Applied Science <strong>for</strong> ESOL students (level 1)<br />

The course gives a general introduction to the science sector.<br />

You’ll also improve your English language, IT and Maths skills,<br />

which will help you to meet social, academic and vocational<br />

demands more effectively. As well as improving your English,<br />

you can take part in activities such as award ceremonies, trips,<br />

after class clubs, sports activities and homework club.<br />

Entry requirements: Entry level 3 ESOL or GCSEs (grades<br />

F-G). You will also need to attend a College interview.<br />

Possible next steps: BTEC First Science or GCSE Science<br />

courses.<br />

BTEC First Diploma – Science (level 2)<br />

Develop your practical and work-related skills in science. You<br />

will study biology, chemistry, maths and physics in some detail<br />

and aspects of science in the workplace. The assignments<br />

include practical and research work.<br />

Entry requirements: 5 GCSEs at grade D–G plus a<br />

satisfactory College assessment.<br />

Possible next steps: Further study or employment.<br />

BTEC National Diploma – Science (level 3)<br />

The two-year course combines studies in biology, chemistry,<br />

physics, maths and vocational studies and can lead to<br />

biochemistry, medicine, engineering and related degrees.<br />

There are plenty of interesting experiments throughout the<br />

course. There are no exams and you are awarded grades <strong>for</strong><br />

your different modules. The National Diploma is equivalent to<br />

three A Levels.<br />

Entry requirements: 5 GCSEs at grade A–C, including<br />

science and maths.<br />

Possible next steps: Higher Education or employment.<br />
