ECONOMICS CHALLENGEGRADUATE CREDIT PROGRAMS3For the second time in five years, a teamof Carmel High School students has won theNational Economics Championship, whichtook place May 19-21 in New York City.Adam Aisen, Joey Buser, Harry Murzyn, andSteven Yee competed in the AdvancedPlacement category, defeating three otherteams that qualified for the finals. CarmelHigh School’s team took part in the nationalevent as a result of winning the Midwestcompetition in Chicago.“The performance of this team wasabsolutely outstanding,” said Michelle Foutz,who teaches economics at the high schooland sponsors the team. “These young menbeat the private school from Hawaii that hadwon the national championship the last twoyears.”Foutz noted that the Carmel team was infourth place in the four-team competitionduring the first round, but rallied to qualifyfor the finals, where it beat Belmont to winthe national title.Foutz said, “Whether these studentschoose to major in economics in college,participation in this program created agreater enthusiasm and appreciation for thestudy of economics, which will remain withthem throughout the rest of their lives.”Winners at each of the three sites were:Mishawaka site:Adam Smith DivisionFirst Place: St. Joseph High School, South BendSecond Place: Penn High School, MishawakaDavid Ricardo DivisionFirst Place: Elkhart Memorial High SchoolSecond Place: The Culver AcademiesIndianapolis site:Adam Smith DivisionFirst Place: Carmel High SchoolSecond Place: Brebeuf Jesuit PreparatorySchoolDavid Ricardo DivisionFirst Place: Carmel High SchoolSecond Place: Burris Laboratory SchoolNew Albany/Sellersburg site:Adam Smith DivisionFirst Place: Madison Consolidated HighSchoolSecond Place: Columbus East High SchoolDavid Ricardo DivisionFirst Place: Madison Consolidated HighSchoolSecond Place: Columbus East High SchoolPRE-SERVICETo ensure that new K-12 teachers enterthe classroom armed with sound economicscontent and best teaching practices, ICEEcontinued initiatives to encourage Schools ofEducation to offer the undergraduate course,Economics for Future Teachers. The Purdue,IUPUI, IU Kokomo, and ISU Centers reached217 education students with this three-creditcourse.Each summer the Indiana Council forEconomic Education (ICEE) sponsorsintensive, graduate-credit workshops for K-12teachers. These workshops cover a variety ofeconomic topics and take place at the ICEE‘sUniversity Centers. Teachers learn economicconcepts and also develop curriculum unitsto use with their students. Thanks to ourmany generous contributors, the ICEE offersfull or partial tuition scholarships to thoseattending the workshops, which over theyears have become the “flagship” program ofthe ICEE.Three hundred and twenty (320) Indianateachers received scholarships to attend oneof 20 intensive graduate-credit programs.Participants learned basic economic, business,and financial concepts and then developedcurriculum units to use with their students.IN-SERVICE PROGRAMSICEE reached 2,311 teachers andeducators via regional in-service programsand intensive summer workshops.
