselves.
Immediately following the keynote address, the Design Awards Committee will present the 2012 AIA
Wisconsin Design Awards to the architects, owners and contractors responsible for the building projects
selected to receive Honor Awards and Merit Awards. Join the celebration of design excellence and enjoy a
special presentation on each award-winning project. (K2A: 1 LU/HSW hr.)
Design: Architecture Opposition/Composition | Anne Fougeron, FAIA
Lecture Hall
Anne Fougeron, FAIA, founder and principal of Fougeron Architecture in San Francisco, is recognized for
her bold modernist designs that span projects with a wide range of scale and budget – from single-family
residences to affordable multifamily housing and from commercial and civic projects to health care facilities.
She works at the intersection of confl icting forces: old and new, public and private, rough and refi ned, and
urban and natural beauty. In this seminar, Fougeron will discuss her fi rm’s latest projects, featured in a recently
published monograph, to demonstrate how architecture can help reconcile the natural and the human-made in
innovative ways. Her presentation will illustrate how simple and cost effective sustainable strategies involving
natural lighting and ventilation can make all buildings better for both the environment and the end user,
architecture and structure can be fully integrated for the design of safe and innovative buildings, and the commitment
to design excellence for all building types can contribute to equitable design for diverse groups and
better architecture for everyone. The seminar will reveal the tension that animates her architecture, inspiring
a humane modernism that investigates cultural oppositions. (S2A: 1.5 LU/HSW hrs.)
Practice: Negotiation Power & Leverage | Ava Abramowitz, Esq., Hon. AIA
Hall of Ideas E & F
If you’re interested in understanding the difference between leverage and power and how you can overcome
the fear of negotiations by utilizing principled or “interest-based” negotiation techniques, then this practice
seminar is for you. In this session you will learn how to develop a Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement
(BATNA) and the three components for building trust with your client. You will also discover the “presteps” to
principled negotiations, the importance of focusing on the interests of the project and the value of developing
options for mutual gain. As Abramowitz explains, “Negotiation at its essence is just another form of creative
design. And, as you’re an architect, it should be your cup of tea.” An attorney and skilled negotiator, Ava
Abramowitz is the author of “The Architect’s Essentials of Negotiation,” a comprehensive guide to negotiation
principles, tools and techniques for architects. She previously served as the deputy general counsel for the AIA
and as the fi rst public member on the Board of Directors of the National Council of Architectural Registration
Boards. This seminar is sponsored by MasterGraphics, Inc. (S2B: 1.5 LU hrs.)
Forward: Presentation Skills – Self Ideas Plans | David Zach
Hall of Ideas H & I
As an architect (or future architect), the ability to speak before an audience is one of the most valuable skills
you can bring to the job. Yet, studies show that more people are more afraid of speaking in public than they
fear death. Futurist David Zach will lead a discussion about Self, Ideas and Plans. From how to shake hands,
how to dress, and what manners and styles will help establish authority and credibility in front of a room.
Discover how to set up a room so the full attention of the audience is on your content and not on, “So why
doesn’t somebody fi x the lights?” Learn what tools you can use to organize and expand your knowledge of
your topic. Slide deck design will be explored, as well as some resources that you can use to develop and
polish your own speaking style. (S2C: 1.5 LU hrs.)
Interior Perspectives: ADA Standards | Arvid Osterberg
Hall of Ideas G & J
Professor Arvid Osterberg will review accessibility and safety issues related to building design, interior design
and site design for residential, publicly-owned and commercial properties. He will provide an overview
of “accessibility” requirements for sites, buildings, exterior spaces and interior spaces. New accessibility
requirements (and modifi ed requirements) in the 2010 Americans with Disability Act Standards for Accessible
Design (ADASAD) will be reviewed. Recommendations that go beyond minimum requirements to greater serve
the needs of all people, regardless of ability level, will also be highlighted. Osterberg is a licensed architect
and professor of architecture at Iowa State University, where he teaches and conducts research in the areas
of safety, accessibility, historic preservation and design. This seminar is sponsored by the IIDA Wisconsin
Design: Award-Winning Wisconsin Architecture | Panel Discussion
Lecture Hall
Carrying on the tradition of featuring a seminar presentation by a Wisconsin fi rm, this year’s session will
expand on the concept. Architects involved in projects selected to receive 2012 AIA Wisconsin Design
Awards have been invited to participate in a panel discussion on excellence in architectural design. With the
assistance of Convention committee member, Jon Sandeman, AIA, panel members will have the opportunity
to describe key aspects of their award-winning design solutions as well as to explore common threads and
different approaches to achieving unique program needs and specifi c project goals. The interactive seminar
also will encourage audience participation with an opportunity to ask questions about the projects. In the end,
everyone will have a better understanding of the key ingredients and award-winning recipes for successful
projects from the perspective of Wisconsin architects working on several different types of projects. This
seminar is sponsored by Ken Saiki Design, Inc. (S3A: 1.5 LU/HSW hrs.)
Practice: Contracts & Assertive Practice | Ava Abramowitz, Esq., Hon. AIA
Hall of Ideas E & F
In her morning seminar, Ava Abramowitz outlined key concepts for managing projects as an assertive
practitioner. This seminar session will apply a similar approach and address contracts in terms of architecture
and assertive practice. It will be a totally different experience than the law and practice class you took back in
architecture school. After briefl y setting the stage by reviewing the “standard of care,” the seminar will focus
on the purposes of design and construction contracts and how they can be used to serve you, the owner and
the project. Abramowitz will describe four key concepts – exposure, capability, responsibility and power –
that architects need to understand to effectively evaluate contracts. If you’re interested in learning more about
negotiating as an assertive practitioner – as an architect who believes that you can design your practice as
effectively as you can design a building – then this seminar is designed for you. Formerly the deputy general
counsel of the AIA and a vice president with Schinnerer, Abramowitz is an attorney, skilled negotiator and the
author of “The Architect’s Essentials of Negotiation.” This seminar is sponsored by the Wisconsin Architects
Foundation. (S3B: 1.5 LU hrs.)
Sustainability: Forward with the IgCC | Henry Kosarzycki, AIA
Hall of Ideas H & I
The International Green Construction Code (IgCC) is the comprehensive document positioned to serve as a
powerful tool for establishing the minimum performance criteria that will defi ne sustainable buildings. This
model overlay code reduces the energy use and carbon footprint of new and existing commercial buildings while
minimizing the adverse impact of building construction and operations on the environment. In this seminar,
Henry Kosarzycki, 2012 AIA Wisconsin President and a national leader in code development, will outline the
scope and intent of the IgCC, how jurisdictions can address local priorities through customization, and how the
code will help lead sustainable design. By participating in this session, you will be able to recognize the meaning
and intent of sustainable design and construction of buildings, navigate the International Green Construction
Code, explain the process of legislative adoption that changes the code document to enforceable administrative
rule, and describe the impact that use and operation of a building has on the sustainability model post occupancy.
David Zach is one of the few professionally trained futurists on this
planet, having earned a master’s degree in Studies of the Future from
the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Dave has worked with over 1400
associations, corporations and colleges offering insights on the personal
and professional impact of strategic trends. He reads a lot – and he
reads a lot more about the past than he does about the future. He knows
that change is vital but it's also overrated and in this time of tumultuous
change, it's far more important that we fi nd the things that don't change
and shouldn't change. Tradition and change are really choices, and
we are only prepared to choose wisely when we look far and wide
for causes, implications and lasting value. Dave has worked with
Northwestern Mutual and Johnson Controls in the roles of environmental
scanning and strategic planning. He taught Future Studies in the School
of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and is on the
Board of Directors of the American Institute of Architects and on the
Board of the American Chesterton Society. Past activities include:
Wisconsin Small Business Development Center Advisory Council,
AIA Wisconsin Board, Future Milwaukee Advisory Board, Community
Advisory Board for NPR station WUWM, board member of eInnovate,
member of the downtown Rotary Club of Milwaukee, and chairman of
the Goals for Greater Milwaukee 2000 Education Committee.
