NUMISMATIC SOCIETY. 37less task to attempt to resume the whole argumentin a fewsentences, but there can be no doubt that the views broughtforward are worthy of the most thoughtful consideration. Itwould, I think, clear the wayfor this consideration if it were atonce recognized that there may have been two Kings of Kent ofthe name of Ecgberht, as there were of the name of Eadberht. The Ecgberht of Kent who signed charters in A.D. 765 canhardly be the same person as the Ecgberht of Wessex who, after an interval of more than seventy years, signscharters inA.D. 888, and whose death isby some authorities placed inA.D. 839.The most extensive and detailed communication that we havereceived for many years on any section of the English series isthat by Mr. W. It would have been a misfortuneif one portion of this valuable monographshould haveappeared in the last volume of one series and the concludingportionin the first volume of another. I shall not at thepresent time attempt to detain you with any analysiscontents.of itsMr. L. A. Lawrence has called our attention to the coinageof Henry IV, of whose groats he has discovered several newtypes. One of the results of his examination of the coins isthat he would transfer some of the coins usually assigned toHenry V from him to his father. He would also place thereduction in the weight of the coinage of Henry IV to an earlier
