Thevenue will now be the clubrooms at BrickerReserve where a Spit Roast will be served. For those umpires who will not be involved infinals, this is a great way to finish up the year, and for those running finals, a last Thursdaywithout the tension of finals appointments. ALLumpires are requested to make every effort toattend. The evening should finish up just after8.30pm.Brad Lowe’s forum last week on the threeumpire system was interrupted on severaloccasions by the pitter patter of little (Lowe)feet. “You’ll need to be quite because Daddy’sspeaking”, whispered Carmel. “He’s my daddy, not yours” was the reply! Carmel was supposedto be at home looking after husband Nigel, whowas recuperating from coronary artery surgery, but instead found herself trying to prevent Nigelfrom running the canteen after training. At leastNigel allowed others to shift the food and drinksupplies back to Bricker after our three weeksat Moorleigh Reserve, after the White Knightthreatened to apply CPR if the exertions provedtoo much for him.History was made at Keysborough last weekwhen the two field umpires’ SFL/ESCFA gamestallies totalled over 1600 games, and theirages averaged almost 70!!!! If their games inother competitions had been included, therewould have been over 2000 games of fieldumpiring experience on the field. This must bea world record!! Interested spectators at thegame include Peter Martin’s alleged love child,Xavier Martin, who told his fellow spectatorsthat Peter was too old to have been his dad! After making history last week, Neville “Nifty”Gardner is not adding to his tally today as heis attending a 50th anniversary reunion for theBox Hill Pioneers’ 1965 premiership team. Whata marvel Neville is, with over fifty years of onfieldinvolvement in open age football!Anthony Steward is back umpiring after ahorrific motor bike accident some weeks agothat left with a very swollen hip. Unfortunately,Stewie’s bike appears to have gone to the greatscrap-yard in the sky!Spectators on occasion have suggestedthat our umpires’ performances can belikened to sewerage (presumably likeningour performances to the positive impact thatfertiliser has on plants). At Highett two weeksago, the senior umpires were forced to detouron their way back to the rooms as the seweragesystem had become overloaded, and the areain front of the rooms resembled the CarrumTreatment Works. Our team very nearly endedup in the s***! The grass should be very greenthere for the rest of the season.Next season, we will not only run as well as ourAFL colleagues but will wear the same greenand grey uniform. To make sure that you haveyour uniform in time for the 2016 season youcan pre-order now by following the links atwww.sflumpires.comThe SFLUA would like to pass on its sincerecondolences to David Mandelbaum and hisfamily on the passing of his father. We will celebrate the Division 3 Grand Finalappointments with a meal after training onThursday September 10. The annual AwardsNight (which includes the Grand Finalappointments) will be held from 7pm onWednesday September 16 at the HuntingdaleGold Club, Windsor Ave, South Oakleigh.
