MESSAGE FROM
THE CHAIRMAN
H
On behalf the Florida Atlantic University Foundation, I would like to thank
all members of the FAU family for their continued support. The philanthropic
spirit of our alumni, friends, corporate and community partners, faculty, staff and
students is helping FAU to excel as a world class academic and research institution.
FAU is growing at a rapid pace. Our supporters, who continue to amaze us
with their generosity, are ensuring that this growth continues. This past year saw
the doors open at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing – a magnificent structure
that is home to an exceptional program in nursing. Only a few months ago,
FAU’s newest college, the Charles E. Schmidt College of Biomedical Science, was
established. Gifts from Cindy and Stuart Markowitz, M.D., Robin and Larry
Nagle, and my wife June and myself will help this college as it provides outstanding
opportunities for a new generation of doctors and researchers. The
University Club of the FAU Foundation, through its outstanding series of
events, raised funds to support FAU Libraries and provide scholarships to deserving
students.
This annual report reminds us, once again, of how fortunate we are to have
such generous and caring supporters. With you, and your investment in the future
of Florida Atlantic University, we will continue to soar to new levels of greatness.
INVESTING IN FAU’S FUTURE
This annual report tells the story of six major gifts, and more importantly,
the stories of the people who stand behind these gifts.Generous and insightful,
these donors are imagining and investing in the great future that lies ahead
for FAU, and are turning their dreams for higher education into reality.
“ Michael and I hope that this
collection will benefit both
students and faculty and inspire
a new generation of artists who
are dedicated to creative nonconformity
and self-expression.”
ARANDA
20th Century Russian Art Collection
Residential property developers Michael Michael and Tonya
Aranda knew that FAU would make the perfect home
for their extraordinary and rare collection of 20th
century Russian and Ukrainian fine art. With its strong
visual arts program, the Dorothy F. Schmidt Schmidt College
of Arts and Letters’ School of the Arts is well suited
to be the repository for the collection. The Arandas,
who live in Jupiter, Florida, and own EH Building
Group of North Palm Beach, spent three years acquiring
the more more than $2 million million collection of almost
a thousand lithographs and serigraphs.
Abstract geometric works in the collection collection by suprematism
art movement founder Kasimir Malevich
had great impact on the art world of the early 20th
century. Other well known artists in the collection
include Mikhail Chemiakin, Moisey Kogan, Kogan, Alexandre
Zlotnik, Michail Aleksandrov and and Marc Chagall.
These pioneers are part part of permanent exhibits at The
Museum of Modern Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of
American Art, both in New York, and the Musée
National d’Art Moderne in Paris.
With their gift, the largest single donation of art to
the College, the Arandas are enhancing visual arts and
art history programs at FAU and in the community.

MARLEEN & HAROLD FORKAS
Marleen & Harold Forkas Alumni Center
Marleen and Harold Forkas have a talent for turning dreams into reality. As the first woman to graduate from the
Fashion Institute of Technology’s Management Engineering Division, Marleen used her creativity, drive and innovative
ideas to single-handedly launch and grow what would become a successful 40-year career in the fashion industry.
Harold’s story is equally compelling. Sound business sense, boundless energy and a winning personality helped him
ascend in the sales department of Coca-Cola. Eager for a new challenge, Harold became a Midas Muffler franchise
owner. By the time he retired in 1988, he owned eight very profitable Midas Muffler dealerships.
Once again, Marleen and Harold are making a dream come true. By naming FAU’s first-ever alumni center, they are
providing the Boca Raton campus with a long-needed permanent home for alumni. Their gift of $1 million, which will
double thanks to the state of Florida’s matching gift program, will help build the two-floor, 13,000-square-foot tropical
style structure. Spacious, with a two-story atrium, the alumni center will house a library, great hall, office space, seminar
rooms, classrooms and a catering kitchen. A lighthouse tower will be an important part of the building’s design and a
symbol of the FAU National Alumni Association’s mission to guide alumni “home.”
“Harold and I sincerely hope that in naming FAU’s alumni
center, we will instill a feeling of E.S.P. – Enthusiasm, Sincerity
and Pride, in all past, present and future graduates of FAU.”
After a lifetime of revolutionizing the insurance industry, especially in the area of estate planning, Barry Kaye still
commands the public’s attention through his writings, television and radio appearances and a line of audio-visual
materials. He is equally busy as a philanthropist and in typical Barry Kaye fashion has given new meaning to the word
generosity. Together with his wife of 45 years, Carole Kaye, an art connoisseur and collector, Barry is committed to
bettering the community wherever he lives, especially in the areas of the arts, higher education and medical research.
The Kayes’ pledge to FAU’s College of Business, which totals $5 million and is eligible for a state match, has created
the Barry Kaye Endowed Fund and established the Barry Kaye School of Finance, Insurance and Economics. The Kaye
School will train future leaders of the global financial management industry. The Barry Kaye Institute of Insurance in
Philanthropy will be located in this school. The gift will also fund a senior faculty position and annual lecture series.
Carole and Barry Kaye also made a gift of $500,000 to the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters’ School of
the Arts to establish the Carole and Barry Kaye Endowed Fund in Integrative Arts Education and Outreach. An additional
gift of $85,000 from the Kayes has been used to renovate the FAU Performing Arts Auditorium lobby which now
bears their name.
“I believe that FAU
is one of the most
visionary of
universities and it
is my privilege to
work with its
dedicated staff.”
PETER & SUSAN STEIN
The Sean Stein Scholarship and Pavilion
Sean Stein dreamed of making a difference in the world. A dean’s list student in FAU’s College of Business, talented
athlete, fraternity brother and leader in student government, Sean possessed a charismatic personality and warmth
that would have no doubt served him well in whatever he chose to do. In a paper completed for an FAU philosophy
class Sean wrote, “One goal that gives my life meaning is my hunger to leave my mark on this world. Almost everyone
would like to be remembered but I am positive I am going to do something that ensures I have a place in history.”
Sadly Sean’s aspirations were never fulfilled. His
death in 1999, at the age of 20, tragically ended a
life that had barely begun. Honoring Sean’s memory
and ensuring that his dream of making a difference
will be realized, Sean’s parents, Peter and Susan Stein,
made a gift commitment in excess of $1 million to
FAU to create The Sean Stein Scholarship and Pavilion
Fund. This endowment will benefit highly qualified
students in the College of Business and name
the center structure of the newly opened College of
Business complex on the Boca Raton campus the
“SEAN STEIN PAVILION.” The gift will also provide
the University with a park at the south entrance to
the College of Business.
INVESTING IN
FAU’S FUTURE
“ We want to create a continuum
of giving. We are helping new and
promising students and hope that
those who will benefit from The
Sean Stein Scholarship Fund will
reach out to future generations
with generosity and support.”
MARVIN & SYBIL WEINER
Marvin and Sybil Weiner Spirit of America Collection of Colonial Imprints
Inspired by the American patriots and their quest for liberty and self-determination, Marvin Weiner, a University of
Pennsylvania Wharton School alumnus and successful entrepreneur, began collecting primary historical sources more than
65 years ago. His extraordinary collection of books, original documents, manuscripts, pamphlets and papers, valued at
an estimated $3.8 million today, has now found a permanent home at the FAU Libraries, thanks to the generosity of the
Weiner family. The “Marvin and Sybil Weiner Spirit of America Collection of Colonial Imprints” has an inventory of more
than 13,000 printed items, many of them from the American Colonial era. It has been ranked as one of the top 10
such collections in the United States.
The Weiner Collection will be housed in the S.E. Wimberly Library on FAU’s Boca Raton campus. A special suite will
be constructed to provide secure space for the collection and will include exhibition, work and research areas. A staff of
rare book and restoration professionals will tend to the collection and maintain proper environmental and archival conditions.
Events, exhibits and publications will serve as a means of promoting the collection’s historical and scholarly value.
With the arrival of the Weiner collection and its related academic programs, FAU is on its way to becoming a major
center in the Southeastern United States for the study of American Colonial history, human rights and self-rule.
“I am so pleased that this collection will touch the lives of
many and am eager to entrust Florida Atlantic University with
the social responsibility that comes with this gift. I think
Benjamin Franklin, who is so well represented in this collection,
would have admired FAU for its forward-thinking faculty
and confluence of students and lifelong learners.”
OFFICE DEPOT
Office Depot Center for Executive Development
In an effort to meet the educational needs of the business community in South Florida and across the nation, Office
Depot made a gift of $2 million to FAU’s executive education program in the College of Business. The gift, which will
double in value when matched by the state, will be used to construct the Office Depot Center for Executive Development,
a 13,000-square-foot, two-story building that will be sited adjacent to the College of Business on FAU’s Boca
Raton campus.
The Office Depot Center will become a focal point for the University’s broad spectrum of programs for the business
community, including executive graduate programs, executive continuing education, extension programs and corporate
training programs. The gift is the result of an Office Depot initiative called the Education and Diversity Partnership
Program. The program is a joint venture between Office Depot, FAU and Florida International University, the
University of Miami, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities and the United Negro College Fund.
Throughout Office Depot’s 20-year history, FAU has been an academic partner in a number of projects. In
2002, the company established the Office Depot Eminent Scholar Chair in Small Business Research at FAU. Last
year, the University joined with the Journal of Small Business Management to present the inaugural Office Depot
Small Business Research Forum.
“We are very pleased to be able to enhance our existing
relationship with FAU, which we considered for many years
to be our partner and neighborhood university.”
