2.2 Seasonal Pattern Visitor arrivals to Singapore peaked in July at 707,413 visitors, the highest ever for any month in history and the first time that monthly arrivals crossed the 700,000 mark. Other peak months in terms of visitor traffic were August and December. This corresponded to the peak arrival months of visitors from Asia. The monthly arrival trend of visitors from Europe showed a distinct seasonal pattern. Visitor arrivals from the region peaked in the months of March, August, October and November and dipped in June and September. The last two quarters of the year were popular periods of travel for visitors from Oceania. In particular, July and September were the peak months for travel to Singapore. In the case of the Americas, the first quarter was the most popular period of travel, especially in the month of March. Africa registered higher visitor counts in the months of April, July, August and December. 2.3 Mode of Arrival The majority of visitors, constituting 73.6% of total arrivals, arrived in Singapore via air (+10.0%). The impressive performance of sea arrivals from South Korea (+57.9%), Japan (+40.8%) and India (+40.4%) contributed to the overall increase. Visitors arriving by land, representing 11.4% of arrivals, also posted an increase of 9.9%. 2.4 Purpose of Visit Holiday arrivals, representing 48.1% of total arrivals, increased by 8.5%. Markets that registered significant growth in the holiday segment included South Korea (+54.4%), India (+24.1%), Philippines (+16.9%), UK (+13.6%) and USA (+10.5%). Visitors on business-related 1 purposes made up 21.7% of all visitors. This group of visitors increased by a buoyant 12.5%, fuelled by the strong growth in business-related traffic from China (+25.1%), India (+19.7%), Hong Kong (+19.1%) and South Korea (+15.3%). VFR arrivals posted growth of 5.0%, accounting for 6.4% of total arrivals. Specifically, the VFR segment from the Philippines (+21.7%) and China (+18.5%) showed strong growth. There was nearly as many female holiday visitors as male holiday visitors. However, male visitors on business-related trips (84.9%) to Singapore made up the vast majority of the business-related segment . For the VFR segment, there were slightly more female visitors (50.7%)
than male visitors. Most of the holiday visitors were on their first visit (70.5%) while only 16.8% of visitors on business-related trips were first-time visitors. Holiday visitors stayed for an average of 2.8 days, the lowest for any segment. At the other end of the spectrum, VFR visitors stayed for about 8.1 days. 2.5 Travel Arrangement In terms of travel arrangement, visitors on non-group packages (26.7%) constituted the largest proportion. This group of visitors increased by 5.3%. Group packaged traffic made up 18.9% of visitors and grew by a strong 13.3%. Most of the arrivals on group packaged tours were from Japan, China and South Korea. Visitors on other travel arrangements made up a significant 23.8% of total visitor arrivals and increased by 11.6%. Visitors on non-group packages tend to stay longer than those on group packages. On average, they stayed 1.5 more days than group packaged visitors. 2.6 Accommodation 62.3% of the visitors in 2000 chose to stay in hotels. Those who stayed with friends and relatives accounted for 11.5%. These two groups of visitors registered growth of 9.7% and 8.4% respectively. Singapore Annual Report on Tourism Statistics 2000 Over three-quarters of visitors on holiday (77.6%) and businessrelated (77.4%) trips chose to stay in hotels, while the bulk of VFR visitors (72.3%) stayed with their friends and relatives. 2.7 Length of Stay The average length of stay of visitors to Singapore was 3.16 days, down 0.4%. This marginal decrease was attributable to the significant increase in visitors who stayed for less than one day (+20.3%). However, the overall drop in length of stay was mitigated by the good growth of visitors who stayed for four and five days—up 11.8% and 11.4% respectively. Visitors from Asia stayed an average of 3.16 days. Visitors from the Americas registered the longest average length of stay (3.53 days). Conversely, visitors from Oceania stayed for the shortest length of time (2.92 days). 3. GAZETTED HOTELS There were 104 gazetted hotels in Singapore in 2000, providing a total room supply of 30,469. This was 2.6% more rooms than that in 1999. Six new hotels started operation in 2000. They were: Century Roxy Park, Grandmax Hotel, Hotel Windsor, The Fullerton Singapore, The Gallery Evason and Ubin Lagoon Resort. Hotels that ceased
