7th Annual Conference onCONTAINER INFRASTRUCTUREIN INDIADeveloping Capacity, Improving EfficiencyJuly 29-30, 2013, The Imperial, New Delhi

CONTAINER INFRASTRUCTURE IN INDIAMission• In 2012-13, container traffic at Indian ports grew by less than 1 per cent over the previous year. In fact, major ports witnessed a drop of almost 1 percent in container traffic handled during the year, while non-major ports witnessed a growth of only 6 per cent. This was due to the continuing impact ofthe economic slowdown. The traffic outlook for ports remains somewhat uncertain for 2013-14.• Rail container traffic grew by 6 per cent in 2012-13 over the previous year, similar to the growth witnessed in the last four years. This growth was expectedto be somewhat higher in the current year with the reduction in container haulage charges from April 2013; however, rail container traffic witnessednegative growth.• Though growth has been slow in recent years, it is expected that container volumes will eventually pick up. Even at current growth rates, we do not haveadequate capacity. The high capacity utilisation level of almost 87 per cent at major ports is impacting the efficiency of port operations. Therefore, weneed to increase the container capacity at ports to handle future growth. In addition, port connectivity projects need to be expedited. There is also a needto develop coastal container shipping and inland water transport of containers. There are certain regulatory and policy aspects that need to be reviewedin light of the present container trade scenario.• There is also a need to expand the container infrastructure at CFSs, ICDs, warehouses and logistics parks. Development of these infrastructure facilitiesneeds to be accelerated. Private container train operators need to be encouraged to handle more cargo and develop the required infrastructure. Therailways need to ensure timely development of the DFC. The use of refrigerated containers (or reefers) needs to be promoted.• In addition to capacity expansion, we need to improve efficiency and throughput. To that end, technology can play a major role. Modern equipment likeautomatic stacking cranes offers significant potential. Advanced technologies like GPS and RFID provide greater visibility in container/vehicle trackingand control over terminal operations. Automation in container terminals can also help in improving operational efficiency.• The mission of this conference is to provide an update on container infrastructure development in India, highlight the key trends and developments, identify future opportunities, discuss the new initiatives and projects, and focus on the main issues and challenges. The conference will also showcasethe most promising and relevant technologies, and equipment solutions.Target AudienceThe conference is targeted at officials and managers from:- Rail operators - Port operators - Warehousing companies- Container leasing/handling firms - Service providers - Technology providers- Logistics firms - Freight forwarders - Refrigerated container manufacturers- Equipment providers - Financial institutions and banks - Consultancy organisations- Shipping lines - ICD operators - Etc.- Multimodal operators - Government agenciesOrganisersThe conference is being organised by India Infrastructure Publishing, a company dedicated to providing information on infrastructure sectors throughmagazines, newsletters, reports and conferences.
