Valkenburg Cave Christmas Market Friday, 25 November 2011
Under the Castle of Valkenburg is a maze of passages over
a thousand years old. Once used as an escape route, they
enabled the knights and their warriors to secretly vanish
from the castle, and attack the enemy from behind. During
the German occupation in World War II, the cave served
as a shelter for Jewish people, locals, and American troops.
Now, Christmas transforms this underground world with
twinkling lights, magic illumination and music. You can
shop at stalls with quality Christmas items, and watch
demonstrations of Old Dutch handicrafts. Bring Euros for meals and purchases—and don’t
forget your camera! Passport required plus SOFA card and other border crossing documents,
if applicable.
Join the USO at Wartburg Castle in beautiful Eisenach! We
start our day with a tour of this beautiful, UNESCO Worldheritage
site, famous for its architecture and for being the refuge
of Martin Luther after his excommunication from the Catholic
Church in 1521. It was in this castle where in only 10 months
Martin Luther translated the entire New Testament from Greek
into German. Following the tour we visit the beautiful Medieval Christmas Market, where you
can find hand made items and demonstrations of skills such as glassblowing, stone-cutting, and
candle making. You can also spend some time shopping and exploring in Eisenach. Bring Euros
for meals and purchases—and don’t forget your camera!
