LORD ROTHMORE: (TO JO AS YOUNG ALICE) Miss Summers would you mind?<br />
JO AS YOUNG ALICE: Certainly, sir. I’ll call <strong>the</strong>m <strong>at</strong> once. (ASIDE. URGENT<br />
WHISPER TO THOMPSON) You. Up <strong>the</strong> back stairs to <strong>the</strong> roof now. Don’t talk<br />
to anyone. The shame of this’d kill your mum.<br />
THOMPSON: Ladybird, I shall never pull your pigtails again.<br />
THE FLASHBACK FADES AWAY.<br />
OLDER ALICE: So you see. Up here was where it all started.<br />
JO: Didn’t you tell him to sling his hook? He could have lost you your job.<br />
OLDER ALICE: Oh I wanted to but <strong>the</strong> 1930s were exciting times, <strong>the</strong> first<br />
World War seemed a distant nightmare and we were climbing out of a<br />
recession and somehow Thompson had a way of tapping in to all th<strong>at</strong>.<br />
LORD ROTHMORE PREPARES TO ADDRESS THE GUESTS BELOW<br />
TOM ANNOUNCES: Prey silence for Lord Rothmore.<br />
LORD ROTHMORE: Ladies and Gentleman, friends. I’m informed <strong>the</strong> police<br />
will be here very shortly to take st<strong>at</strong>ements and of course I shall make good<br />
any losses you may have incurred <strong>at</strong> my hotel. Twice over. For I want you all<br />
to be happy. Tonight we stand <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> eve of a gre<strong>at</strong> adventure.<br />
(UNDERSCORE BEGINS) Liverpool has been through some terrible times of<br />
l<strong>at</strong>e but I believe we are turning <strong>the</strong> corner. We can not be downtrodden for<br />
long for man is a noble beast th<strong>at</strong> can and will always survive life’s set<br />
backs.<br />
THE SCENE ALTERNATES BEWEEN ROTHMORE IN THE HOTEL RECEPTION<br />
ROOM AND THOMPSON AND ALICE ON THE ROOF.<br />
JO AS YOUNG ALICE: All right, hand it all over.<br />
THOMPSON: Ladybird -<br />
JO AS YOUNG ALICE: Shut it!<br />
SHE HOLDS OUT HER HAND. HE SURRENDERS A WALLET.<br />
JO AS YOUNG ALICE: And <strong>the</strong> rest.<br />
AS LORD ROTHMORE CONTINUES SPEAKING DOWN AT THE RECEPTION, UP ON<br />
THE ROOF THOMPSON DIVESTS HIMSELF OF AN AMAZING AMOUNT OF LOOT<br />
FROM VARIOUS POCKETS.<br />
ALICE PUTS IT ALL IN A BAG.<br />
