It was a great fellowshipwith 335 Rotarians, 23 rotaractors and 15guests in attendance. The events started withan informal campfire fellowship on Friday14th August at the Rotary House (Yes, Mbararahas a Rotary House) in Kiyanja, KaseseRoad. A FULL YEAR has passed since Africa’s last reported case caused bythe wild poliovirus.Somalia was the last country to identify a new case, which occurred on 11 August 2014. WhileAfrica has achieved an important public health milestone, the job is not yet finished. To end polioforever, all countries – both endemic and non-endemic – must strengthen routine immunization, address gaps in disease surveillance and do more to reach children who are still being missed byvaccinators.Rotary members have played a key role in the eradication effort. They have led the way in raisingfunds, advocating for government support, building awareness, and mobilizing volunteers on theA ground. Page 3Kampala North Newsletter August 17-23, 2015Rotary Aside: A Board Game To Prevent African Women Dying In Childbirthniversity researchers have created a board game designed toU help African midwives prevent women dying in childbirth. The game, called Progression, has been made by the University ofManchester's school of nursing and midwifery. It has been designed to help in the use of a chart which many midwivesfind difficult to complete. The partograph records heart rate, blood pressure and temperatureand is used to detect problems during labour. The game's creators noted that midwives generally struggle to usethe chart as a decision-making aid. This prevents it being used properly to prevent death and illnessduring childbirth - a major problem in developing countries.'Crucial benefit'With this in mind, Progression involves charting a series of findingsfrom a woman in labour. As players move around the board they land on spaces which triggera randomly selected card question, which they have to answerto keep moving.A pilot scheme carried out with 165 midwives in east Africa hasjust concluded and indicated the game was well-received.ight In PhotosProf Dame Tina Lavender, who led the project, said: "The crucialbenefit of using this game is that it allows midwives to make mistakeswithout endangering lives."The game is designed to provide new knowledge, revise whatthey already know and discuss with other players the best ways tosupport women. The feedback from midwives working in thesecountries during the pilot was overwhelmingly positive."[Source: BBC News]President’s message (Continued from page 1)challenges of leading volunteers as opposed to leading employees.Past District Governor Tusu challenged Rotarians and RotaryClubs on their commitment to membership growth through increasingmembership and creation of new Rotary clubs and underscoredthe importance of membership in enabling service to thecommunities.
