Esta asignatura se apruebacon un promedio no menor de 65 para III ciclo y70 para educación diversificada, una vezsumados los porcentajes de las notas de lastareas y los exámenes. 2 tareas (10% cada una): 20%. I examen Ordinario 40%. II examen Ordinario 40%. Total: 100%Las tareas 1 y 2 se encuentran adjuntas alpresente documento.Es responsabilidad de cada estudiante contactaral tutor o la tutora del curso para aclarar dudasen relación con dicho rubro evaluativo.Las tareas las recibirán los profesores de cadamateria en las tutorías respectivas de la semanaestablecida para la entrega de la tarea, en casode ausencia se entregará en la oficina de cadasede de acuerdo con el horario establecido paraese fin.2

-Exámenes de reposición. Si su promedio finales inferior al mínimo exigido para aprobar elcurso, usted debe reponer el examen ordinarioen el que haya obtenido el porcentaje másbajo, la nota que se consignara será laobtenida en la prueba de reposición. Si nopresentó alguno de los exámenes ordinarios,también tiene derecho a realizar una únicaprueba de reposición.-Exámenes por suficiencia. Es una prueba querealiza el o la estudiante para demostrar quedomina la materia del curso. Un requisito parapresentar este tipo de examen es que quien losolicita sea alumno regular, es decir, que hayamatriculado uno o más cursos del programa. Lacalificación que obtenga en esta prueba, serála correspondiente a la nota del curso. Elmáximo de asignaturas para realizar porsuficiencia será de tres. Cabe destacar que loscontenidos correspondientes a todas laspruebas por suficiencia son los mismos queestablece el programa vigente del Ministerio deEducación Pública para el nivel. Panic ensued, and when things stopped moving, manybuildings, roads and bridges were left with cracks and structural damage.Since then, more than 300 kilometers of roads have been repaired, and the government spent nearly₡22 billion ($43 million) to fix damages.But the country’s bridges haven’t fared so well.One bridge that remains damaged from the quake 20 years ago spans the Chirripó River on Route 32to the Caribbean coast, between Siquirres and Limón. If the bridge were to fail, the port city of Limónwould be disconnected from the rest of the country. Supports on the bridge fell out of alignment, itlacks paint, rust is eating away parts of it, and one of the expansion joints is making the pavementcrack on the bridge’s surface.The Chirripó River Bridge is one of many Costa Rican bridges in bad condition. The government stillconsiders it safe, but its structure has so many problems that another strong earthquake couldrender it useless.“Bridges should get inspected every two years, since only those inspections will determine themaintenance work they need,” said Rolando Castillo, an engineer and head of the bridge departmentat the University of Costa Rica’s National Laboratory of Materials and Structural Models (Lanamme).According to Castillo, Costa Rica has very few bridges that have been built to resist the force ofearthquakes. Before 1971, no proper set of standards existed to establish best practices in terms ofbridge construction in seismic zones. It wasn’t until the 1971 San Fernando Earthquake, which led tomajor bridges malfunctions inthe U.S., that engineers started worrying about seismic-resistant bridge construction.Costa Rica’s most infamous bridge, the Virilla River Bridge on the General Cañas Highway, known asthe “Platina” bridge for its shoddy construction, was not seismically designed. It was built to support24-ton trucks, while today’s bridges are designed for 40-ton trucks.6

In 2005, the administration of then-President Abel Pacheco asked the Japanese InternationalCooperation Agency (JICA) to send engineers to study Costa Rican bridges and suggest a bettersystem to deal with structural problems.In 2007, JICA delivered a report on the problems with the national bridge network and suggestions toimprove the National Bridge System, a government agency.JICA engineers studied 29 bridges across the country. With officials from the Ministry of PublicWorks and Transportation (MOPT), they selected the “ten priority bridges to restore after acomprehensive evaluation, according to the degree of damage and functional importance of[bridges’] structural components,” the report said.
