2015 UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE@CANESFOOTBALL1983 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSTHE MIRACLE IN MIAMILess than a decade removed from a period of uncertaintyin which there was open talk of dropping the footballprogram, the University of Miami Hurricanes stunned thecollege football world by defeating the top-ranked NebraskaCornhuskers, 31-30, in the 1984 Orange Bowl Classic onJanuary 1, 1984.The victory was monumental — for UM football and forcollege football in general. Monumental not only becausethe Cornhuskers were widely considered to be among themost powerful teams in college football history, but it alsoheralded the dawn of a new dynasty in the sport from aprogram that had been all but dead just a few short yearsearlier. That victory — combined with losses by secondrankedTexas in the Cotton Bowl and Illinois in the RoseBowl — vaulted the Hurricanes into the top spot in the finalnational rankings. This was the first national title team without a singleplayer making an All-America first team voted by AP, UPI,the Football Writers Association or the College FootballCoaches Association. One of the keys was a melting pot offensive line — aCanadian (center Ian Sinclair), a Cuban-American (guard JuanComendeiro), an African-American (guard Alvin Ward), anItalian-American (tackle Paul Bertucelli) and an Irish-American(tackle Dave Heffernan).1983 STATISTICAL LEADERSRUSHINGATT YARDS AVG TD LPBentley 144 722 5.0 5 60Griffin 101 447 4.4 0 20PASSINGATT COMP PCT YARDS TD INT LPKosar 327 201 61.5 2329 15 13 73RECEIVINGNO YARDS AVG TD LPDennison 54 594 11.0 3 25INTERCEPTIONSNO YARDS AVG TD LPCalhoun 3 92 30.7 1 92PUNTINGNO YARDS AVG I20 LGTuten 50 2008 41.2 14 52PUNT RETURNSNO YARDS AVG TD LPBrown 31 143 4.6 0 26KICKOFF RETURNSNO YARDS AVG TD LPSutton 14 331 23.6 0 40Miami was only the second national title team to gain morepassing yards than rushing yards.“It’s a tribute to a lot of gutty players and a real teameffort,” head coach Howard Schnellenberger said. “We’ve gota lot of overachievers on our team — or else there has been apoor job of selection done by the All-American selectors.”1983 RESULTS 11-1ORANGE BOWL CHAMPIONSDATE UM OPP OPPONENT W/L SCORE ATTSept. 3 — — at Florida L 3-28 73,907Sept. 10 — — at Houston W 29-7 20,000Sept. 17 — — Purdue W 35-0 37,150Sept. 24 — 13 Notre Dame W 20-0 52,480Oct. 1 15 — at Duke W 56-17 28,750Oct. 8 12 — Louisville W 42-14 30,073Oct. 15 10 — at Mississippi State W 31-7 29,456Oct. 22 8 — at Cincinnati W 17-7 14,163Oct. 29 7 12 West Virginia (HC) W 20-3 63,881Nov. 5 5 — East Carolina W 12-7 39,225Nov. 12 6 — at Florida State W 17-16 57,333Orange Bowl (Miami, Fla.)Jan. 1 5 1 Nebraska W 31-30 72,596Total points/Attendance 313-136 519,014STARTING LINEUPOFFENSEWR Eddie BrownOT Paul BertucelliOG Juan ComendeiroC Ian SinclairOG Alvin WardOT Dave HeffernanTE Glenn DennisonQB Bernie KosarFB Albert BentleyHB Keith GriffinWR Stanley ShakespeareDEFENSEDE Danny BrownRT Kevin FaganMG Tony FitzpatrickLT Fred RobinsonDE Julio CortesLB Jay BrophyLB Ken SiskSC Rodney BellingerQC Reggie SuttonR Kenny CalhounFS Eddie WilliamsSPECIALISTSPK Jeff DavisP Rick TutenLS Bruce FlemingH Rick TutenPR Eddie BrownKR Reggie SuttonCOACHING STAFFHEAD COACHHoward SchnellenbergerASSISTANT COACHESHubbard Alexander, tight endsHarold Allen, defensive lineMike Archer, defensive backsJoe Brodsky, running backsTom Olivadotti, defensive coordinator/linebackersMike Rodriguez, offensive lineGary Stevens, offensive coordinator/receiversMarc Trestman, quarterbacksBill Trout, defensive endsChrist Vagotis, offensive lineArt Kehoe, graduate assistantHISTORY PLAYERS & RECORDSFIELD GOALS
