Thompson tractor • Fall 20072 EarthmovingProfile on Panhandle Grading and Paving Inc.Pensacola, FL. – Panhandle Grading andPaving Inc. has been serving the NorthwestFlorida market for over 25 years, providing thequality work that the Long family continues topride itself in offering.Johnnie Long, President of Panhandle, hasbeen in the business since the 1960’s, gettinghis start with Dixie Grading and Paving. Johnniemade the most out of his time with Dixie learningthe trade. In the early 1970’s, he and his twopartners started their own business, Gulf CoastGrading and Paving. By the late 1970’s, Johnnie’stwo sons, Jerry and Donald, were beginning totake an interest in the business. The decisionwas made to exit Gulf Coast Grading and Pavingto start fresh.Created in 1979, Panhandle had modestbeginnings as most family businesses do.Driveways and small parking lots were wherethe company cut its teeth, but as Jerry andDonald became more involved, the businessbegan to pick up. Donald Long, Vice Presidentof Panhandle and in charge of the Pavingoperations, remembers running his first pavingcrew back in 1984, “I ran that crew for three tofour years, we were a smaller crew and mostlysupported bigger jobs going on around thearea.”Times have changed as Panhandle hasbecome one of the more respected contractorsin northwest Florida. In 2000 and 2006, thePublic Works Association named Panhandletheir “Contractor of the Year” – no small featconsidering the number of contractors in thestate of Florida. Jerry Long serves as the othervice president of Panhandle, and he tends todeal more with the grading division. Betty Longis the secretary/treasurer, but more importantlythe wife/mother and the backbone of the dayto-dayoperations at Panhandle Grading andPaving.Panhandle has grown to approximately 130employees. The paving side of the companyhas roughly 30 employees split between twocrews and two asphalt plants. The two pavingcrews are headed by Superintendent EarnestMillender, who has been with the companyfor over 20 years. Panhandle’s two asphaltplants are located in Milton, FL, and northof Cantonment, FL on Quintette Road. Theplants were a necessity as the size and scopeof Panhandle’s jobs began to increase, “Theasphalt plants were really a natural progression. As the size of our jobs began to grow, it wasthe next logical step for our company,” Donaldsays. Each plant is fed by a Caterpillar ® 962GWheel Loader. The plant on Quintette Road is ina perfect location for Panhandle’s current job, reclaiming and paving nine miles of US Hwy. 29from Cantonment, FL, north to Molino, FL.Panhandle made the move to Caterpillar ®Asphalt Pavers in 2005 when they purchasedan AP-655C for their job repairing State Rd. 399– the beach road stretching from PensacolaBeach, FL, to Navarre, FL. The road was washedaway by Hurricane Ivan in September 2004, andPanhandle was contracted for all the earthwork, site prep and paving. The soft and sandyunderfoot conditions made the job extremelydifficult; the site was so bad, the decision wasmade to feed the paver using articulated trucks(off-highway dump trucks). The AP-655C waschosen for its flotation provided by the MobiltracUndercarriage. The track system wasthe optimal choice for the soft, sandy underfootconditions. After laying 70,000 of the 100,000 tonsthey were contracted for, the job was terminateddue to damage from Hurricane Dennis. After the beach job, Panhandle purchasedan AP-800D in 2006 and another in 2007. InMarch, Panhandle traded in the AP-655C fortheir newest paver, an AP-1055D. The AP-1055Dwas purchased due to the need for a largerhighway class machine that would be heavierand better suited for their Hwy. 29 job. A newCB-634D Compactor, two CB-634C Compactorsand a skidsteer with an asphalt cutter can alsobe found on Panhandle’s paving projects.Other pieces of Caterpillar equipment usedby Panhandle’s Grading division include a D5GLGP, a D6M, two D6N Dozers, a 613 Scraper,a 12G Motor Grader, two D250E’s ArticulatedTrucks, a 416C Backhoe Loader, a Multi-TerrainLoader and a CS-563 Compactor. David Irwin,HE Salesman, Pensacola branch, has beencalling on Panhandle for over 10 years. BrianLaughlin, Thompson Tractor Paving Specialist, has also helped to develop the relationshipbetween Panhandle and Thompson TractorCompany by offering training on initial setup andmaintenance on the Caterpillar Asphalt Pavers.Left to right - Phil Luker, Brian Laughlin, David Irwin, Donald Long, Johnnie Long, Jerry Long“ I haveAccess”Cat® D6KBest in ClassWherever my business takes me, I have Access to …• The excellent service I expect from Thompson Tractor• Knowledgeable staff who understand my needs• One statement for all rental, parts and servicetransactions• My account at Thompson TractorApply today and put the power of the Cat ® AccessAccount SMto work for your business.www.cataccessaccount.comThompson Tractor is showcasing a new tracktypetractor – the D6K. Enviro-Tech is a full-servicelandscape company, providing services fromdesign and installation to maintenance. Thecompany was founded in 1989 by Ken Camp, who left the construction industry to becomea Pelham firefighter and was looking for abusiness opportunity to complement his jobschedule of one day on and two days off.By 1995 the company had grown and founditself adding employees, especially afterlanding a large maintenance contract atCentury Plaza. Enviro-Tech also began biddingsmall landscape installation projects beforemoving up to commercial work. The firstcommercial job it landed was for a new KrispyKreme only two blocks from the Enviro-Techshop. The company’s work at Mt. Laurel andRiverchase Elementary schools also caughtthe notice of other builders.“Those were among the projects that got usmoving in the right direction,” Camps says. “Itgot our name out there among some generalcontractors who used our bids.”Enviro-Tech first utilized compactconstruction equipment in 2000 when D.R.Horton Construction hired the company to dosite cleanup. Enviro-Tech’s relationship withD.R. Horton remains strong, and today averagesabout $20,000 per week in landscaping andflat work throughout the metro-Birminghamarea, Camp says, with work currently at eightresidential developments. In addition to the residential work for Horton,Enviro-Tech is installing the landscaping at thenew Hampton Inn on Alabama Highway 150.Among recent projects was the installationat the new California Pizza Kitchen at theGalleria. One of the most important parts ofthat project was saving a Japanese maplevalued at $30,000 during demolition of theexisting restaurant at the site, keeping the treein good health during six months of storage atthe Enviro-Tech yard and reinstalling afterthe CPK was completed. Other installationprojects include Fultondale ElementarySchool, Lawson State and Jefferson State,as well as sidewalk beautification projectsfor the cities of Birmingham, Leeds, Gadsdenand Fairfield. Important maintenance projectshave been with Barbers Dairy, the YMCA, Wal-Mart, Sam’s and Lowe’s.Helping Enviro-Tech complete theconstruction and installation projects havebeen Caterpillar ® compact constructionequipment and attachments. When Enviro-Tech first purchased CCE machines, it trieda Cat ® 216 Skid Steer. When it became clearthe small skid steer was not large enough forthe tasks at hand, the company moved up toASV tracked skid steers. Dissatisfied withthe ASV machines, the company progressedto Caterpillar Multi-Terrain Loaders, andthe Cat rubber tracked machines have beenworkhorses for Enviro-Tech ever since. First,a pair of 267Bs, and currently, four236Bs. In addition, Enviro-Tech uses304 and 305 mini-excavators.Both the MTLs and Mini Excavatorstake advantage of a broad rangeof work tools, says Dave Clemens,Operations Manager, includingaugers, tillers, rakes, brooms, grapples and brush cutters.“We find ourselves using (the worktools) all the time when the machinescan lessen the time of jobs we usedto do by hand,” Clemens says.Having the right equipment andexperienced employees gives Enviro-Tech a competitive advantage. Thecompany now employs 25 people fulltimeand up to 40 during peak times.Camp credits experienced leadershipin the field, skilled operators and theright equipment with keeping hiscustomers happy and his companyprofitable.“Nowadays with budgets being tight, companies without the right equipment andknow-how wind up cutting corners, and thefinished product is not satisfactory,” Campsays, “Having the right equipment that cansave the labor and save the time enables us todo the job in a way that keeps the contractorshappy and us making money.”Clemens says he’s proud of the employeesbecause in the past 12 months, Enviro-Tech hasnot had a single call back on its installationswhile at the same time the company getsseveral calls a week from builders asking forits help correcting problems from installationsperformed by other companies.Left to right - Chuck Shelton (Cat Rental Store), Ken Camp(Owner), David Clemens (Operations Manager)Helping to keep Enviro-Tech happy with itsCaterpillar equipment has been the staff at theThompson Cat Rental Stores in Birminghamand Shelby County. Camp says Enviro-Techlikely will shift most of its service work to theAlabaster store, which opened in 2006, for theconvenience and since their Thompson SalesRep, Chuck Shelton, now is based there. Campsays the relationship between Enviro-Tech andThompson has mostly been good.“We’ve grown together,” he says. “TheRental Store has grown a lot since we starteddealing with Cat, and we’ve grown. Our needshave changed, and they’re continually evolvingto meet those needs. We’ve always been ableto work out a problem to our satisfaction andtheir satisfaction.”Caterpillar ®and Thompson Tractor Introduce NewC-Series Multi-Terrain and Skid Steer LoadersCaterpillar ® Introduces Three New C-Series Multi-Terrain LoadersFeaturing Enhanced Performance and New Undercarriage DesignCaterpillar ® Introduces Four New C-Series Skid Steer Loaders withBig Machine Performance and Advanced Machine ControlThree new Caterpillar ® C-Series Multi-Terrain Loaders, the 277C, 287C and 297C, deliver industry-leadingperformance and operator comfort in their size classesand feature a new undercarriage designed for maximumdurability, easy maintenance and superior ride. Surrettdescribes it this way, “I think that the biggestproblem an owner has, is dealing with thestress and worry that come with keeping yourequipment maintained and running, so youcan make money with it. And that is wherea Thompson Tractor CSA comes into play.Let Thompson Tractor do the worrying aboutmaintaining your equipment, so you can worryabout the bottom line.”In a recent interview, Surrett explains whatthese agreements provide to customers.Q: Are CSAs available on new equipment only? And are they only for Cat ® machines?A: No, we put them on old or new machinesand they can be purchased for brands otherthan Cat.Q: If I already own a machine, can I still get aCSA?A: Yes, you can.Q: How many different CSA programs do weprovide?A: There are several types, but our two mostpopular are: an M&R (Maintenance & Repair)and PM CSA (Preventive Maintenance CustomerService Agreement). We can customize theseany way we need to and we can do a CSA forany machine model.Q: Are all PM CSAs good for one, two or threeyears?A: Yes and more. The whole purpose is toprovide a service agreement based on customerneed. Thompson Tractor will customize thisagreement to meet a customer’s needs basedon machine usage and ownership period.Q: What services are covered?A: With an M&R, the dealer will take care ofall preventive maintenance services and allrepairs on a given number of hours per thecontract either in shop or via field service withinThompson Tractor’s territory. With a PM CSA,the dealer performs all preventive maintenanceon a customer’s machine on the required PMintervals.Q: How long have these been available tocustomers?A: They have always been available for ourearthmoving machines and we’ve recentlycreated several affordable preventivemaintenance options for skid steer loader andmulti-terrain loader owners. A longer lastingand more reliable machine means potentiallyhigher resale.Q: What benefits are there to purchasing theagreement?A: Businesses can minimize downtimeand avoid lowering profitability by havinga Thompson Tractor technician performpreventive maintenance on a regular basis.Thompson Tractor technicians will also makenote of any potential problems. Schedulingservices at appropriate times and working witha customer’s schedule also helps. A longerlasting and more reliable machine meanspotentially higher resale value down the road. With Thompson Tractor, our customers do notneed to have a maintenance technician on theirpayroll and this also reduces costs.Q: Why should I have a service agreement?A: With a more reliable, well-performingmachine, no need for employing technicians, purchasing and housing tooling, keeping bayspace or a budget for PM service, you willsave money. Even better, you won’t have toworry about the disposal of used oils, filters, absorbent pads, etc. You also won’t have toworry about EPA or OSHA safety requirements.Q: If I want a PM CSA who should I contact?A: For all inquiries, contact a Thompson TractorService Department or you can call your salesrep. or PSSR (Product Support & ServiceRepresentative).Q: How much money can customers save witha CSA?A: It can save thousands of dollars dependingon individual customer needs.Getting The Most From Ground Engaging ToolsBucket teeth, blades and edges make a difference for contractorsGround engaging tools (GET) are the teethand edges that take the brunt of the wear, protecting more expensive machine parts andcomponents like buckets, grader moldboardsand dozer blades. Proper GET management isessential, both to control costs and maximizeperformance. Why GET MattersPoor ground penetration in an applicationmeans the bucket or blade must hit the materialharder, sending shocks back through themachine. Those shocks are transferred intodrivetrain components and hydraulics, furthercontributing to stress and wear.GET affects fuel consumption as well. Poorpenetration means the machine must workharder to dig. The harder a machine has towork, the more excess fuel it burns. The right choice in GET improves bucketfill, cycle times, cutting ability and otherproduction factors, so a machine can movemore material per hour.Choose CarefullyEarthmoving equipment can require differentGET at each new jobsite, depending on theapplication and environment. Equipmentmanufacturers may offer GET systemsdesigned for a particular model of machine ora specific application.Select GET components that last as longas possible in their intended application.Depending on the work environment, thatcould be as long as 1,000 hours, while inmore demanding applications, it could beas few as eight hours. Equipment providerslike Thompson Tractor can help contractorschoose the right GET for the application, basedon penetration ability, impact resistance andabrasion protection requirements.Operator skill can contribute to theperformance and wear life of GET components.Operators should be aware of propertechniques for various types of GET and waysto maximize productivity and GET life.Contact a Thompson Tractor Parts and ServiceSales Representative for more information.PartStoreTMOrder parts online.Anytime.No Cost.
