www.usag.livorno.army.mil Page 3Do you really understand the nutrition information on food labels?By Maj. Karen FauberDeCA dietitianPick up almost any food in the commissaryand you are likely to see one or more symbols onthe label promoting health benefits related to thefood. Each symbol indicates that the food is ahealthy choice, yet each symbol has different nutrientrequirements. Food manufacturers andhealth organizations have created labels to promoteprevention and disease management toguide shoppers in making choices. When trying tolose weight, lower cholesterol, manage diabetes, manage blood pressure, or just make healthychoices, shopping can be a real challenge. Nutritioninformation overload on food packages canmake it tough for shoppers to decide what to buyand eat, with up to 70 percent of them makingquick choices as they cruise the aisles. To help relieve the confusion, some researchersare calling for a single, FDA-sanctioned certificationprogram. This proposal may include asimple standard, such as red, yellow and greenlights to indicate where a food fits in a healthydiet. Keep an eye out for more information on thisconcept in the future. The following is a simple guide to help takesome of the guesswork out of understanding currentFDA-approved nutrition information:• Free – these foods have no or only a verysmall amount of fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, sugars, and calories.Steve LoweSports SpecialistThe 2007 USAFE Small Unit Softball Championshipswas hosted at Camp Darby Aug. 5-10.Ten USAFE teams, from six countries throughoutEurope, competed to take on the defending champions, the Croughton Cougars. The finals led to Croughton and Sembach battlingit out for seven full innings of play, lastingan hour and forty-five minutes. www.usag.livorno.army.mil Page 7Destinations: hidden treasures under the Tuscan sunStory and Photo bySPC.(P) Nate AkridgeAFN LivornoThe small town of Cortona sitsatop a 1,700 foot hill and offers aspectacular view of both the Tuscanand Umbrian countryside. While itsname might not mean anything toyou immediately, it’s the town madefamous by Frances Mayes’s book“Under the Tuscan Sun” and laterthe movie.Like other tourists, we drove outto Cortona in the hopes of seeingFrances Mayes’s home and maybeher too. While filming an interviewwith a local townsman outside of thegrocery store, he pointed to a womanwho appeared to be in her 60’s asshe exited the store. It was Frances Mayes and shewas both mellow and lively at the same time whenshe agreed to answer some questions about whyshe chose Cortona. She says her reasons were simple.“I love this town of Cortona, it’s an amazingspot on the globe,” said Mayes. “ I had come outhere once before and felt a logical connectiondrawing me back. It’s peaceful, it’s a beautiful spotand it’s such a fascinating town with so much history.”Surrounded by the remnants of a 2,500 yearold walls, the winding road into town makes youfeel like you’ve stepped back in time.Lake Trasimeno, visible from Cortona, lookslike a sapphire glistening under the warm hues ofsun. But in 217 BC, it was quite the opposite. Locallegend says the lake was a crimson, ruby redpool of blood after Hannibal defeated the Romansthere. The original name of the house Frances Mayes buys is Bramisole(yearn for the sun); but in the movie, its chanced to Polonia by thepolish immigrants that helped renovate her homeCortona has more than just history to offer visitors. It’s also host to a study abroad program with the Universityof Georgia. The exchange gives American artstudents a chance to experience Italian culture firsthand.“When the students look out of their rooms on thetop of the mountain overlooking the whole valley, many begin to cry,” said Rick Johnson, director ofUGA studies abroad program. “They are so happy to behere, because Cortona exudes a calmness like no whereelse.”Cortona is truly an excellent place to get away fromthe hustle and bustle of Italy’s larger cities.“I wanted to put Cortonas’ beauty into words,” saidMayes. “I felt a real connection with this place andknew it would be a great place to spend a lifetime.”Although Contona’s beauty has been caught inwords, its up to the visitors to find their own nitch inCortona’s quiet life.Watch the AFN Destinations on TV on channel 14 on the satellite decoderor on the web at www.afneurope.netWake up with SPC Hall weekdays from 6-10 on “The Eagle” 106.0FM.Tune into talk radio on AFN “The Power Net” 107.0 FM”
