VOL. 103 NO. 12 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 30, 2011 PRICE: $1.30 INCLUDES GSTScottsdale sawmillback in family hands“ ... announcement breathes life back into the North-East ”WHEN Auspine purchased the Frenchpine Scottsdale sawmill in 2005,it ended the family ownership of an enterprise that originally operatedin the main street of Scottsdale, and was the forerunner of the demiseof an industry that employed more than 400 people.But today, Stronach Timber Industries, another local family ownedcompany, has revealed it is negotiating the lease of the Gunns ownedmill, and the announcement breathes life back into the North-East andan industry that has sustained the region for more than 50 years.Michael and Jillene Brill established Stronach Timber Industries in1998 which processes pickets, palings, fence rails and sleepers.Michael Brill said he hopes to sign a contract tomorrow."We've been talking with Gunns since they decided to close the LingSiding mill down, and I'm confident we will fire up the mill again onMonday," he said."We have worked closely in the past with Frenchpine, Auspine, andmore recently Gunns, and it's a relationship we want to continue."Stronach Timber Industries will continue to function at its current sitewith 26 employees, and Mr Brill said an additional 30 positions will berequired at the Ling Siding mill."We will be taking over the kiln, dry mill, treatment plant and ultimatelythe retail component," Mr Brill said.Under the leasehold agreement, which has a three month establishmentphase, Stronach Timber Industries will process valueadded products for Gunns including lining, decking and otherdressed products."But we are reserving the right to source our own resourceand markets, and growing our business," Mr Brill said."However we are obviously very reliant on Gunns to kick offthis operation, and it will enable us to retain our current workforceand ensure a stronger future for Stronach Timber Industries."We are taking advantage of the existing infrastructure in placeat Ling Siding, and the skilled human resource that is currently there."Certainly we are taking a financial risk, but this was the lastchance to keep the Ling Siding mill operational. A quantity of cannabis wasseized and the resident was dealt with in relation to drug possession offences.Other arrests include a 56 year old Scottsdale man charged with commonassault and a number arrest warrants were also executed for outstanding matters.If a charged person does not appear in court having been bailed by policeor the court, a warrant for their arrest in the first instance may be issued.Arrest warrants require the arrested person to be taken directly to the court orat least remanded until the next sitting of the court. If the offender is arrestedon a Friday afternoon, this could mean the weekend in remand at Launceston.However, it is possible for the arrested person to be admitted to further bail.There are a number of factors that determine whether another bail date isgiven and they can include, but are not limited to, the history the offender hasfor breaching court orders, how readily contactable they are, employment andwhether or not there is a genuine effort on behalf of the person to have thematters dealt with.Anyone who may have outstanding matters, is advised to contact a localpolice station and make arrangements to deal with them.This week a number of searches have been conducted in the area in relationto stolen property. Lilydale, one of the traditionallystrong teams in the union for many years, has moved to the NTFA Div2 competition, reducing the local structure to six teams. Of those sixclubs, five have appointed new coaches.Former Scottsdale coach Troy Milne has returned to Bridport, hisoriginal club, after a glittering career with the Magpies. Stephen Barronhas come back to Winnaleah where he played in a couple of premierships.Daniel Kernan who has played at Ringarooma for a couple ofyears will take on the coaching role, Troy Powe who coached Evandalelast year will lead the Crows, while Andrew Offer has been appointedcoach of St Helens.Branxholm’s Neil Oliver is the only coach to survive last year’s purge,and he has been able to retain most of his 2010 team. In DanielRoozendaal and Nick Sutton, the Wanderers have two of the best playersin the competition, and the return of Darius Sutton is good news forthe club.Branxholm played finals last year and will expect to be in contentionagain this season.Ringarooma and Winnaleah are the two clubs who have been themost effective in recruiting new players.Former Robins coach Mick Routledge has gone to Evandale with 10of last year’s team which finished runners-up, but new coach DanielKernan has ensured the traffic has gone both ways. Reinmuth, Doltingand Chapman from South Launceston will bolster the Robins’ ranks, andthey will be finalists again..Stephen Barron regularly booted 100 goals every season when heplayed with Winnaleah three years ago, and the Magpie supporters willbe hoping for a repeat of that form. He has brought a host of formerGeorge Town players with him and both Scott and Jamie Fenton will bewelcomed back. The Magpies look stronger than last year, and coachBarron expects them to figure in the finals.Bridport has lost a number of its promising young players toScottsdale, but the inclusion of former Lilydale premiership players DrewBardenhagen and Kade Dwyer will boost their forward line and Milne willget plenty of possessions. However the Port is still struggling for numbersand may take some time to make an impact.The Crows failed to win a match last season but new coach TroyPowe has brought a few NTFA players with him, and the cellar dwellersof the past two years will be looking to avoid another wooden spoon.Brett Spicer and Damian Cooper are notable recruits and the veteranEddie Miller should still be capable of booting goals. The Crows will wingames but a spot in the finals may be a bridge too far.St Helens were finalists last season, but the bulk of their best playershave returned to Fingal. The club has secured some recruits and Santifrom Glenorchy and Stonjiek (ex Huonville) should be assets. Theywill play Trevallyn in thefirst semi final at KingsMeadows on Saturday.Final scores: Bridport 76 dLongford 59. Div 4finished top of the ladderbut had to be content witha practice match asLilydale failed to show up.They will play on Sundayat Invermay.
