2 - THE NORTH EASTERN ADVERTISER WEDNESDAY, MAY 25, 2011LETTERS TO THE EDITOR• Letters must be short and may be edited for reasonsof space or clarity. Names, addresses and telephonenumbers must be included. Unsigned lettersor those with pen names will not be published.THANK YOU BRIDPORTSir,We are writing to express to the community ofBridport our heartfelt thanks to the people andemergency services who assisted our Dad, SimonBourke who was tragically killed in an ultra lightaccident at Bridport on April 24th.Special thanks to Constable Gavin Storay, RogerMcLennan, Gandy, Brian Collinghan and MichealGraccogna for their assistance during and after theaccident. We appreciate all the assistance we have been givenand applaud the community spirit of Bridport.Thank you all.Jordan, Maddie and family,Quioba.Bruce receives OAM at Government HouseBRUCE Scott of West Scottsdale wasawarded the Order of Australia Medal(OAM) in January this year, and last weekwith his family he was presented with theaward by the Governor of Tasmania, theHonourable Peter Underwood.Mr Scott was awarded the honour forservices to veterans and their familiesthrough the Scottsdale Sub-Branch ofthe RSL, and to the community.• Bruce is pictured with his granddaughter Zoe Sutcliffe, wife Deanna, daughters Rachel Scott and JayneSutcliffe and son-in-lawPeter Sutcliffe,at Government House.(Photo - Mayor Barry Jarvis)NEW MEDICAL CENTRESir,I strongly support the location of a comprehensiveoutpatient medical facility close to the hospital.I am a (rertired) doctor, and to me, the value oflocating the visiting doctors' surgeries close to thehospital facilities is obvious. It keeps the doctors closeto their hospital patients, makes it easier for all staff tomove between surgery and wards. Patients will needonly seek one parking place, even if blood tests andXrays are needed.I do hope the new facillity is going be "wired up" sothat Xrays and scans can be submitted online tospecialist Radiologists for interpretation as needed, reducing the need for recall visits to check reports.I had looked for a plan to be published in theAdvertiser, but if there was one, I missed it. So, havingfollowed the correspondence for some weeks, when Icame back to Tasmania, I made a special trip to theDorset Council offices to look at the plans for myself. This was just after Easter.I was disappointed to learn that the plans were now"under wraps" since the appeal period had ended, dueto some statute or regulation. Why ?However a member of staff did sketch out thelocation and inform me that the whole building wouldtake only a fraction of the space in front of thehospital, in a corner with no special garden or otherfeature. So, as far as I can tell, it should be a win-winsituation for all.But can the Advertiser publish the plan with thelocation, species, and approximate age of eachinvolved tree clearly marked. Then there will be lightas well as heat in the debate ...if it is not all settled yet.Mary Schramm,Ringarooma and Fiji.THIS SATURDAYLIVE MUSICTHE PURE BLONDE’SNEW TO THE N.E.QUALITY PRINTERS AND PUBLISHERS SINCE 190924A KING ST., P.O. The subdivisionheadquarters atScottsdale have also seen somechange with a new constablejoining the team and anotherpart time member expected tocommence duty in August. There was also therecommissioning of the cellsto provide custody ofoffenders and the streamliningHikers happy retreading history• Bushwalk guide Sean Blake tells the hiking group about one of only two bridges on the Bridport to Forester tramway at thejunction of Pearly Brook and the Great Forester River.by Tony ScottRetired forest planner SeanBlake informed participantsabout the operation of the PearlyBrook sawmill and the tramwaythat took its product to Bridport. The group included a numberof descendants of early settlersin the Forester area, who becameinvolved in the forest industry, possibly even working at thePearly Brook mill. The day’s outing included aof arrest and custodyprocedures. One of the main points tonote is that I have beensurprised with the strongsense of community withinDorset which is reflected in theoverall community attitude topublic gatherings within the area.In the last year, my team and Ihave had the responsibility tooversee public safety at a numberof significant events - the NorthEast Rivers Festival including theDerby River Derby, ScottsdaleShow, New Years Eve celebrationsat Bridport and Targa being someof the higher profile events, whichtogether have involved tens ofthousands of patrons. There were also localisedevents such as football grandfinals, regattas, racing and pacingmeetings, the Christmas parade atScottsdale, and Anzac Day..discussion at Forester, a walk ona section of the tramway to thejunction of the Great ForesterRiver and Pearly Brook andsome amateur archaeologicalwork at the old sawmill site.“When you look at the site, that was the biggest sawmill inTasmania and quite modern forits day, you appreciate hownature can reclaim the land,” MrBlake said.In every instance, policeplanned and prepared responsesfor any situation that might arise, including violence or antisocialbehaviour. On some occasionsresources from other policecommands were made availableto assist local officers. However, what becameobvious to me was that the Dorsetcommunity, as a whole is notinterested in creating a nuisanceat public events. There were ofcourse small incidents thatrequired targeted and directintervention at the time but byand large, crowd behaviour hasbeen exceptional. As well as public safety, crimewithin the municipality is a corefocus of our policing duties. Theamount and type of crime beingcommitted is closely monitored aswell as the rates we are able tosolve the crimes and apprehend“It only closed a bit over 70years ago, but the big trees andscrub that have re-establishedmake part of the tramway andthe mill itself hard to locatenow.”Although surrounded byproduction forest andextensively cleared during theearly timber getting days, thearea is reserved from forestryoperations.Changes for Scottsdale sub-divisionthe offenders.Criminal activity and publicsafety are closely related and themost basic principles of policing acommunity, to make it safe, is toreduce crime. I am happy toreport that for the last 12 months,in all but one category, there hasbeen a steady decline in criminalactivity. All the police officers in theSub-Division are committed tothe community they serve. Therehas been some involvement in theAdopt A Cop programme whereschools adopt a police officer astheir own, presentations tocommunity and youth groupsand I have had the privilege toaddress a number of localorganisations.I expect that in the next 12months, we will be able to buildon those foundations and engagethe community more directly.

6 - THE NORTH EASTERN ADVERTISER WEDNESDAY, MAY 25, 2011Safe welding prevents serious injuryWHILE The risk of starting afire during welding is high, theCollaborative Partnership forFarming and Fishing Health andSafety warns the risk to yourhealth is just as important if theright precautions are not taken.Welding uses intense heat, electricity and produces ultravioletradiation as well asharmful fumes, which are allpotential sources of seriousaccidents and health risks.Radiation burns from ultravioletlight are the main safetyhazard posed by electrical arcwelding. The intense light and heatgenerated by the welding arc cancause extreme eye damage, or‘arc eye’ and burns. To prevent serious injury thepartnership recommends thefollowing:• Protect eyes and face.• Oxyacetylene goggles. Farmersdo not require a full face shieldwhen using oxyacetylene, butthey do need filtered lenses forprotection of the eyes. Typicaloxyacetylene goggles have tworound, replaceable lenses on ahinge, which can be swung out ofthe way to reveal clear plasticlenses.• Hand protection. Weldinggloves are essential to protecthands and wrists from contactwith hot metal, welding spatterand from radiation burns.• Suitable Clothing. Wearing thecorrect clothing is just asimportant as wearing weldinggloves. Never wear acrylicfabrics as these materials can beflammable and difficult toremove if they catch on fire.• Fumes. The intense heatproduced during welding canvaporise substances creatingfume clouds, which can beinhaled. Some welding fumesare extremely hazardous andpresent serious long-term healthrisks. The best method to ensureprotection from these fumes is touse a fume extraction system, which consists of a pipe of somesort to draw the fumes awayfrom the welder.Active after schoolprogram must continueSENATOR Guy Barnett believes the ActiveAfter School Communities (AASC) programis under threat because the GillardGovernment has failed to commit to the longtermfuture of this highly successfulprogram."Labor has offered only a 1 year extensionto the end of 2012 for the second year in arow," said Senator Barnett said.“This brief extension is welcome, but itdoesn’t go far enough."The Active After School Communitiesprogram operates in 3270 Australian schoolswith more than 192,000 studentsparticipating. The AASC also employs over200 people, all of whom don’t know theirfuture beyond the end of 2012.In Tasmania over 5,000 children annuallyin 90 schools have participated in the manyafter school sport and team playing activitiesthat the program offers. AASC employs 5full-time and 1 part-time staff in Tasmania“Feedback from the community and fromthe Australian Sports Commission isoverwhelmingly positive, so why can’t theGillard Labor Government end the suspenseand commit to the long term future of theAASC program?” said Senator Barnett.Self CareSome not so complementary commentsby John BellTHE term complementarymedicine covers a widerange of products andtherapies.
