1.2 Visitor Days
Indonesia, Japan and India — all Asian markets — registered the highest
proportion of visitor days. Visitor days from Indonesia, accounting
for 18.6% of total visitor days, fell by a marginal 0.9%. Although the
arrivals from Indonesia grew (+8.5%), length of stay of visitors from
the market decreased from 3.8 days in 1999 to 3.4 days in 2000. For
Japan, although length of stay of visitors was down by –1.3%, the increase
in arrivals (+8.0%) more than compensated for the decline,
leading to a 6.6% increase in visitor days. India posted a buoyant
growth in visitor days of 21.3%, largely due to the significant increase
in arrivals (+20.1%), while length of stay increased marginally from
5.2 days to 5.3 days. The visitor days from Japan and India constituted
8.8% and 7.5% of total visitor days respectively.
The next major market in terms of visitor days is UK, representing
6.3% of total visitor days. Visitor days from the market were up by
13.4%, contributed by increases in both visitor arrivals (+10.8%) and
length of stay (+2.4%). Australia, however, showed a marginal decline
in length of stay (-0.4%), which dampened the growth in visitor days
Singapore Annual Report on Tourism Statistics 2000
(+9.1%). In the case of USA, visitor days, accounting for 5.6% of total
visitor days, exhibited a good growth of 11.0% due to increases in
of visitor days for Australia and USA was 6.2% and 5.6% respectively.
