The following are the most preferred signage and wayfinding best
practice imagery. These images will provide guidance in refining the initial
sign design concepts as the signs progress from preliminary to final draft.
Key Themes of Image Preference Ranking:
• Art and artistic elements made of natural materials
• Preference of symbols over text
• Durable, natural materials (preference for steel rather than wood)
• Cost considerations (both install costs and lifecycle/maintenance
costs)
• Legibility is key, especially for maps, but also for entire trail
signage system (should be easy and intuitive to use - lettering
should be large enough to read while moving)
• Hierarchy of trails (am I on the primary trail?)
• Although not signage, artistic benches and trash were among the
top image choices
• Desire for mile markers with an associated map graphic
• Desire for more information about trails on signage (slope, surface
materials, etc)
• Preferred materials: steel, wood, stone (with pops of color)
• Transparency - Ability to see through and around signs (minimize
visual weight)
