<strong>2013</strong><br />
The ICE Regional Merit Awards are the ‘Oscars’ <strong>of</strong> the civil engineering<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>ession. Is there a project that delighted your client and inspires pride<br />
in your organisation? Don’t hide your light under a bushel. You can<br />
enter a project in one or more <strong>of</strong> four categories; Physical Achievement,<br />
Team Achievement, Technical Excellence and Sustainability.<br />

a1260 Pier refurbishment – Merit<br />

The A1260 Bridge Refurbishment scheme involved the use <strong>of</strong> complex<br />
temporary works, carefully planned traffic management and well considered<br />
construction methods to permit bridge jacking and pier refurbishment <strong>of</strong> four<br />
bridges on the one <strong>of</strong> the busiest roads in Peterborough. It caused minimal<br />
disruption and reduced future maintenance needs.<br />

Crag Walk is a 150metre long 22m wide rock structure with a 4m wide public<br />
access platform. It is the culmination <strong>of</strong> a 25 year campaign by the Naze<br />
Protection Society. Crag Walk forms the initial stage in The Naze Heritage<br />
Project which aims to protect the Naze and improve public knowledge, access<br />
and facilities within the Naze area.<br />

This project allows the coastal habitat at Minsmere to evolve naturally in<br />
response to coastal pressures and climate change. We have raised the north<br />

St Mary’s Church Buckden Living Stones Development was built by the<br />
community, who formed their own construction company, for the community<br />
to provide additional facilities at the church. Challenges including permissions,<br />
funding and stability <strong>of</strong> the church were overcome by members <strong>of</strong> the<br />
congregation, which included chartered civil engineers, to provide a highly<br />
valued new community facility.<br />

Twice the size <strong>of</strong> London’s Hyde Park, the 270 hectare (ha) Bowers Marsh<br />
Nature Reserve habitat creation scheme is at the heart <strong>of</strong> the wider 930 ha<br />
RSPB South Essex Marshes Reserve. The new saline lagoon, reservoir and<br />
coastal wet grasslands <strong>of</strong> Bowers Marsh provide a safe habitat and source <strong>of</strong><br />
food for birds, while a network <strong>of</strong> public access facilities and nature trails will<br />
make the area accessible to the public for the first time.<br />

The River Nene Infrastructure Improvements comprise <strong>of</strong> works to the left<br />
bank <strong>of</strong> the river in the Orton area <strong>of</strong> Peterborough. The project rectified<br />
an area <strong>of</strong> existing sheet pile river wall that had failed and created new fixed<br />
landing stages and visitor moorings. With over 1,200 registered boat users on<br />
the River Nene the new facilities benefit a significant number <strong>of</strong> people and<br />
enhance the river environment for over 10,000 local residents.<br />

St Germans is a modern state <strong>of</strong> the art pumping station and the largest land<br />
drainage pumping station in the UK – capable <strong>of</strong> pumping 100cumecs <strong>of</strong><br />
water every two minutes. It protects 70,000ha <strong>of</strong> grade A land and more than<br />
20,000 properties – worth £3.6bn.<br />

the construction <strong>of</strong> a new 35m slipway. The innovative driven pile and precast<br />
solution <strong>of</strong>fered health and safety and environmental benefits over the conventional<br />
‘insitu’ solution. The use <strong>of</strong> precast micr<strong>of</strong>iber concrete enabled the team to deliver<br />
a quality product with increased durability and abrasion resistant characteristics.<br />

The Environment Agency’s Anglian Recon Project is a rolling annual<br />
programme for the refurbishment <strong>of</strong> failing flood defence assets within the<br />

flood embankments and river barriers. The scope <strong>of</strong> the work for each scheme<br />
was based on a ‘do minimum’ approach thus maintaining the asset for a<br />

and visitor moorings. With over 1,200 registered boat users on the River Nene<br />
