Festival of Design and Innovation at BU 

This year’s Festival of Design & Innovation concept was designed by 

Product Design student Ryan Spackman 

The creativity, inventiveness and freedom of 

thought of our young people are some of our 

country’s greatest assets and have always 

underpinned the UK’s economic success. 

The opportunity to try out new ideas and 

create innovative new designs is vital to the 

future success of the UK economy which 

relies on innovation. The successful 

exploitation of new ideas and the fostering 

of new and emerging talent are absolutely 

essential to safeguard and deliver 

high-quality jobs, successful businesses, 

better products and services for 

consumers, and new, more 

environmentally friendly processes. 

The Festival is where Higher Education 

meets industry and commerce, providing a 

showcase for our students’ skills in design 

and innovation. We take pride in the quality 

of the project work and the ability of our 

students to employ the latest technology in 

the design of solutions to real problems. In 

fact many of the projects in this brochure are 

the direct result of industrial collaboration, a 

successful placement year or are linked to 

one of our research centres. 

Our design philosophy is based on holistic 

design, encompassing market need, 

function, engineering, style and aesthetics. 

The projects described in this brochure 

embrace this concept and if you attend the 

Festival, I hope you find time to talk to the 

students about their work and find out first 

hand about the research and design effort 

they have expended.

This is the culmination of four years work, applying 

academic studies and industry-linked experience to the 

solution of a design problem. The understanding and 

utilisation of these advanced tools gives these graduates 

an advantage in the commercial world, where reduced 

development costs and reduced time to market are critical. 

The students’ projects encompass creativity, analysis and 

technical understanding and their final designs are 

expected to be commercially viable, fully engineered and 

ready for manufacture.

Quickstart 

The first of what I hope to be a range of automotive repair products, Quickstart 

is the first portable jump starter with an on-site powering mechanism. Unlike 

most one-shot portable jump starters, Quickstart has the means to be powered 

on the move, at home or on location. 

Being part of the BSc (Hons) in Computer Aided Product Design has allowed 

me to explore my passion in the field of design. I love CAD and thanks to my 

time here, I finally can pursue a career in my dream job as a CAD designer. 

Vertical Assisted Bicycle Rack (VertiBrak) 

The VertiBrak is designed to assist in the storage and security of a bicycle in 

confined spaces. It utilises vertical space to reduce the size of the storage footprint. 

Its unique design integrates a counter-weight system that is contained within 

a corrosion resistant aluminium structure to lift, lower and store a bicycle 

smoothly, safely and securely. 

My time at BU and on placement with the Ministry of Defence has provided me 

with invaluable skills beneficial to my future career.

The Commuter Carriage 

The Commuter Carriage is a train seating system that offers normal seating in 

off-peak hours. In peak hours, the seat schematics can be changed to 

accommodate more passengers in a structured way. The driver anticipates 

congested periods and through an automated system the seats are lowered 

and six people can stand where four could sit. 

I enjoyed my placement role as an automotive packaging designer and I look 

forward to getting more of my designs manufactured in industry. 

Foldaway Naval Bed 

The foldaway naval bed is designed to combat the problem of submarines not 

having enough room on board for each crew member to have their own space. 

It is designed to be operated within a set time to make it quick and easy to use 

and so that it complies with defence standards. 

My time at BU and my year at the Ministry of Defence have helped me to 

develop my design and project management skills.

Fluid: Hydraulically Operated Mountain Bike 

Gear Shifting System 

This product aims to alleviate the problems with existing cable-driven derailleur 

systems such as corrosion, clogging, cable stretch and regular maintenance, by 

utilising a closed hydraulic system. 

During my placement with Microlights Ltd, I designed light fittings for retail 

environments, which helped me to advance my knowledge of design, processing 

and manufacturing methods. 

Automatic Plant Sprinkler 

This product is an automatic self-sufficient plant watering feeder and sprinkler 

that waters plants without the need for constant human interaction. It works with 

both indoor and outdoor pot plants and shrubs, and delivers a pre-programmed 

amount of water to prevent under- or over-watering. 

The product can be used to keep plants alive and thriving even while the 

household is away on holiday. 

My time at Bournemouth University has enabled me to develop personally, and as 

a designer, and I am now looking forward to implementing my skills in industry.

The Wanderer 

The Wanderer is a bicycle cargo trailer for use in off-road areas. The trailer 

provides a more convenient method of transporting camping equipment and 

includes a camping bed for extra comfort. 

Studying at BU has been challenging and extremely rewarding. The University 

gave me the chance to learn and develop skills in design disciplines and many 

different software packages. The knowledge I’ve gained from the course has 

been an invaluable stepping stone for a future career in the design industry. 

Splinter Motorcycle Helmet 

The Splinter Helmet is a novel concept providing quick & safe helmet removal 

following an accident. 

Modern helmets pose significant problems for paramedics, being both difficult & 

time consuming to remove from accident victims and delaying the start of potentially 

life-saving treatment. The Splinter Helmet offers an obvious, easy-to-use solution to 

this problem. Removing the slide clips unlocks the interior of the helmet, allowing it 

to slide apart. This makes removing the helmet a much simpler process, saving vital 

seconds without compromising on the safety features of the helmet itself. 

Studying at BU taught me awareness in design and developed my ethos for 

designing for purpose.

Maclaren Techno Moto 

The ‘Maclaren Techno Moto’ is a discrete motorised modification to the 

Techno XT that aids the laborious task of transporting a fully loaded pushchair 

up inclines. At the push of a button the motors apply a mechanical advantage, 

reducing the effort needed to push and making a daily task for many easier 

than ever. 

Bournemouth University has really cemented my desire to become a successful 

and respected product designer, with aspirations of a long career. 

Post-Ejection Hide 

Fighter jet pilots have an inefficient way of camouflaging themselves after ejection 

in emergency situations. Working in conjunction with officers at RAF Lyneham, my 

product effectively camouflages a single pilot while allowing enough room for basic 

survival manoeuvres, and is compact enough to fit underneath any ejection seat. 

My time spent at BU and the Ministry of Defence has allowed me to develop 

commercial, financial and project management skills as well as giving me an 

excellent insight into the defence sector.

H 2 Ouse - Water Conservation Learning Aid 

Fresh water is unnecessarily wasted within households. H 2 Ouse is a water 

conservation learning aid designed specifically for use in schools by Key Stage 

2 pupils aged 7-11 years. 

H 2 Ouse creates awareness and educates pupils in the ways in which water can 

be used efficiently by comparing water consumption in a household. This 

encourages children to conserve water from a young age, which in turn 

preserves and prolongs our depleting natural fresh water supplies. 

The Reflex System 

The Reflex System is designed to integrate with current lifeboat equipment that 

deals with spinal injuries. It offers a complete rescue system from the moment that 

the lifeboat arrives on the scene until the casualty is diagnosed in hospital. It 

comprises two main components: a spineboard with adjustable buoyancy and a 

basket to remove the casualty and the board from the water. 

BU and my placement in the aerospace industry offered me invaluable experiences 

which have helped me improve as a rounded and confident designer.

Loft Assistant 

The Loft Assistant is designed to reduce the number of accidents caused by 

lifting boxes into the loft. It uses a ratchet system to automatically hold the box 

at any height, so that the user can concentrate on their own safety without 

having to take the weight of the load, giving them peace of mind. 

My time at Bournemouth University, combined with my placement year as a 

Design Engineer, has taught me how to approach problems and design 

effective products. 

The Tidal Stream Energy Generator 

The Tidal Stream Energy Generator is designed to provide energy to small 

businesses located in coastal areas. It is smaller than existing similar products 

and cheaper, making it a more attractive investment for smaller businesses. It 

generates energy from tidal streams producing green electricity that can be 

used as mains electricity or sold to the national grid. 

My time at Bournemouth University and my placement have greatly influenced 

me as a designer and broadened my personal and professional skill set.

Bournemouth Bungee Tower 

The Bournemouth Bungee Tower would be the first permanent bungee tower 

in the UK, and would help to bring in more revenue into the town. It will be 

modularly fabricated and the curved design will give the feeling of movement 

and acceleration. 

I have really enjoyed my time at BU, where I have acquired key skills in many 

different areas that will help me in my future career as a designer.

Suspension Monitoring and Pre-Failure 

Detection System (SMPDS) 

Intended to be fitted to vehicles with passive suspension, this device monitors 

the state of the suspension. Accelerometers and strain gauges are used to 

measure the damping effect and material strain respectively. Any suspension 

faults are communicated through a dashboard display. 

The course has launched my design career by providing me with a broad 

understanding of engineering principles and career opportunities. 

Glass Bottle Reprocessing Device 

The Glass Bottle Reprocessing Device is designed to recycle glass bottles, 

turning them into drinking glasses. The aim is to make users aware of the 

possibilities for material reuse as well as provide a functional product. 

The knowledge and technical skills I have gained while studying at BU, and 

during a year working in industry for Pall Europe, have greatly enhanced my 

desire to work in the engineering sector and further developed my passion for 

design engineering.

Strength & Conditioning Sled 

The sled is something that I have wanted to redesign for indoor use; it is a 

piece of equipment that can help sports people improve their strength and 

conditioning so that they can perform to a high standard. 

My time at BU has reinforced my interest in advanced technologies, and 

given me skills that I believe have prepared me for a future career in design 

and engineering. 

Automatic Work Piece Positioning System 

in x, y, Ѳ Axis 

Positioning a work piece ready for machining takes time and any mistakes 

made can cost engineering companies time and money. 

This system will automatically position the work piece placed on the table 

system. This will reduce setting up time and reduce mistakes made, thereby 

reducing costs and increasing profits.

The Energy Regenerative EV 

Suspension System 

The Energy Regenerative EV Suspension System is a dissipated energy 

harvesting system. This system is used to collect the wasted energy in the 

vehicle suspension system. 

I have enjoyed my study at BU and gained the knowledge and understanding 

of the design process. 

Outdoor Clothes Dryer with Automated 

Rain Protection 

The dryer tackles the common problem of clothes getting soaked on the washing 

line when there is no-one around to bring them in when it starts raining. This 

wall-mounted dryer detects the onset of rain and automatically retracts the 

clothes into a waterproof cover, re-opening when the rain has stopped. 

Studying at Bournemouth University, together with a valuable work placement, 

has not only developed my design skills and engineering knowledge, but has 

inspired me to design for the future.

The Glider Belly Dolly 

The Glider Belly Dolly is a cradle with two side-by-side wheels supporting the 

fuselage of a glider when the wings are removed. Also used as a rigging-aid, 

its height can be adjusted using a foot pedal and the product features a height 

indicator and a wheel break to prevent it from rolling down a slope. 

The Design Engineering course, along with my job at FEA-Solutions (UK) Ltd, 

has given me the chance to develop my skills and knowledge, in order to start a 

career in the engineering sector. 

Enduro Bike Light 

In endurance mountain bike racing there has always been a trade-off between 

a light’s brightness and ‘burn time’ of the light. The Enduro Bike Light is 

designed to remove the need to recharge the bicycle light during an enduranceracing 

event without causing rolling resistance to the bicycle. 

During my time studying at Bournemouth University and working at my placement 

I have developed a further passion for Design Engineering and all its challenges.

Automated RV Levelling System 

The Automated Recreational Vehicle (RV) Levelling System design incorporates 

an innovative way in which to lift the chassis of an RV to a level plane. Instead 

of using conventional hydraulics jacks that are prone to failure, the new design 

uses a composite material of Kevlar infused in rubber and a metal casing to lift 

the vehicle. 

My time at Bournemouth University has facilitated my further study in 

engineering design. It has allowed my skills in the engineering field to flourish. 

Automatic Collapsible Crutch 

People use crutches for lower-limb injuries to decrease discomfort and assist 

walking. Users encounter storage problems when undergoing certain activities 

(such as getting in and out of a car, or leisure activities). The automatic 

collapsible crutch collapses telescopically with the push of a button and allows 

the user to control the length of the crutch according to their height.

obtain my degree.

Bicycle Auto-Changer 

The auto-changer is designed to allow bikes to be ridden without the need for 

changing gears. The concept was developed because many commuters are not 

aware of how to use gears properly, so the product eliminates the problem by 

changing gear for them automatically. 

During my time at Bournemouth University I have developed many key skills 

that I will take with me to aid my career. 

Vehicle Mobility Seat 

Elderly or disabled people often have difficulty getting into or out of their car. 

This mobility seat rotates and tilts forwards on exit, reducing the amount of 

knee flexion experienced by the user and making it easier for them to move 

between a seated and standing position. 

Studying at BU and completing a placement year with an aerospace company 

has given me a foundation in design engineering, and the inspiration to 

continue learning as I move into industry.

Integrated Bike Lock and Alarm 

As a passionate bicycle enthusiast I wanted to design something to help the 

cycling community reduce the massive bike theft problem in the UK. A cable is 

stored inside the bicycle’s seat post so the user has it with them at all times. 

The cable is alarmed and sounds when an attempt is made to break the lock. 

I’ve really enjoyed my time at BU; my course has developed my technical skills, 

while the university lifestyle has taught me valuable life skills. 

This degree aims to produce graduates who 

can respond to market needs proactively, 

designers whose art is technology in the 

service of humanity, who can create theatre 

as equally as fulfil function.

GTC: Gaming Luxury or Necessity? 

Inspired by the Hollywood film Transformers, the GTC is able to transform into 

various positions to enable the user to play while seated, standing or even 

lying down. This is designed to provide the ultimate gaming experience. This 

unique product is designed for young and middle-aged bachelors who are 

passionate about gaming and able to spend a lot of money! 

Studying at Bournemouth University has enabled me to produce design at the 

highest standard and has also opened many doors for my future career. 

Tattoo Machine Redesign 

Tattoo machines have forever been linked to anti-social, grungy surroundings, 

yet recently tattoos have become more accepted in our society. The machine, 

however, has stayed the same. The redesign will create a machine that’s more 

connected to the new generation of the tattooing lifestyle. 

This is just the beginning for my design career.

Earthquake Logistics and Relief Vehicle 

In disaster-prone regions of the world, it is evident that rapid and efficient 

response to earthquakes is a growing issue. My vehicle is predominantly 

function-based, allowing order to be restored to an otherwise chaotic state. 

It addresses issues of panic and fear through its raw aesthetics and ethos of 

security, as well as the logistical issues of communication and aid relief. 

BU has aided me in developing my creativity and skill set, which I hope to 

apply to a exciting career. 

Antarctic Housing Units 

The Antarctic Housing Unit is intended to create a more welcoming, homely 

experience whilst still functioning as a protective form of housing within the 

extreme Antarctic environment. It is transportable and compactable, making 

for a sensible, effective solution to an existing problem. 

Studying Industrial Design has furthered my determination to succeed in 

industry and have a better understanding of design.

Eelingdesign 


The Olympic Vista 

The Olympic Vista is a monorail system which creates a unique experience 

by transporting the user over the London 2012 Olympic Stadium in a glass 

viewing capsule that tilts and turns, giving the impression of floating above 

the stadium. The inspiration for my design came from the London Eye, roller 

coasters and the gyroscope. 

Studying Industrial Design at Bournemouth University has taught me to 

“stop worrying about getting it right first time” in the initial stages of design. 

VIP Accommodation Hopper 

Tents have been at the centre of music festivals for several decades. As these 

events become more popular, accommodation fit for the 21st century is needed. 

Luxury has not been a word normally associated with festival accommodation, 

until now. This VIP cabin evokes a feeling reminiscent of camping under 

canvas, yet offers the luxury of today’s top hotels. 

Bournemouth University has given me the skills to develop my designs using a 

number of techniques that are transferable in all industries.

Sightseeing Airship Gondola 

This is an innovative Airship Gondola specifically aimed at the sightseeing 

market in Africa. It has been designed to provide a calming environment 

and breathtaking views. It has a unique design that differentiates itself from 

competitors through its ergonomic principles and stunning aesthetics. 

Studying Industrial Design at Bournemouth University has provided me with 

the skills required to pursue a career in design. The course has been both 

challenging and rewarding, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my four years here. 

Formula One Driver Relaxation Pod 

Sportsmen feel stress daily, and media attention means there’s no time to relax. 

Formula One drivers are constantly in the public eye, and their environment is 

fast paced and exhausting. The relaxation pod provides a peaceful oasis 

allowing physical and mental tranquility. Experiencing luxury and absolute 

comfort in a state of the art recliner without interruptions and noise leaves 

them prepared and refuelled. 

Bournemouth University freed my creativity in design, enhancing my desire to 

pursue a career in the design industry.

GenMusic Player 

The GenMusic Player is a digital media player for a generation of analogue 

music users. Using ergonomics and visual aesthetics, the product is userfriendly 

for the generations from the 1960s. Current music players are aimed 

at the younger generations of today, which are not as ergonomically or 

visually user-friendly. 

BU has given me the opportunity to explore CAD based design as well as 

giving me the freedom to achieve my personal goals as an Industrial Designer. 

Riverview 

Riverview is a modern and extravagant take on the traditional canal boat,

CosmetiKit 

CosmetiKit is the female equivalent of the Swiss Army Knife, to be used as a 

makeup survival kit on a night out. I wanted to incorporate all of the essential 

cosmetics required for tending to your appearance, without having to carry 

an abundance of makeup. The philosophy behind this project was to create a 

precious kit of high quality which will be kept for many years.

Business Tourist Transport Vehicle 

Entertaining overseas business clients is very important; inviting them over and 

entertaining them can result in clinching business deals. This vehicle is designed 

to act as the 19th hole of a golf course, securing that all-important business 

agreement, while on a sightseeing tour of London. Business clients are able to 

relax in comfort and experience something they have not received before. 

Bournemouth University has given me the drive and determination to be 

creative and follow my passion for designing. 

The Anti Home Gym 

For my final major project I wanted to design a home gym for bodybuilders 

who are already members of a gym, but for one reason or another can’t get to 

the gym every day. The driving force behind this project was that it is not a 

bench press; it should be an object of desire within the home.

RADiator 

The concept of the RADiator is to offer ski hotels the option of a stylish, 

interesting and more efficient alternative to traditional panel or underfloor 

heating systems. 

The RADiator combines visible underfloor heating with a ‘chimney’ like structure 

to move and circulate the hot air produced underfloor. All this comes in a modern 

and clean-cut package of steel and glass. 

The RADiator is a user-friendly product, encouraging users to interact and get 

greater enjoyment from the experience.

Epic Solutions – ‘An enhanced cinema experience, bringing the cinema to 

you.’ Epic Solutions eliminates the hassle and annoyances associated with

The product is for the home user, marketed for special occasions,

Creative Design Environment 

The intent of this project was to create an inspiring, creative space allowing for 

designers to work collaboratively. 

It focuses on interaction between creatives by providing a functional, dynamic 

and stimulating space to work in. The fluid design engages the users with 

their surroundings and further breaks the mould of the familiar modular, 

grid-like offices. 

The invaluable skills I have learnt at BU will provide the foundation for me to 

realise my ambitions within the design industry. 

Bournemouth Travel Interchange Bus Station 

With the use of natural forms, colour and glass, the travel interchange bus 

station ignites an area surrounded by blandness. The bus station provides a 

unique and exciting experience to passengers as they wait to board, pass by,

Tranquil is a personal office space for people who want to work from home but 

cannot afford to commit any room for an office. Tranquil gives the user a place 

where they can work that is separate from their home without the hassle of

P.I.P. (Patient Information Portal) 

A digital replacement for paper based patient records. 

In terms of the user, P.I.P.’s design focuses on ergonomics, efficiency and 

adaptability. These are integral factors in providing hospital staff with an 

intuitive, usable product that will help them in caring for patients. 

On a patient level, P.I.P. aims to improve the patient-doctor relationship by 

dispelling the feeling of intimidation often induced by hospital equipment and 

increasing the positive interaction between the patient and their carer.

Wildlife Documentary Pod 

With a global increase in wildlife filmmaking, a solution is required to facilitate 

our ever-increasing contact with wildlife. Designed to withstand the 

demanding environment of Kenya, the pod allows the user to film panoramic 

shots of wildlife in a safe and comfortable setting with minimal disturbance. 

It is designed to allow a standard 4x4 vehicle to tow it to location, where it can 

be set up and left to blend into the surroundings. 

S.C.C. Pavilion 

Southwater Cricket Club have played at their existing ground since 1890 

and are now moving to new premises. This design is focused on player and 

spectator interaction, together with superior player and spectator viewing 

galleries. The design also shows the club’s desire to move into the future.

‘Mor Yemeni’ Theatre 

Situated alongside the busy shipping lanes of the Eastern Mediterranean, 

Famagusta is home to many historical structures. However, as negligence and 

isolation threatens Northern Cyprus, this project aims to help rebuild a 

healthy community and draw international interest through arts and culture. 

Whilst preserving the gothic identity of St Nicholas Cathedral, various 

dynamic elements suggest a moving and inspiring cultural venue.

THE HIVE (Specialists in Fetish and Fantasies) 

Originally a small themed hotel developed into a self-contained ‘hive’ created 

to facilitate fetish and fantasy desires popular in modern society. 

Extensive research has shown an increasing acceptance towards sexual 

desires. Other cultures have successfully cultivated the need to design for 

them and I feel England is on the cusp of accepting such an establishment, 

making now the perfect time to begin design, giving ‘The Hive’ the 

opportunity to reach the market first. 

The Rig Dive Centre 

It is estimated that there are over 4,000 offshore oil rigs throughout the 

Gulf of Mexico. As companies face the complex challenge of removing these 

structures, the need for alternative uses of the rigs increases. My proposal is 

to transform a Jack-Up Offshore Rig into a scuba diving centre, creating a 

new and unique diving experience. 

Working for both United Designers and Gabrielle Holland has provided me 

with invaluable first hand experience of the industry, enhancing my attributes 

as a designer.

TwentyFourSeven offers a unique luxury pastime experience within the 

vibrant city of Brighton. A boutique casino is carefully and sensitively 

integrated on the first floor with exclusive private gaming areas offering a mix

appeal to the city’s diverse population. 

My placement year at Michael Phillips Architects has developed my skills to a

POSITIVE - A Wellness Centre for Young People 

My project aims to help counteract the issues faced by young people aged 

13-19. By creating a space that encourages positive thinking and actions,

Dropshot Barn Rehabilitation Centre 

Dropshot Barn lies in the Chilterns, near the prestigious Ellesborough Golf 

Club. My design project is to create a unique training and rehabilitation 

centre for golfers. The site will offer multi-level facilities for all ages and 

abilities to develop their game and technique, with a specialist injuries clinic 

providing physical and emotional support for rapid recovery. 

Working for Max Bentheim on the Scarlet Hotel in Cornwall has provided me 

with extraordinary experience and inspiration to carry forward into my final year. 

The Drop-in Clinic, Bournemouth 

A Bournemouth super clinic that is accessible to everyone. I will demonstrate 

an environment that will be an incomparable insight into the possibilities of 

healthcare surroundings. It will be a medical centre that combines accessible 

care for minor illness and injury with practical additional facilities, all 

incorporated in one site.

Brewery Skate Park Dorchester 

As soon as I saw Dorchester’s brewery, with its beautiful architecture and space, 

I knew what I wanted to do for my final project. Having had an interest in urban 

sport for a long time I had the chance to design my very own skate park. It would 

not be ‘just another skate park’ but a place where you can learn to ride/skate 

board, shops with ‘try before you buy’ and a wonderful comfortable cafe for 

visitors to watch and relax. 

Bella Fuga – Eco-Friendly Resort 

Bella Fuga means the ‘beautiful escape’ in Italian. The resort aims to reduce 

CO 2 emissions by changing Hong Kong’s typical flying holiday habits into a 

distinctive holiday experience without the need for flying. The project 

transforms the existing female prison in Chi Ma Wan, Hong Kong, into the 

city’s first luxury eco-friendly resort, encouraging visitors to enjoy and 

discover natural wonders during their stay.

Gorse Ride Community Centre 

In the last decade obesity has risen and with the current recession, predictions 

are that the number of obese children is set to increase. Situated in Wokingham, 

Gorse Ride Community Centre focuses on providing a solution to childhood 

obesity. Facilities at the centre include cookery schools, fitness facilities, retail, 

and advice from health professionals. 

My placement at Douglas Wallace provided me with design experience and 

confidence that has been invaluable towards my final year and my future career 

in the design industry.

Hectic 21st century work schedules and the drive to do as much as possible 

with their free time have left sleeping schedules for modern men and women

Located on the top floors of a multi-storey car park in Woking, 10 Floors Up is a

St Nicholas Shelter 

Homelessness is a growing problem in the UK. My concept provides an 

innovative service for the homeless within the London Borough of Sutton. 

Thoughtfully designed, it concentrates on relief and stability to address the 

issue. Relief of street homelessness is tackled with mobile shelters that deal 

directly with the practicalities of living on the street. Stability is provided by a 

welcoming building that creates a sense of community, facilitating the 

rehabilitation of the residents toward independent living. 

Regenerate, Revive 

The project aims to take a proactive approach to reducing stress in the 

workplace. It takes an unhealthy office environment and injects different 

facilities to encourage employees to actively improve their health and wellbeing. 

Whilst studying at Bournemouth University I have learned a wide range of skills 

that have developed my ability as a designer. These skills were further 

developed and tested in a working environment when I completed a year’s

Future X-treme 

Extreme sports are a physically and mentally challenging activity which 

demonstrate imagination and creativity. I have designed an indoor extreme 

sports centre which enables the community to get involved with extreme sports 

in a safe and controlled environment. Providing such a creative sport with the 

environment it needs removes the typical bad ‘skate’ branding. 

My time at BU has taught me the fundamental elements of the design industry, 

with my placement year working for Masterpieces putting these skills into practice. 

Filmertainment 

My project is an art house cinema that includes luxurious seating for a small 

number of users designed around comfort. A small café including specially 

designed pods has been provided for refreshments. I wanted to create a space 

that allows the user to experience the magic of film rather than worry about 

making themselves comfortable.

Greater Prospects Job Centre 

Unemployment is prominent in Swindon, where more than one in every ten people 

is unemployed. Responding to this problem, I redesigned the former Great Western 

Railway Pattern Store and current restaurant into an innovative Job Centre. My 

philosophy was to create a dynamic labour market by equipping the unemployed 

with the tools needed to enter the job market. 

My placement and time at BU fuelled my creativity to generate this idea and 

endowed me with the skills with which to complete it. 

The Blot Gallery 

Graffiti art has eventually been recognised by the art world, yet graffiti artists 

still struggle to get their work displayed. Using the UK’s graffiti capital, Bristol, 

as the location, my graffiti gallery concept not only exhibits exciting, original art 

to the public, it also provides facilities for passionate graffiti artists to develop 

and practise their skills in a safe, socially stimulating environment. The 

restoration of a currently derelict, listed building will be appreciated by a 

community that embraces Bristol’s graffiti culture.

Mighty Oaks Renovation 

While on my final year on the Interior Design Course I have been working at a 

secondary school with students with behavioural problems. In my design project I 

am using the skills I have acquired during my placement year and integrating them 

with what I have learned in the school environment to offer children a rejuvenated 

canteen to bring it up-to-date with the surrounding buildings on the school site, 

offering behavioural students a place to complete work experience and to learn a 

trade and necessary life skills. 

Weymouth & Portland Olympic Sailing 

Training Centre 

Weymouth & Portland harbour will host the 2012 Olympic sailing. I have designed 

a training centre that accommodates team GB’s training needs. The centre allows 

the athletes to have a private facility in which they can train, eat and sleep for any 

length of time within an atmosphere that reinforces the motivation to win. 

I decided to pursue a project in this field following my placement at a luxury 

yacht designer, where I improved my computer and graphic skills and sharpened 

my eye for design.

The Maltings Hotel 

My aim is to restore a currently neglected and abandoned building. The building 

(a former Maltings) occupies a prime site close to a main-line commuter belt railway 

station. A building such as this would make a magnificent boutique hotel giving it 

back to the town as an art form itself. Following the simplistic principles of 

architecture, form follows function. 

A young designer with enthusiasm and passion for creating an aesthetically 

pleasing design, I have been inspired by the architectural designs I have seen 

during my placement in Miami, which has also opened the door to my future career. 

Look BEYOUnd 

I am designing a centre that promotes a positive body image among 

adolescent girls. Somewhere for them to take a journey, learn, interact, 

play and be themselves.

Team Building Activity Centre 

1-11 Sidwell Street’s prominent position in Exeter City Centre is the ideal location 

for the only Indoor Activity Centre for Team Building in the South West. The large 

volume of space has given me the flexibility to fulfil the varying requirements of 

each activity, whilst the design allows the teams to experience a journey through 

movement around the building. 

My placement at MCM Architecture provided me with invaluable experience and 

confidence which I have drawn upon for my final year project. 

Wilton’s Music Hall 

Wilton’s Music Hall is a beautifully faded grand old music hall that has survived 

for over 150 years. I plan to transform this building into a creative hub for the 

performing arts, encouraging the local community to participate and use the 

centre as a creative outlet and as a place to hone and develop their skills as well 

as learning new ones.

PROJECT:POINT 

The Point in Milton Keynes generated attention in 1985 as ‘Europe’s first fullyintegrated 

entertainment venue’. What once was an iconic piece of architecture is 

now in a state of need. PROJECT:POINT is a sustainable travel interchange for 

people using bikes and public transport around Milton Keynes. It will promote the 

importance of green travel, how it can help fight climate change and the ways in 

which it can encourage healthier lifestyles. 

Professional experience with 3d Architects amplified my passion for design, giving 

me an invaluable insight into the design industry. 

The Cosmetic Clinic, 25 Soho Square 

With cosmetic surgery becoming increasingly popular, this clinic provides a 

luxury experience for the client. Hotel rooms, catering facilities and a beauty 

salon provide the patient with a peaceful retreat in the heart of London where 

they can rest and recuperate post-treatment. The inclusion of a ‘try it on’ area 

creates a non-threatening ‘try before you buy’ atmosphere.

A Comparative Investigation Between 2D 

and 3D Sound for Visualisation 

My final year project involved developing a three dimensional Ambisonic sound 

system which can be synchronised to a moving image. This was used in a 

comparative study to compare its functionality to 5.1 Surround Sound. 

My time at BU has been a fantastic educational experience, which has supplied 

me with the skills and confidence to pursue a profession in audio. 

Sound & Image Location Test 

The test experiment I designed set out to test the ability of various people from 

musical and non-musical backgrounds to locate sounds from around the listener 

using 5.1 Surround Sound while watching a video which played across 4 monitors 

directly in front of them. 

The intention was to find out whether subjects would tend to draw their 

answers towards the location of the imagery, and if this was the case to suggest 

that home surround sound systems may be drastically limited by the size of the 

television set. 

Studying at BU has allowed me to meet many people from various walks of life 

and helped me to discover what it is I am truly interested in.

Wiiflex is a motivational piece of music software that has been developed to aid 

in the delivery of physiotherapy to special needs children with such disabilities 

as cerebral palsy. The system utilises the innovative motion-sensing technology 

of the Nintendo Wii remote to play sounds, songs and change colours. 

I have enjoyed my time at Bournemouth University and it has taught me to how 

to work on my own initiative. 

Wii Remote Guitar Effects Processor 

A new and innovative way for a guitarist to create effects based on their 

movements. All movements recorded from the guitar are transferred into an 

amount of effect applied. This allows the guitarist to accentuate their movement 

to create personalised effects in order to captivate the emotion and individuality 

of a guitarist based on their playing style. 

This year has taught me to be independent, a great stepping stone for my future 

music career.

Acoustics with Network Music Performances 

and Open Sound Control 

This investigative project outlines two future technologies in creative music and 

audio: Network Music Performances and Open Sound Control. These two 

technologies are combined to demonstrate an audio production technique, 

Remote Acoustics. 

GPS iSYNTH (iPhone Application) 

Using the iPhone’s GPS data, the GPS iSYNTH application provides a unique audio 

waveform that can be manipulated to create a variety of synthesised sounds. 

These sounds will vary depending on the users location globally, offering a 

revolutionary means to sound creation on one standalone portable audio unit. 

Studying at Bournemouth University has enabled me to develop a unique set of 

musical and technological skills that I will take on to postgraduate education. 

Studying Music & Audio Technology at Bournemouth University has been a very 

satisfying experience, broadening my knowledge over a wide range of very 

helpful topics from studio production to graphical programming.

Visual Splash 

The Visual Splash bridges the gap between DJ performance and VJ 

performance to allow one person to achieve both. It offers a creative but quick 

way to achieve visual mixing of videos and images via multi-touch control in an 

easily managed manner. 

Algorithmic Reverberation Plug-In 

I am researching, designing and creating an algorithmic reverberation VST 

plug-in. The plug-in defines the reverberation time of a room based on its 

dimensions and total absorption properties. The research covers various aspects 

of how to artificially replicate satisfactory sounding reverb.

Dub Commander 

Dub Commander is a system that enables a drummer to control synthesisers 

from their drum kit without any additional pads or switches – allowing the easy 

construction of breathtaking live performances. Dub Commander also features 

a certain amount of built in intelligence to allow for the random generation of 

musical passages. 

Bournemouth University has taught me the importance of scrutiny. 

Granular Synthesiser 

Granulation is an area of sound synthesis that is also fundamental to the 

concepts of time and pitch shifting, all of which are important principles in 

modern day music production. This project incorporated all of these areas, 

resulting firstly in an innovative Granulation Designer, programmed using the 

graphical Max/MSP language, and finally a Granular Synthesiser virtual 

instrument, which was programmed in the C++ language. 

My time at BU has introduced me to a range of different programming methods,

Music Mixer 

Music Mixer is a musical computer game developed for nursery children. 

By matching picture elements together, children can create their own unique 

musical tracks, or try to finish the game by finding the seven complete picture/ 

music themes. 

Studying at Bournemouth University has developed my professional skills and 

sparked an interest in computer programming, something I will be taking 

forward to my job with multinational IT consultancy firm Logica. 

Binaural Audio Recording at an 

Affordable Price 

By conducting scientific experiments I set out to identify the head-related 

transfer functions that are most significant in binaural audio recording to a home 

studio enthusiast, as well as raising the awareness of the technique.

Gelert Camping Tent Storage 

My project is designed for young families going camping that want to get up 

and running as quickly and hassle-free as possible. I chose this concept for the 

ease that it will take for a couple to erect a storage unit and the minimal space 

it will take up when in transportation. 

My time at BU has been filled with excitement and a lot of hard work and I 

have learned so much from my peers and fellow students. 

Halls of Residence Electricity Monitor 

This product is the solution to excessive electricity consumption in all-inclusive 

accommodation such as student halls of residence. The monitor provides 

residents with feedback on how much electricity is being used in each flat and, 

uniquely, it transmits information over existing power lines in the building. 

Studying at BU has been a great platform for refining my skills 

as a designer, and it gave me the opportunity to work for design

Predator VX360 Self Levelling Mount 

My self-levelling camera mount is designed for use with the Predator VX360. 

It allows the camera system to be secured to a deck or hull surface and the 

gimbal pivot system tilts the camera as the craft moves, providing a smooth 

and horizon-steady picture. 

My time here at Bournemouth University has opened my eyes to the world of 

design and the opportunities that it offers and I hope to develop a professional 

career in product design. 

Scooter Trailer 

The scooter trailer is designed for scooter users that travel and shop often, 

needing more storage space. The trailer attaches to the back of the scooter and 

can be folded away when parked. The storage compartment to be detached 

and used as a suitcase for holidays 

I have enjoyed my time in Bournemouth University studying product design very 

much. I found the experience of undertaking the projects and having the chance

Sitter Frame 

This product is a combination of a wheelchair, walker/rollator and zimmer 

frame. The product gives the user the freedom of walking alone as well as the 

use of a wheelchair if they so wish. The product can change between walker 

and wheelchair within seconds. It also has a braking system and a respite seat 

when needed. 

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at BU and would highly recommend studying 

here to anyone. 

Lintex: Lint and Bobble Remover 

Lintex is a new, improved, battery-powered lint brush designed to remove the 

accumulation of lint/bobbles on fabrics. It has three functions; removal of lint 

with just the flick of a switch, a de-bobbler to remove any delicate bobbles 

without damaging the fabric and an integrated self-cleaning mode leaving less 

maintenance for the user. 

I can honestly say that my innovative, creative and technical design skills have 

significantly improved since starting at Bournemouth University and I look 

forward to working in the design industry.

Bay-be: A Portable Changing Unit for Babies 

Bay-be is a unique product which allows the user to change a baby’s nappy 

with ease and convenience. The product provides a rigid structure for a baby to 

be cleaned quickly using the products housed inside; a segmented shade pulls 

over for added privacy. The product’s snap-fit structure allows easy 

disassembly for cleaning and improving hygiene. 

My time at Bournemouth University has expanded my design skills both 

technically and creatively in addition to developing my enthusiasm for the 

design industry. 

Cycle Dry: Commuter Clothes Dryer 

I have chosen to design a cyclewear clothes dryer for environmentally 

conscious workers. Cycle Dry stores and dries clothing that has become wet on 

the journey to work. Cycle Dry works by circulating air at room temperature 

through the under-desk unit during working hours. 

Studying Product Design at Bournemouth University has enabled me develop

Snowboard Waxer 

My final year project, the snowboard waxer, is used to melt and spread wax 

over a snowboard base. The problem with existing products is that they 

require two hands and two slow processes. 

The new product stores and releases wax, requires one hand and turns two 

processes into a quicker single one. A better, more effective product has been 

created at a competitive price. 

This course has shown me the theoretical and practical sides of the product 

design industry. 

Desktop Water Cooler and Filter 

The Desktop water cooler and filter is a product that can filter and chill water in 

a matter of minutes. It is aimed for use in the home or office environment 

where clean water may not be available. The water storage area is removable 

so that it can be filled easily from a tap. 

My time at BU, combined with a valuable placement, has given me an amazing

The Lotus 

The Lotus is a miniature robust multi-fuel camp stove. Specifically designed for 

outdoor adventures in all environments, it will work at high altitude and burn 

most liquid and gas fuels. Its lightweight durable design helps it withstand the 

most extreme conditions. Capable of boiling water in under five minutes, it’s a 

useful tool for a camper on the move. 

It seems like a distant memory when I started my degree at Bournemouth 

University! My time here has helped tune my skills to a competent 

professional level. 

Automatic Tea-Making Alarm Clock

My final year product is a tea-making alarm clock to wake people in the 

morning with a hot pot of fresh tea. My design has taken inspiration from a 

product that boomed in the 1970s and 1980s and is based around an old design 

classic: the “Teasmade”.

Eco-Compression Bin 

My time at BU has helped me gain valuable skills helping in the development of 

my final year project, the Eco-Compression Bin. The design is a waste disposal 

unit, which has the ability to store and crush the contents hygienically, in 

order to maximise the available space and minimise the bulk of material. 

The mechanism used must ensure that the bin bag does not split in the 

crushing process and that the waste is simple and easy to dispose of.

My project demonstrates an ability to create design that is simple but works 

both in the functionality it offers the user and the simplicity of its assembly.

Cordless Drill With Built-In Guide 

This power tool allows the DIY consumer to drill holes perpendicular to 

flat surfaces. It also works in conjunction with a depth measuring feature; 

the design will help eliminate possible human error when drilling. The 

extension arm is fully retractable allowing it to operate as a screwdriver. 

After a lot of hard work and an excellent placement, I feel that I have refined my 

design skills to prepare myself for an enjoyable and exciting career in design. 

Removable Panniers for Commuters 

Studying Product Design has shown me the impact that great design has on 

the world. The majority of pannier products on the market are permanently 

fitted to the bicycle or require specialist fittings. This product is aimed at 

commuters as a quick, stylish and simple alternative that does not compromise 

the practicality of the bicycle. 

The system allows the user to quickly load the individual panniers and then fix 

them to the temporary rack. Once the user has arrived at their destination, they 

can detach individual compartments or, if they wish, swiftly remove the entire 

pannier system leaving the bicycle in its original condition.

Electric Multi-Tool Screwdriver 

The EMT screwdriver stores six tool bits. The user can pick the tool bits by 

rotating a barrel; a sliding button selects and moves the tool bit into place, 

ready to use. 

With a blend of aesthetic and technical challenges this has been an ideal 

project to show my wide range of skills. 

I have learned a wide range of skills at BU. After an excellent work placement 

at Factorydesign I am looking forward to working as a product designer. 

ProBike Cycle Carrier 

Probike is a self loading, roof mounted, bike carrier that assists the loading of a 

bike onto the roof of a car without the use of a step or second person. It is fully 

adjustable to accommodate most bikes, removing any chance of strain or 

damage to the user or car.

Predator Kite Line Mount 

The requirement for my final project was to provide a mount for a Predator 

VX360 camera to be used while kite surfing. The challenge was to mount the 

camera in the kite’s lines without affecting the kite’s performance, therefore 

capturing great footage of the rider. 

The friendly and informative atmosphere at Bournemouth University has given 

me a broad knowledge of product design, which has been further enhanced by 

my placement year at Craftwood Interiors. 

Solar Bike Light Mudguards 

For commuter cyclists, to be seen is to be safe. This product is designed to take 

the hassle out of having lights on a bicycle. Once fitted, the solar panels charge 

the internal batteries, giving the user fully charged bright lights whenever they 

are needed while guarding from road spray. 

I feel my time at Bournemouth University and my industrial placement have 

really given me the skills and passion to make it in the real world of design.

Potável: Water Purification Device for 

African Zones Lacking Safe Drinking Water 

Potável is designed to purify unsafe water fetched two or more miles away by 

families in need in Africa. It incorporates ground-breaking UV light technology, 

killing bacteria, viruses and algae whilst being pushed/pulled home. 

Solar Utility Light 

This project is a motion-detecting lighting system for use as a welcoming porch 

light/lighting for a shed or garage/security light. The lighting system will be solar 

powered to save running costs and to help promote to save the environment. 

My time at Bournemouth University has been a great four years.

Pivottle: Kettle for Arthritic Users 

Pivottle is a water boiling and pouring system for arthritic users. By improving 

user interaction methods, reduced amounts of flexibility and strength are 

required to use this product, minimising the strain on the wrist joint in 

comparison to traditional kettle systems. 

My time at Bournemouth University and on placement at Acctim Ltd has been 

extremely enjoyable, helping me develop my skills not only in the area of 

product design, but also in related fields such as marketing and finance. 

Tent Star (Tent Lighting) 

Tent Star is a magnet mounted, solar powered tent light that can be attached 

to any part of a tent for use as a ceiling light. It has magnets on both sides and 

can be mounted on the outside of the tent during the day for solar charging. It 

also has a USB port for charging portable electronic devices while out camping. 

I have thoroughly enjoyed my experiences at BU and at my placement

Brake Fluid Tester 

Brake failure can be caused by increased water levels in the brake fluid; this 

product has been developed to avoid this scenario by passing a voltage 

through the fluid and testing the percentage of water content. It is an 

important tool for MOT mechanics. 

The wide range of experience that the lecturers at Bournemouth University 

have has really helped me learn how to make a high-quality product that 

stands out. 

SAFERSharps 

SAFERSharps is a mechanical hypodermic needle destroyer that aids in 

reducing blood-borne viruses through needle stick injuries. The device shears 

through hypodermic needles and then stores them in an effective and safe 

manner, removing any risk to the user. The product is targeted at aidworkers in 

developing countries.

Renewable Lighting For Disaster Areas 

My product addresses the importance of different lighting needs for victims of 

natural disasters to enable a better quality of life and aid the recovery process. 

My time at BU has given me the confidence to pursue a design career. The 

course has developed skills that I can apply in industry. My placement year at 

Dextra group plc as a Luminaire Designer was an enjoyable experience that 

enabled me to further develop my skillset. 

Automatic Composter 

My project addresses the issue of UK households disposing of biodegradable 

waste in landfill. The solution uses the composting process and engineering 

techniques to deliver compost to the user in a short time scale. 

I have very much enjoyed my time at Bournemouth University. It has allowed

The Automatic Artist’s Paintbrush Cleaner 

My time at Bournemouth University, along with my industrial work placement, 

has enabled me to develop into a well-rounded designer able to undertake 

design projects in an holistic and professional manner. 

I have been given an opportunity to demonstrate this in my final year project, 

which focuses on developing a product that automatically cleans oil or waterbased 

paint from up to ten artist paintbrushes in a single session. This allows 

the artist to take care of their paintbrushes more conveniently. 

Umbrella Dryer 

My product is an umbrella dryer to be used in leisure and business 

environments such as shopping centres, hotels, restaurants and office 

buildings. The user simply places their umbrella in the top of the drum where a 

sensor will be triggered and a short blast of powerful, warm air will circulate 

into the main cylinder.

Renewable Energy Teaching Aid 

My product aims to enforce the curriculum teaching renewable energy in 

schools, ensuring it becomes a lynchpin of a child’s education. It is to be used 

in early secondary school, where children are getting to grips with more 

advanced concepts of science. It is a modular development that has the ability 

to change as sources of energy inevitably will. 

My time at BU, coupled with my industrial placement year, has helped with 

my professional development and inspired the idea of eventually starting my 

own business. 

ToothTime 

Dental problems among children are very common these days. ToothTime is an 

aid designed to teach children good brushing technique and routine from a 

young age. It has a changeable character display, audio encouragement and 

chart which records users’ brushing activity each week.

Gelert Renewable Energy Hub 

The renewable energy hub is a project based on a design brief set by the 

camping company Gelert. The product provides an environmentally friendly 

way to cater for family camping needs, facilitating the modern camping 

experience. The product stores and distributes electrical energy generated 

primarily from a solar panel. 

My time at BU, combined with experience gained from a year in industry, has 

provided the foundations for me to design realistic solutions in a creative and

Camping has become a much cosier way to holiday and families now expect a

Child’s Energy Construction Toy 

My project is a construction toy for 3-6 year old children, powered by a 

wind-up dynamo. The parts can be arranged in a number of different ways to 

create different vehicles, producing a range of sounds and lighting effects. 

I leave Bournemouth University with a wealth of experience and knowledge. 

Industrial work placements in the UK and abroad have allowed me to develop 

my skills in a professional situation. I look forward to the career ahead of me. 

Electronic Ear Irrigator 

Currently ear irrigation is a highly litigated area and a process which is time 

consuming and often unsuccessful. My product has addressed these issues and 

heats the water to 40 degrees Celsius and maintains this temperature 

throughout the procedure. Nurses now no longer have to continually test the 

water temperature and can instead focus completely on the patient. 

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at BU and have learnt many valuable skills 

that I cannot wait to use in my design career.

Automatic Fish Feeder 

The automatic fish feeder is a machine that is attached to your fish tank and 

dispenses fish food when you are away on holiday, or just living a busy 

lifestyle. With its trapdoor mechanism and air pump attachment it will 

overcome the common problem of clogging and ensure the constant and 

accurate feeding of your fish. 

It’s been an awesome journey to becoming a product designer and I look 

forward to a varied and challenging future. 

Lap ‘n Lap 

Lap ‘n Lap is an innovative portable laptop rest for the home environment. 

Using modern phase-changing materials, the latent heat from the laptop is 

dispersed away from the user. The unique combination of silicone pads and 

memory foam provide extreme comfort for the user. The product reduces risks 

of male infertility caused by long durations of heat exposure.

Supermarket Shopping Trolley for the Elderly 

The elderly account for 12% of supermarket customers. My design provides the 

elderly with an easier low-capacity alternative to standard trolleys which they 

find difficult to manoeuvre and control. The design is easy to manoeuvre and 

has a brake system to give the user greater control. This aims to benefit the 

user, other customers and supermarket staff. 

My three years at Bournemouth University and my placement at Tesco Design 

has vastly broadened my skills as a designer and given me the experience 

needed to take on greater challenges. 

SAFETouch Interactive Dispenser 

SAFETouch is designed to support the NHS Healthcare Associated Infection 

Program by providing control, prevention and management for infectious 

diseases in hospital environments. The unique user interaction is intended to 

encourage use by patients, staff, and visitors to reduce hospital infection rates. 

The experience gained during my time at BU and my industrial placement at 

Hi-Tech Design Ltd, a specialist in the design of injection moulded products 

from concept through to production, has been a great aid throughout the 

conceptual and detailed design of the SAFETouch product.

Islamic Architecture 

A range of unique garments taken from Islamic architecture created through 

textile manipulation influenced by geometry and the archways, ceilings and 

structures of mosques from around the Islamic world. The richness of the bright 

and colourful palette evolved from the buildings seen in stark natural light, 

brings a contemporary edge throughout the collection. Fabrics are a diverse mix 

of crisp paper Tyvek, sleek leathers and heavyweight felts that will hold shape, 

and are manipulated to resemble the spiral-like Great Mosque in Sammara.

Industrial Evolution 

The industrial revolution was the inspiration for this smoky, structural 

womenswear collection. A diverse range of fabrics from thick wools to light 

chiffons, lace and mesh are used to recreate the silhouettes of the Victorian 

period with a modern urban twist. The collection combines a range of edgy 

industrial textile prints and metallic embellishment, contrasting the soft colour 

palette of black, charcoal and grey, which exemplifies the foggy atmosphere of 

the late 19th century. 

Whimsy Recall 

Open a window into a mind washed with echoes of literature from Lewis Caroll’s 

legendary story, reflecting magical moments experienced when illustrating 

images in the mind, in a world free from negativity. The boundaries between 

reality & fantasy merge bringing a sense of pleasure & humour. The female 

figure becomes a clear silhouette, almost fragile with a delicate approach to the 

vivid colour palette. Performance is luxury, soft & silky, combining fur, satins and 

stretch mesh dusted by illuminating crystals.

Constructivist Concepts 

A conceptual collection heavily influenced by the abstract forms and linear 

quality to be found in Russian Constructivist Art. Structured wools and double 

jersey fabrics are cut and manipulated to give the illusion of angular dimensions 

and depth, with strong lines throughout creating a new body silhouette for the 

strong sensual woman. The strong moody colour story is used to emphasise the 

dramatic lines of this new take and play on geometry and form. 

A La Mode 

A modern, Parisian inspired collection reflecting the elegant yet practical woman 

of this enchanting city. Innovative cutting, relaxed, languid shapes and lavish 

fabrics of silks, velvets, and soft leathers combined with a sophisticated colour 

palette of shades of pink, blue and lilac suggest certain romanticism and refined 

glamour. Draped separates and dresses give a feeling of tranquillity whilst 

maintaining a powerful silhouette. The textile is an individual, modernised 

response to the traditional French pattern – toile de joule, progressed from 

personal photographs of everyday scenarios.

Urban Army Girls 

An autumn/winter womenswear collection, heavily influenced by 1950s land 

army, placed in a futuristic world broken apart by war and violence in 2020. This 

collection is a combination of separates and patchworked garments, with a range 

of textile printed images inspired by war propaganda posters. The fabrics are a 

mix of warm floral cottons, suiting, tweeds and wool in deep winter colours of 

greys and browns with accent colours of reds, purples and blues. 

Blurred Boundaries 

With this range my original idea was to evoke an ethereal quality and create a 

collection that was very feminine with a natural sophistication, whilst developing 

interesting silhouettes and textures. Seeking a balance between the organic and 

urban civilization: fabrics are Duchess Satin, Silk Satin, Gold Luxe and Fish 

Leather, the colour palette soft creams & golds with dark tinges achieved by dip 

dying and embellishment. 

The story of a girl at one with nature, engulfed by the forest…blurred boundaries 

between man and nature.

Cocoon 

This autumn/winter 2011 range is based on the textures, comfort and 

protectiveness of animals’ nests, with interesting and unusual textural fabrics 

such as wool, shearling, neoprene and raffia to compliment the soft feminine 

simple relaxed shapes. Earthy natural shades of creams and grey empathise the 

organic theme with surface interest in the textural bonded fabric and knitted 

raffia fabrication. The range is brought together with hand worked raffia 

accessories embellished with crystals. 

Linear Symphony 

Inspired by architect and interior designer Zaha Hadid; her use of organic 

shapes, interweaving structures and use of ‘natural lines’ is the core element in 

this collection. 

The range is feminine, sophisticated and has ‘fluid elements’ that give an 

effortless look, despite its architectural inspiration. Fabrics are silk organza, felt, 

cotton sateen and light jersey, chosen for contrast in weights. The predominately 

white colour palette is accented by black, brown and bright turquoise; the 

collection also plays with layering, dip dying and minimalistic prints.

Structure & Silhouette 

An architectural collection using a range of shine, sheen and matt leathers to 

emphasise the use of structural layers. I have based my collection on geometrics 

and straight lines; while avoiding using a geometric print or pattern, contrast 

colours schemes magnify the effect of the pieces and emphasise the geometry. 

The stark opposing black, white and sky blue layers serve to exaggerate areas 

of the body form and create a strong silhouette. 

Rock Sheik 

Nature combines and collides with the urban rocker, creating a mix of natural 

prints taken from National Geographic images of the earth and modern edgy 

materials. Fabric manipulation is cloned from traditional smocking, and distorts 

the aerial photographic images. The colour palette is monotone with dark tints of 

red and blue and the edgy fabric story includes jersey, denim and sonic fabric 

woven with recycled cassette tape. Metallic accessories and oversized detailing 

emphasise and extend the urban edge.

Transformed Dimensions 

Fascinated by the structural shapes of art pottery, I wanted to transform them 

into soft, draped garments by using fabrics such as silk, jersey and mesh. Working 

solely with flat geometric pattern pieces I used a half-size stand to achieve my 

innovative shapes. The range of dresses and separates are in a moody subtle 

colour palette of nudes and grey, and aimed towards the quirky, upper-market 

individual high street stores such as All Saints and Urban Outfitters. 

Storm Troopers 

An autumn/winter menswear urban, but classy collection for 2011. The mood and 

colour story of this range was evoked by a rainy summer’s day, illuminated by a 

sudden flash of lighting. Fabrication is diverse, with open knitwear contrasting 

with coated denim, jersey and neoprene; chunky metallic embellishment inspired 

by armour is achieved by using parts of recycled coke cans in a range of innovative 

ways. Soft oversized hand knits contrast with the slim silhouette of skintight jeans 

& fitted leggings taken from traditional long johns.

Anyone For Tea? 

A fresh take on traditional British tea time for autumn/winter, with delicate lace, 

silks and floral designs fused with images from Japanese ‘Fruits’ incorporating 

layers and volume. The oversized hand drawn print combines teacups, flowers 

and clocks; hand dyed silks, lace and brocades in subtle creams, beige and 

peaches with a hint of green, pink and blue as found on traditional floral teacup 

designs. The garments are trimmed with bows and vintage brooches to add to 

the traditional/ modern quirky ‘Fruits’ look. 

Cutting Edge 

A sexy feminine tailored collection inspired by eighties and nineties fashion and 

the female form, in cotton sateen, jersey, power-net, sequinned jersey and 

Venetian wool. Shoulders are accentuated by pads, seaming and latch-hooking, 

using unusual wools. Inset pieces and exaggerated panels are used in tight fitting 

garments, to enhance the natural body form, in conjunction with tailored tapered 

jackets and skirts. Playful nods to the work of Thierry Mugler and Jean Paul 

Gaultier include underwear and stockings cut as one piece bodysuits.

Zero: The New Eco Perfume

Course As the gaming Leader market evolves, the number of gamers rises and peripheral sales 

go up, which produces wasted plastic and paper. Environmental awareness in 

the gaming market is apparent but the action taken is not. An alternative way to 

package peripherals should be implemented. Sustainability is consistently in 

high demand so my major project considers a full life-cycle approach that can 

provide a sustainable method of packaging. The future of design sits with the 

future of sustainability. 

“Stinky Poos” Nappies: A Sustainable 

Hemp Solution 

We continue to stink up the planet on behalf of our children with ‘disposable 

nappies’ which take hundreds of years to decay. From the paper used in the 

packaging and manufacture to the water-absorbing gel they contain, all end up 

in landfill. As a designer I am committed to sustainable design and cradle-tocradle 

concepts. My major project therefore proposes biodegradable hemp as 

an alternative for the manufacture and packaging of a new era of truly 

disposable nappies.

Local But National: A Sustainable 

Snack Concept 


Course At present, Leader the snack industry promotes the global trade of processed, high 

mileage food products that have negative social and environmental impacts. To 

boost the local economy, my major project focuses on an alternative sustainable, 

ethical business model to encourage community resilience. The entire supply 

chain, from material sourcing, energy usage, manufacturing and distribution to 

material disposal has been carefully considered using a cradle-to-cradle and 

BioRegional ‘One Planet Living’ approach within a 20 mile radius. 

‘Canopy’ – UK-Based Luxury Yurt Holidays 

The travel and tourism industry is contributing to global warming, especially 

with the high number of flights taken everyday. My major project focuses on an 

alternative UK-based holiday option, which offers luxury Yurt camping. It is 

aimed at the type of travellers who usually look abroad for adventure, cultural 

fulfillment and comfort, and who would not usually consider a UK holiday. This 

holiday experience is wholly based on re-connecting with the environment, 

nature and people, whilst offering a high level of comfort, thus reducing flights.

and integration of sustainable

principle of this Research Centre. 

Issues of tribology (friction, wear 

and lubrication) are studied to help 

understand their influence on product 

durability and energy consumption. 

The activities of this theme include: 

Tribology & Environmental Design, 

Ceramics Tribology, Sustainable 

Design, and Lean Manufacturing. 

The Centre has extensive 

experimental facilities to 

assess wear mechanisms of 

rolling and sliding contacts. 

This includes a rotary tribometer, 

a micro-friction machine and a 

scanning surface microscope. 

We have formed strong partnerships 

with multinational companies such 

as SKF (Netherlands), Oakland Ridge 

National Laboratories (USA), Royal 

National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), 

Energetix, Smith & Nephew plc,

This group was formed two years 

ago and has rapidly developed into 

a vibrant research community. The 

Group brings together researchers 

in clinical and health psychology, 

cognition and neuroscience, 

developmental psychology and 

education, information and 

communications technology, and 

environmental psychology. 

Although we are still growing and 

changing, there are four research 

themes which currently encapsulate

taught intensively, usually 

over 4.5 days, with assessment 

normally taking place 5-6 weeks 

after the delivery of the unit. 

MA Product Design Management 

This course has been designed to give 

an understanding of the key issues 

involved in modern product design 

management. A key part in providing 

the understanding of sustainability 

issues as well as relevant business 

models for competitive product 

development. The subject area 

covers product development at both 

ends – from initial brief and research, 

through to manufacture. This course 

will appeal to design organisations 

as well as engineering employers 

for the advancement of candidates 

holding a first degree, or equivalent 

qualification, in a design related field. 

MSc Design Engineering 

This is a course for graduate 

designers and/or engineers who wish 

to gain the internationally recognised 

title of Chartered Engineer (CEng). 

It is generally recognised that 

professionals holding CEng status 

benefit from significantly improved 

careers prospects than their peers. 

The course is primarily targeted at 

design engineering or product design 

graduates who have an appropriate 

Incorporated Engineer (IEng) 

accredited degree or equivalent and 

is accredited by the Institution of 

Engineering Designers. The course 

will provide the candidate with the 

ability to function in a professional 

engineering environment, using 

modern methods and tools. 

MSc Engineering Design Innovation

achieve the academic element for

The aim of this course is to develop 

comprehensive knowledge and

MSc Engineering Project 

Management 

In recent years there have been 

significant developments in the 

philosophies, methods and tools for 

planning and executing projects. 

These developments are particularly 

important to industries engaged in 

developing new products, systems 

or capabilities. This course is 

designed to provide industry with 

personnel who understand and can 

employ management and technical 

tools, and are able to spearhead 

and manage the development 

of new products and projects 

appropriate for the technological 

industries. This course will be of 

particular relevance to Knowledge 

Transfer Partnership Associates 

engaged in the design, engineering 

and manufacturing sectors. 

MSc Product Design 

The course is a multidisciplinary 

design programme which enables 

graduates to enhance their technical 

knowledge and to allow them to 

design and develop commercial 

products to an advanced level. It 

provides industry with personnel 

who understand and can conduct 

product design using cutting 

edge analysis methods as well as 

employing business and commercial 

expertise for use in a competitive 

environment. Graduates from this 

course will also be able to spearhead 

and manage projects appropriate 

for the design and manufacture 

industries. There will be a practical 

element to a number of the units 

and to the masters project. 

MSc Sustainable Product Design 

Awareness, understanding 

and integration of sustainable 

development issues within the 

design process are the underlying 

issues of this course. Meeting the 

needs of the present generation, 

without compromising the ability of 

future generations to meet their own 

needs is the challenge for designers. 

Sustainable development addresses 

issues that include economic growth 

and employment, social progress for 

all, protection of the environment 

and prudent use of natural 

resources. This is a complex and 

multidisciplinary subject, therefore 

advanced techniques are embraced to 

facilitate and communicate relevant 

case studies throughout the units.
