Discipline PolicyYoung children gradually develop the ability to control theirbehavior. Teachers apply their knowledge of childdevelopment as they guide children in the process. Ourgoal is for children to grow in the ability to verbally statetheir needs, avoid the use of physical force and develop avariety of ways to solve problems. When children behaveinappropriately or use physical force (hitting, kicking, destroying property) teachers will follow the processoutlined below:1. Teachers will verbally summarize the situation: “Youwould like to have a turn playing in the block corner.”2. The teacher and children together will try to solve theproblem: “There are lots of blocks, which ones will youshare with your friends?”3. The teacher will review the situation and stateexpectations: “Next time you would like a turn, askyour friend or your teacher. Kicking the blocks makesyour friends angry.”If a child continues to behave in an inappropriate manner, teachers will follow the process outlined below:1. “Next time you kick the blocks, you will need to leavethe block area. Tomorrow you may try again.”2. “If you forget to tell your friend that you want a turn andyou hit him, you will need to stay near me for awhile orsit quietly.”3. If a child’s behavior presents a risk to others orregularly requires one-to-one supervision, thecoordinator of the program will be contacted. A planwill be developed to monitor the frequency, intensityand risk of the behavior.South Lake PreschoolHealth Care PlanA.
