Most of the holiday visitors were on their first visit (70.5%) while only<br />

16.8% of visitors on business-related trips were first-time visitors.<br />

Holiday visitors stayed for an average of 2.8 days, the lowest for any<br />

segment. At the other end of the spectrum, VFR visitors stayed for<br />

about 8.1 days.<br />

2.5 Travel Arrangement<br />

In terms of travel arrangement, visitors on non-group packages<br />

(26.7%) constituted the largest proportion. This group of visitors increased<br />

by 5.3%. Group packaged traffic made up 18.9% of visitors<br />

and grew by a strong 13.3%. Most of the arrivals on group packaged<br />

tours were from Japan, China and South Korea.<br />

Visitors on other travel arrangements made up a significant 23.8% of<br />

total visitor arrivals and increased by 11.6%.<br />

Visitors on non-group packages tend to stay longer than those on<br />

group packages. On average, they stayed 1.5 more days than group<br />

packaged visitors.<br />

2.6 Accommodation<br />

62.3% of the visitors in 2000 chose to stay in hotels. Those who<br />

stayed with friends and relatives accounted for 11.5%. These two<br />

groups of visitors registered growth of 9.7% and 8.4% respectively.<br />

Over three-quarters of visitors on holiday (77.6%) and businessrelated<br />

(77.4%) trips chose to stay in hotels, while the bulk of VFR<br />

visitors (72.3%) stayed with their friends and relatives.<br />

2.7 Length of Stay<br />

The average length of stay of visitors to <strong>Singapore</strong> was 3.16 days,<br />

down 0.4%. This marginal decrease was attributable to the significant<br />

increase in visitors who stayed for less than one day (+20.3%). However,<br />

the overall drop in length of stay was mitigated by the good<br />

growth of visitors who stayed for four and five days—up 11.8% and<br />

11.4% respectively.<br />

Visitors from Asia stayed an average of 3.16 days. Visitors from the<br />

Americas registered the longest average length of stay (3.53 days).<br />

Conversely, visitors from Oceania stayed for the shortest length of<br />

time (2.92 days).<br />

3. GAZETTED HOTELS<br />

There were 104 gazetted hotels in <strong>Singapore</strong> in 2000, providing a total<br />

room supply of 30,469. This was 2.6% more rooms than that in<br />

1999.<br />

Six new hotels started operation in 2000. They were: Century Roxy<br />

Park, Grandmax Hotel, Hotel Windsor, The Fullerton <strong>Singapore</strong>,<br />

The Gallery Evason and Ubin Lagoon Resort. Hotels that ceased
