Overview of the NKF-DOQI Guidelines• In the early 1990s, the National KidneyFoundation recognized significant differences inESRD care across the nation and around theworld. Much of this care was less than optimal.Multi-disciplinary workgroups were selected toreview the literature, build consenses of optimalclinical practice and create guidelines in fourcategories of ESRD:Vascular AccessPeritoneal DialysisAdequacy of Dialysis andAnemiaOverview of the KDOQI Guidelines• The Vascular Access Multi-DisciplinaryWorkgroup started the process in 1995 withthe first publication in 1997 of the DialysisOutcome Quality Initiative Vascular AccessGuidelines• These were first reviewed and revised in 2000and were published in 2001 as the KidneyDisease Outcomes Quality Initiative forVascular Access with substantive changes inthe Monitoring Section only
