ICE East of England Merit awards
2013
The ICE Regional Merit Awards are the ‘Oscars’ of the civil engineering
profession. Is there a project that delighted your client and inspires pride
in your organisation? Don’t hide your light under a bushel. You can
enter a project in one or more of four categories; Physical Achievement,
Team Achievement, Technical Excellence and Sustainability.
How to enter
To be eligible, projects must be located in the ICE East of England
Region and completed within the calendar year 2012.

a1260 Pier refurbishment – Merit

The A1260 Bridge Refurbishment scheme involved the use of complex
temporary works, carefully planned traffic management and well considered
construction methods to permit bridge jacking and pier refurbishment of four
bridges on the one of the busiest roads in Peterborough. It caused minimal
disruption and reduced future maintenance needs.
Crag Walk Heritage Project – Merit

Crag Walk is a 150metre long 22m wide rock structure with a 4m wide public
access platform. It is the culmination of a 25 year campaign by the Naze
Protection Society. Crag Walk forms the initial stage in The Naze Heritage
Project which aims to protect the Naze and improve public knowledge, access
and facilities within the Naze area.
Minsmere Flood risk Management scheme – Merit

response to coastal pressures and climate change. We have raised the north

St Mary’s Church Buckden Living Stones Development was built by the
community, who formed their own construction company, for the community
to provide additional facilities at the church. Challenges including permissions,
funding and stability of the church were overcome by members of the
congregation, which included chartered civil engineers, to provide a highly
valued new community facility.

Twice the size of London’s Hyde Park, the 270 hectare (ha) Bowers Marsh
Nature Reserve habitat creation scheme is at the heart of the wider 930 ha
RSPB South Essex Marshes Reserve. The new saline lagoon, reservoir and
coastal wet grasslands of Bowers Marsh provide a safe habitat and source of
food for birds, while a network of public access facilities and nature trails will
make the area accessible to the public for the first time.

The River Nene Infrastructure Improvements comprise of works to the left
bank of the river in the Orton area of Peterborough. The project rectified
an area of existing sheet pile river wall that had failed and created new fixed
landing stages and visitor moorings. With over 1,200 registered boat users on
the River Nene the new facilities benefit a significant number of people and
enhance the river environment for over 10,000 local residents.

West Cambridge incorporating sustainable access, water management and
biodiversity to facilitate the University’s future development needs. Extensive

50,000m3 lake, cycle ways and elevated paved social areas.

Jarrold Bridge is a dynamic and unique structural form, a double propped
cantilever pedestrian bridge. The concept was for a bridge that traced a
sweeping arc and appears to float over the River Wensum with little visible
means of support.

rLnI southend Hovercraft ramp – Highly Commended
Principle Contractor: baM nuttal
The design and build contract undertaken by BAM Nuttall at RLNI Southend involved
the construction of a new 35m slipway. The innovative driven pile and precast
solution offered health and safety and environmental benefits over the conventional
‘insitu’ solution. The use of precast microfiber concrete enabled the team to deliver
a quality product with increased durability and abrasion resistant characteristics.
The modular design aided completion of the works within budget ahead of
programme whilst working within the confines of a compact and tidal site.

The Environment Agency’s Anglian Recon Project is a rolling annual
programme for the refurbishment of failing flood defence assets within the
region. The project includes the refurbishment of sluices, pumping stations,
flood embankments and river barriers. The scope of the work for each scheme
was based on a ‘do minimum’ approach thus maintaining the asset for a
further period of 5-10 years.
