Names, addresses and telephone numbers mustbe included. Unsigned letters or those with pen names will not be published. Letters may sent to the Editor at www.northeasternadvertiser.comSir,It was claimed last weekin the North-EasternAdvertiser, that theScottsdale HospitalAuxiliary has been toldabout the development, notconsulted,In fact, there werecomprehensiveconsultations and siteinspections, whichresulted in membersvoting in favour of theproposed medical carefacility.Heather Ranson(Secretary) and NormaPetterwood (Treasurer),NESM HospitalAuxiliary.Sir,I cannot understand theattitude of some residentsof Dorset where they havebeen offered a state of theart medical care facility inour community, yet arewilling to put it on the linebecause of their inabilityto see the advantages of allwhich goes with this. The premises willprovide facilities forexisting and new visitinghealth services, specialistvisiting facilities, alliedhealth (e.g: podiatry, dental, physiotherapy etc) andgeneral practice suites. This may well ensure theviability of the NESMHospital into the future. The hospital groundsare not a dedicated area. When the hospital wasbuilt, the grounds were laidout as a landscaped areaonly. Are people aware that theHeritage Pines, thesculpture, the WollemiPine, all garden beds andpaths will remain as theyare? This amountsto $500,000 plus provision ofthe land.We would be foolish toignore this offer.I urge everyone to thinkclearly about this proposal. If we miss out, it’s not onlyus, it’s the futuregenerations who will bedisadvantaged.Brian Ranson,Scottsdale.(Formerly assistantmanager NESM Hospitalfor 34 years).Sir,I am concerned aboutthe misunderstandingcontained in lettersexpressing opposition tothe new Medical Centre. Ido not dismiss lightly suchheartfelt feeling but ask thecommunity to take abroader view.It is crucial to the futureviability of the hospitalthat GP and allied medicalservices are integrated onthe same site. This is notbullying tactics but the wayrural medical services arebeing approached aroundAustralia. In another era it wouldbe built by government aspart of the hospital but inthese times of scarcemedical dollars and anideology of private/publicfunding, this is the serviceBranxholm school to representTasmania in CanberraTHERE is great excitement at the BranxholmPrimary School as Grade 5 and 6 students, accompanied by Principal Chris Crawford, will beheading to Canberra on May 3rd to representTasmanian schools at the first national Tidy Townsawards.Branxholm Primary School has won thecommunity action category of the Tasmanian awardsfor the past two years.model emerging and notone particular toScottsdale.Of course it is notperfect but without it thehospital will wither furtherinto a geriatric facilitywith medical servicesincreasingly centred inLaunceston to the costconvenience ofbureaucrats and theinconvenience of thiscommunity. With the Centre, medical experts like heartspecialists as well as alliedmedical services likepodiatry and dentistry willbe able to attendperiodically. As anextension of thesespecialist services minorsurgery within the hospitalmay also become moreviable.Simply put, the Centrewill enhance andcomplement the hospitaland ensure its futureviability. What is even more vitalis the fact that it will helpattract medicalpractitioners. Make nomistake about it, ruralareas, like Scottsdale, haveextreme difficulty inattracting GPs. Today GPsare more mobile and seekvariety and change. Theyrarely remain. Coreinfrastructure like aMedical Centre is vital toattract them to a regionalsetting because they caneasily move in or opt out ofthe practice. They are notinvolved in the capitalcommitment of setting upa surgery and yet thecommunity is able to havecontinuity of service. Some see the Centre asa desecration of amemorial site and thesentiment isunderstandable. Thefootprint of the centrehowever is relatively smalland involves the removal ofonly one tree, though onewith considerableemotional connection. The site and thehospital memorialises thefallen from the First Warand is a triumphaldeclaration of future hope- a hospital for the livingnot a cemetery for thedead. And the Centrecontinues that hope thattheir sacrifice mayenhance our health andliving. It would be just andin keeping with that spiritif the centre wereappropriately named toreflect those sentiments, with thoughts andsuggestions coming fromthe public.Dr Michael Powell,Springfield.Sir,I am deeply concernedto realise that a largebuilding has been passedby the Dorset Council to beerected in the beautifulpark like grounds of theScottsdale Hospital. This area wasdesignated to the residentsof the North-East in thememory of our soldierswho fought for us. Hencewe do not want it overriddenwith any building.Buildings can neverreplace trees! One only has to viewthe huge area of children'splayground that has beenlost to a large building inthe grounds of theBridport school to realisethat buildings do notreplace recreational areasin any way. Many is the time whenI have been ill, and apatient in the ScottsdaleHospital that I havestrolled through thetranquil grounds, as partof my recovery, and foundgreat contentment andpeace within this area. Nodoubt many patients havealso found the same.I am in no way againsta clinic within theScottsdale area. Quite theopposite providing it is agovernment institute andnot a private commercialpractice! But definitely notin the hospital grounds. The elderly residentswithin that area wouldmost definitely be subjectto noise - trucks, cars bothduring construction andafter being accommodatedby the applicants. All this unwarrantedactivity will, without adoubt, cause greatconcern, and upheaval tothe elderly residents'peaceful lifestyle.Sheila Lovegrove,Bridport.REQUEST FORINFORMATIONSir,Some years ago whilefinalising the estate of myfather, Dudley Winter, anEvangelists PortableOrgan (not in goodcondition) came into mypossesion.I believe it was used bytravelling ministers ofreligion to support thesinging while conductingservices. Theories ofthe day attributed thedisease to contaminatedwater, air and soil or to“social causes” andimmoral practices. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 30, 2011 THE NORTH EASTERN ADVERTISER - 7North Eastern Football Union2011 Preview Challenging year for NEFUIN 2011, the NEFU takes on a new look. Lilydale, one of the traditionallystrong teams in the union for many years, has moved to the NTFA Div2 competition, reducing the local structure to six teams. Of those sixclubs, five have appointed new coaches.Former Scottsdale coach Troy Milne has returned to Bridport, hisoriginal club, after a glittering career with the Magpies. Stephen Barronhas come back to Winnaleah where he played in a couple of premierships.Daniel Kernan who has played at Ringarooma for a couple ofyears will take on the coaching role, Troy Powe who coached Evandalelast year will lead the Crows, while Andrew Offer has been appointedcoach of St Helens.Branxholm’s Neil Oliver is the only coach to survive last year’s purge, and he has been able to retain most of his 2010 team. In DanielRoozendaal and Nick Sutton, the Wanderers have two of the best playersin the competition, and the return of Darius Sutton is good news forthe club.Branxholm played finals last year and will expect to be in contentionagain this season.Ringarooma and Winnaleah are the two clubs who have been themost effective in recruiting new players.Former Robins coach Mick Routledge has gone to Evandale with 10of last year’s team which finished runners-up, but new coach DanielKernan has ensured the traffic has gone both ways. Reinmuth, Doltingand Chapman from South Launceston will bolster the Robins’ ranks, andthey will be finalists again..Stephen Barron regularly booted 100 goals every season when heplayed with Winnaleah three years ago, and the Magpie supporters willbe hoping for a repeat of that form. He has brought a host of formerGeorge Town players with him and both Scott and Jamie Fenton will bewelcomed back. The Magpies look stronger than last year, and coachBarron expects them to figure in the finals.Bridport has lost a number of its promising young players toScottsdale, but the inclusion of former Lilydale premiership players DrewBardenhagen and Kade Dwyer will boost their forward line and Milne willget plenty of possessions. However the Port is still struggling for numbersand may take some time to make an impact. The Crows failed to win a match last season but new coach TroyPowe has brought a few NTFA players with him, and the cellar dwellersof the past two years will be looking to avoid another wooden spoon.Brett Spicer and Damian Cooper are notable recruits and the veteranEddie Miller should still be capable of booting goals. The Crows will wingames but a spot in the finals may be a bridge too far.St Helens were finalists last season, but the bulk of their best playershave returned to Fingal. The club has secured some recruits and Santifrom Glenorchy and Stonjiek (ex Huonville) should be assets. But newcoach Anthony Offer will be concentrating on the many young players hehas at his disposal, and it may take them some time to find their feet. For all yourNetball andFootball NeedsSuppliers of all major brandfootwear and playing apparel.Store in St Helens as wellKING STREET, SCOTTSDALE - PHONE 6352 2357PREMIERS 2010 - LILYDALEWINNALEAHFRIENDLY GROCERRod and Josie Nicholswish the Winnaleahfootball team every successfor the 2011 seasonPh: 6354 2170BRANXHOLMSAWMILLS(TAS) PTY.
