continuing on to Sinaia. Here we will see the fairytale Peles Castle, built by King<br />

Carol I in the 19th century. Continue on to Brasov where we will stay for two<br />

nights at a four star hotel and where we will enjoy dinner tonight.<br />

Day 4 — Brasov. Day at leisure. Relax and enjoy your<br />

time in Brasov. Lunch will be included at the hotel<br />

and dinner this evening will be at a local rest<strong>au</strong>rant in<br />

Poiana, a nearby resort set in a fantastic location in<br />

the Carpathians.<br />

Day 5 — Bran & Cernavoda. Depart Brasov this<br />

morning and drive through the mountain-ringed<br />

landscapes and past some of the area’s historical<br />

monuments. We will stop at Bran to visit the world<br />

famous ‘Dracula’s Castle’, built as a fortress in 1212<br />

by the Knights of the Teutonic Order. Vlad Tepes, better known as Vlad the<br />

Impaler, used the Castle as headquarters for his incursions into Transylvania.<br />

Continue on to Ploiesti for a lunch stop, and finally to Cernavoda where we will<br />

embark the <strong>MS</strong> <strong>Johann</strong> <strong>Str<strong>au</strong>ss</strong>.<br />

Day 6 — Danube Delta. The vast Danube Delta is one of the most important<br />

wetlands left in Europe. From the port of Tulcea, join a boat trip to explore the<br />

delta. Sail in the afternoon.<br />

Day 7 — Bucharest. Arrive this morning in the port of Giurgiu for a drive to<br />

Bucharest. We will explore the oulevards with their decidedly French style and<br />

later tour the excellent Village Museum. Enjoy lunch in a typical Romanian<br />

rest<strong>au</strong>rant. Rejoin the ship in Giurgiu and reposition to Rousse for an overnight<br />

mooring.<br />

Day 8 — Veliko Tarnovo. From the port of Rousse, depart by coach for a<br />

full-day tour to Veliko Tarnovo, the ‘City of the Tsars’. The Yantra River all but<br />

encircles the city, a one time capital, and<br />

the enchanting houses cling to a steep<br />

gorge. The excursion will include lunch in<br />

a local rest<strong>au</strong>rant.<br />

Day 9 — Belogradchik & Vidin. This<br />

morning we will arrive in the Bulgarian<br />

port of Vidin. From here, drive to<br />

Belogradchik which is located close to the<br />

Serbian border. The Belogradchik Rocks<br />

are a famous Bulgarian be<strong>au</strong>ty spot. The<br />

sandstone has been weathered into all<br />

manners of bizarre shapes and housed<br />

amongst the rocks is an Ottoman fort,<br />

built on the remains of a Roman<br />

structure. The excursion will end with a<br />

city tour of Vidin, including the Baba<br />

<strong>Cruising</strong> the Iron Gates Gorge<br />

Vida Fortress.<br />

Day 10 — <strong>Cruising</strong> through the Iron Gates. Today the scenery be<strong>com</strong>es truly<br />

spectacular as you cruise through the Iron Gates, a narrow Danube gorge<br />

between the Carpathian and Balkan Mountains.<br />

Day 11 — Belgrade. Arrive in Belgrade and join a<br />

tour of the city’s main attractions, including<br />

Kalemegdan fortress, Saint Sava Cathedral and<br />

Tito’s Memorial. Sail in the early evening.<br />

Day 12 — Pecs. Arrive in the Hungarian town of<br />

Mohacs an area renowned for its paprika<br />

production. Drive to the university town of Pecs, a<br />

settlement dating back to Roman times. On a<br />

walking tour see some of the be<strong>au</strong>tifully restored<br />

grand buildings, the Romanesque cathedral and the<br />

Mosque which is now a Catholic church.<br />

Day 13 — Budapest. Arrive this morning in the city of Budapest. We have the<br />

day to explore Hungary’s elegant capital. Spend<br />

the morning on an excursion that includes the<br />

old quarter, a visit to the Matthias’ Church and<br />

the Fishermen’s Bastion from where there are<br />

stunning views of the city. After lunch on board<br />

there will be free time in Budapest or the<br />

opportunity to join an optional excursion to<br />

the small Baroque town of Godollo.<br />

Day 14 — Budapest to London. Disembark<br />

after breakfast and return to<br />

London by scheduled flight.<br />
