D19HOT WATER DYESMost dyes fall into this category, the hot water being necessary to activate thechemical in the dyes. The Acid dyes have been formulated to dye proteinfibres such as silk and wool and the Disperse dyes are for syntheticsFibrecrafts Acid DyesThe dyes do not contain acid, it is the acid in thewhite vinegar which is used to set them, to which thistitle refers. Use to dye silk, wool, fur, feathers, soyabean fibre, angora, cashmere and nylon in a dyebath or to paint with on silk and set with steam. The quantity of dye used depends on the depth ofcolour you require. It is measured in relation to theweight of the material to be dyed. Using the 1%stock solution, a 2:1 ratio (50cc of 1% dye solutionfor 25g fibre) will give an average depth of colour. This is just a starting point to experiment from. Deepcolours will need much more, while you can getlovely pale colours with far less. White (distilled)vinegar is required to make the colours permanentFibrecrafts Discharge Acid DyesThese dyes are readily discharged from fabricallowing for patterning with discharge pastes. Thedyes are washfast and give best colour results onprotein fibres such as wool and silk. The quantity ofdye powder used depends on the depth of colouryou want. It is measured in relation to weight offibre or yarn to be dyed. Using the 1% stock solution,a 2:1 ratio (50cc of 1% dye solution for 25gfibre) will give an average depth of colour. They can also be used to colourplastic buttons and fasteners. Their effect is lesspotent on polyester, due to its molecular structure, allowing only pastel through to medium shades, although their full potential can be achieved whentransfer printing with the dyes. A concentrated stock solutionof dye (made using boiling water and vinegar) iscombined with discharge paste. The paste is thenlaid on the fabric and allowed to dry. It is activatedby pressing the fabric with a hot iron on a steamsetting. The dyes must be steam fixed to make thempermanent.
