Entrance HallAn integral part of Headington Hill Hall is its Entrance Hall. Originally, thespace was dominated by a Victorian stained glass window, depicting Samson atthe gates of Gaza, but during the war it was damaged. Robert Maxwell laterreplaced the damaged window with a distorted version of the original, in whichMaxwell himself took the role of Samson. However the new version carries animportant message; the pendant around Samson’s neck supposedly represents thehead of Penelope, indicating that ‘behind every man there is a strong femalepresence’.The Entrance Hall can be used for a number of different functions includingserving drinks, dancing and photographs; the grand staircase is particularly usefulfor the latter.
