Before eating.PurposeThe opportunities and experiences children have in theearly years play an important role in how they grow anddevelop.Our program offers: Staff that specializes in Early Childhood Education Materials and daily routines that match the age anddevelopment of each child.We strive to provide a stimulating experience whichpromotes each child’s social/emotional, physical andcognitive development.PhilosophyWe use developmentally appropriate practices to provide asafe, supportive and nurturing environment. The programalso supports the relationship between children, theirfamilies and the preschool staff. Learning activities arepresented through “hands-on” play. These activitiesengage the children so they can explore, experiment andimitate to further their thinking and problem solving skill.CurriculumTeachers design an environment and plan a curriculumthat gently guides children from their current level ofdevelopment to the next. The daily schedule reflects abalance of teacher directed and child initiated activities.Our curriculum is thematic play based; with focuses onliteracy, mathematics, science, art, music and movement.Our sequential curriculum is designed to prepare eachchild for academics in kindergarten and elementary school.2. Children will wash hands:a. After toiletingb. Before eating or cooking activities.H. HANDLING BODILY FLUIDS1. Wearing gloves staff will see to the needs of thechild:a. Removing child from others to a private areab. Cleaning up and changing clothes if necessary2. Call office to have custodian come and properlydisinfect area and remove any contaminatedwaste.3. Staff will follow hand washing procedures.I. FOOD SANITATION1. Leftover foods will be covered, dated and stored inthe refrigerator according to health departmentrecommendation.2. Eating and cooking activity surfaces will be cleanedbefore and after each use by either the classroomaide or Ginny Francis.J. NUTRITION1. Snacks are provided on a monthly donation basisby parents. Each container will be labeled withchild’s name and used for shared snacks on thedays that child attends.2. Food allergies or other medical conditions will benoted and parents will be notified accordingly to thekinds of snacks permitted in class.421
number. Medications must have a current date.All non-prescription medications will follow thesame procedures.b. Medication will be stored in a labeled and lockedcontainer.c. Authorization forms will be kept in a file on theshelf above the teacher computer.d. Administration of medication will be done in thepresence of both Ginny Francis and theclassroom aide. Both will initial along the date,time and dose given.e. Unused medications will be returned to the parentafter signing for it. If medication is not picked upby the end of the school year, it will be discardedin the toilet and noted as such.2. Caring for ill children:a. If it is deemed necessary to separate an ill child,s/he will be accompanied to Avalon Office to theclinic, after a parent has been called. The parentwill be notified where to pick up their child. If aparent is unable, an appointed adult may do so,after informing the staff who will be coming.PLEASE NOTE: if the adult is not on theemergency card, we MUST see identificationbefore child is released. All children leaving classearly must be signed out by an adult.b. Illnesses will be recorded in the Macomb CountyHealth Department binder located on the shelfabove the teacher computer.c. Communicable diseases must be reported to thehealth department.G. HAND WASHING1. Staff will wash hands:a. After assisting with child toileting or personaluse.b. After coming in contact with body fluids(stool,urine,drool,mucus,vomit,blood)c. Before snack preparationEnrollmentEnrollment takes place annually in the spring. Districtresidents, with children currently in our programs, enrollfirst. Next, registrations are taken from other districtresidents and later from non-residents. Registration feeis non-refundable.Enrollment is limited and will be filled on a first come, firstserve basis. We maintain a 10 to 1 child/adult ratio.Children must be three years old on or before September1 of the school year in which they are enrolling inpreschool. Children must be completely toilet trained,without diapers or pull-ups.We are unable to hold spaces for children if tuition is notpaid or if they do not attend class. Families must be upto-datewith tuition in order to register for additionalprograms.South Lake Preschool is located at Avalon Elementaryschool. The hours are 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday depending onenrollment.To attend children must have on file:• Complete updated Child Information Card.• Up-to-date record of immunizations and physicalsigned by a physician.• Child’s birth certificate.205
