Dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Design</strong>, Engineering & Computing<br />

<strong>Welcome</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>18th</strong> <strong>annual</strong><br />

<strong>Festival</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Design</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Innov<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong><br />

This year’s <strong>Festival</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Design</strong> & <strong>Innov<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> concept was designed by<br />

Product <strong>Design</strong> student Ryan Spackman<br />

The cre<strong>at</strong>ivity, inventiveness <strong>and</strong> freedom <strong>of</strong><br />

thought <strong>of</strong> our young people are some <strong>of</strong> our<br />

country’s gre<strong>at</strong>est assets <strong>and</strong> have always<br />

underpinned <strong>the</strong> UK’s economic success.<br />

The opportunity <strong>to</strong> try out new ideas <strong>and</strong><br />

cre<strong>at</strong>e innov<strong>at</strong>ive new designs is vital <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

future success <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK economy which<br />

relies on innov<strong>at</strong>ion. The successful<br />

exploit<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> new ideas <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> fostering<br />

<strong>of</strong> new <strong>and</strong> emerging talent are absolutely<br />

essential <strong>to</strong> safeguard <strong>and</strong> deliver<br />

high-quality jobs, successful businesses,<br />

better products <strong>and</strong> services for<br />

consumers, <strong>and</strong> new, more<br />

environmentally friendly processes.<br />

The <strong>Festival</strong> is where Higher Educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

meets industry <strong>and</strong> commerce, providing a<br />

showcase for our students’ skills in design<br />

<strong>and</strong> innov<strong>at</strong>ion. We take pride in <strong>the</strong> quality<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> project work <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ability <strong>of</strong> our<br />

students <strong>to</strong> employ <strong>the</strong> l<strong>at</strong>est technology in<br />

<strong>the</strong> design <strong>of</strong> solutions <strong>to</strong> real problems. In<br />

fact many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> projects in this brochure are<br />

<strong>the</strong> direct result <strong>of</strong> industrial collabor<strong>at</strong>ion, a<br />

successful placement year or are linked <strong>to</strong><br />

one <strong>of</strong> our research centres.<br />

Our design philosophy is based on holistic<br />

design, encompassing market need,<br />

function, engineering, style <strong>and</strong> aes<strong>the</strong>tics.<br />

The projects described in this brochure<br />

embrace this concept <strong>and</strong> if you <strong>at</strong>tend <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Festival</strong>, I hope you find time <strong>to</strong> talk <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

students about <strong>the</strong>ir work <strong>and</strong> find out first<br />

h<strong>and</strong> about <strong>the</strong> research <strong>and</strong> design effort<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have expended.<br />

On behalf <strong>of</strong> our students <strong>and</strong> staff, I would<br />

like <strong>to</strong> take this opportunity <strong>to</strong> thank<br />

everyone who has sponsored <strong>and</strong> supported<br />

our students in <strong>the</strong>ir project work.<br />

Quickstart<br />

The first <strong>of</strong> wh<strong>at</strong> I hope <strong>to</strong> be a range <strong>of</strong> au<strong>to</strong>motive repair products, Quickstart<br />

is <strong>the</strong> first portable jump starter with an on-site powering mechanism. Unlike<br />

most one-shot portable jump starters, Quickstart has <strong>the</strong> means <strong>to</strong> be powered<br />

on <strong>the</strong> move, <strong>at</strong> home or on loc<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Being part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> BSc (Hons) in Computer Aided Product <strong>Design</strong> has allowed<br />

me <strong>to</strong> explore my passion in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> design. I love CAD <strong>and</strong> thanks <strong>to</strong> my<br />

time here, I finally can pursue a career in my dream job as a CAD designer.<br />

Vertical Assisted Bicycle Rack (VertiBrak)<br />

The VertiBrak is designed <strong>to</strong> assist in <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>rage <strong>and</strong> security <strong>of</strong> a bicycle in<br />

confined spaces. It utilises vertical space <strong>to</strong> reduce <strong>the</strong> size <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>rage footprint.<br />

Its unique design integr<strong>at</strong>es a counter-weight system th<strong>at</strong> is contained within<br />

The Commuter Carriage<br />

The Commuter Carriage is a train se<strong>at</strong>ing system th<strong>at</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers normal se<strong>at</strong>ing in<br />

<strong>of</strong>f-peak hours. In peak hours, <strong>the</strong> se<strong>at</strong> schem<strong>at</strong>ics can be changed <strong>to</strong><br />

accommod<strong>at</strong>e more passengers in a structured way. The driver anticip<strong>at</strong>es<br />

congested periods <strong>and</strong> through an au<strong>to</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ed system <strong>the</strong> se<strong>at</strong>s are lowered<br />

<strong>and</strong> six people can st<strong>and</strong> where four could sit.<br />

I enjoyed my placement role as an au<strong>to</strong>motive packaging designer <strong>and</strong> I look<br />

forward <strong>to</strong> getting more <strong>of</strong> my designs manufactured in industry.<br />

Fluid: Hydraulically Oper<strong>at</strong>ed Mountain Bike<br />

Gear Shifting System<br />

This product aims <strong>to</strong> allevi<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> problems with existing cable-driven derailleur<br />

systems such as corrosion, clogging, cable stretch <strong>and</strong> regular maintenance, by<br />

utilising a closed hydraulic system.<br />

During my placement with Microlights Ltd, I designed light fittings for retail<br />

environments, which helped me <strong>to</strong> advance my knowledge <strong>of</strong> design, processing<br />

<strong>and</strong> manufacturing methods.<br />

Au<strong>to</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ic Plant Sprinkler<br />

This product is an au<strong>to</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ic self-sufficient plant w<strong>at</strong>ering feeder <strong>and</strong> sprinkler<br />

th<strong>at</strong> w<strong>at</strong>ers plants without <strong>the</strong> need for constant human interaction. It works with<br />

both indoor <strong>and</strong> outdoor pot plants <strong>and</strong> shrubs, <strong>and</strong> delivers a pre-programmed<br />

amount <strong>of</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>to</strong> prevent under- or over-w<strong>at</strong>ering.<br />

The product can be used <strong>to</strong> keep plants alive <strong>and</strong> thriving even while <strong>the</strong><br />

household is away on holiday.<br />

My time <strong>at</strong> Bournemouth University has enabled me <strong>to</strong> develop personally, <strong>and</strong> as<br />

The W<strong>and</strong>erer<br />

The W<strong>and</strong>erer is a bicycle cargo trailer for use in <strong>of</strong>f-road areas. The trailer<br />

provides a more convenient method <strong>of</strong> transporting camping equipment <strong>and</strong><br />

includes a camping bed for extra comfort.<br />

Studying <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong> has been challenging <strong>and</strong> extremely rewarding. The University<br />

gave me <strong>the</strong> chance <strong>to</strong> learn <strong>and</strong> develop skills in design disciplines <strong>and</strong> many<br />

different s<strong>of</strong>tware packages. The knowledge I’ve gained from <strong>the</strong> course has<br />

been an invaluable stepping s<strong>to</strong>ne for a future career in <strong>the</strong> design industry.<br />

Splinter Mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle Helmet<br />

The Splinter Helmet is a novel concept providing quick & safe helmet removal<br />

following an accident.<br />

Modern helmets pose significant problems for paramedics, being both difficult &<br />

time consuming <strong>to</strong> remove from accident victims <strong>and</strong> delaying <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> potentially<br />

life-saving tre<strong>at</strong>ment. The Splinter Helmet <strong>of</strong>fers an obvious, easy-<strong>to</strong>-use solution <strong>to</strong><br />

this problem. Removing <strong>the</strong> slide clips unlocks <strong>the</strong> interior <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> helmet, allowing it<br />

<strong>to</strong> slide apart. This makes removing <strong>the</strong> helmet a much simpler process, saving vital<br />

seconds without compromising on <strong>the</strong> safety fe<strong>at</strong>ures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> helmet itself.<br />

Studying <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong> taught me awareness in design <strong>and</strong> developed my ethos for<br />

designing for purpose.<br />

Bournemouth University has really cemented my desire <strong>to</strong> become a successful<br />

<strong>and</strong> respected product designer, with aspir<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> a long career.<br />

Post-Ejection Hide<br />

Fighter jet pilots have an inefficient way <strong>of</strong> camouflaging <strong>the</strong>mselves after ejection<br />

in emergency situ<strong>at</strong>ions. Working in conjunction with <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>at</strong> RAF Lyneham, my<br />

product effectively camouflages a single pilot while allowing enough room for basic<br />

survival manoeuvres, <strong>and</strong> is compact enough <strong>to</strong> fit underne<strong>at</strong>h any ejection se<strong>at</strong>.<br />

My time spent <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong> Defence has allowed me <strong>to</strong> develop<br />

commercial, financial <strong>and</strong> project management skills as well as giving me an<br />

excellent insight in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> defence sec<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

H 2 Ouse - W<strong>at</strong>er Conserv<strong>at</strong>ion Learning Aid<br />

Fresh w<strong>at</strong>er is unnecessarily wasted within households. H 2 Ouse is a w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

conserv<strong>at</strong>ion learning aid designed specifically for use in schools by Key Stage<br />

2 pupils aged 7-11 years.<br />

H 2 Ouse cre<strong>at</strong>es awareness <strong>and</strong> educ<strong>at</strong>es pupils in <strong>the</strong> ways in which w<strong>at</strong>er can<br />

be used efficiently by comparing w<strong>at</strong>er consumption in a household. This<br />

encourages children <strong>to</strong> conserve w<strong>at</strong>er from a young age, which in turn<br />

preserves <strong>and</strong> prolongs our depleting n<strong>at</strong>ural fresh w<strong>at</strong>er supplies.<br />

The Reflex System<br />

The Reflex System is designed <strong>to</strong> integr<strong>at</strong>e with current lifebo<strong>at</strong> equipment th<strong>at</strong><br />

deals with spinal injuries. It <strong>of</strong>fers a complete rescue system from <strong>the</strong> moment th<strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> lifebo<strong>at</strong> arrives on <strong>the</strong> scene until <strong>the</strong> casualty is diagnosed in hospital. It<br />

comprises two main components: a spineboard with adjustable buoyancy <strong>and</strong> a<br />

basket <strong>to</strong> remove <strong>the</strong> casualty <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> board from <strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er.<br />

<strong>BU</strong> <strong>and</strong> my placement in <strong>the</strong> aerospace industry <strong>of</strong>fered me invaluable experiences<br />

which have helped me improve as a rounded <strong>and</strong> confident designer.<br />

Strength & Conditioning Sled<br />

The sled is something th<strong>at</strong> I have wanted <strong>to</strong> redesign for indoor use; it is a<br />

piece <strong>of</strong> equipment th<strong>at</strong> can help sports people improve <strong>the</strong>ir strength <strong>and</strong><br />

conditioning so th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y can perform <strong>to</strong> a high st<strong>and</strong>ard.<br />

My time <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong> has reinforced my interest in advanced technologies, <strong>and</strong><br />

given me skills th<strong>at</strong> I believe have prepared me for a future career in design<br />

<strong>and</strong> engineering.<br />

Au<strong>to</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ic Work Piece Positioning System<br />

in x, y, Ѳ Axis<br />

Positioning a work piece ready for machining takes time <strong>and</strong> any mistakes<br />

made can cost engineering companies time <strong>and</strong> money.<br />

This system will au<strong>to</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ically position <strong>the</strong> work piece placed on <strong>the</strong> table<br />

system. This will reduce setting up time <strong>and</strong> reduce mistakes made, <strong>the</strong>reby<br />

reducing costs <strong>and</strong> increasing pr<strong>of</strong>its.<br />

Studying <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong> has given me focus <strong>and</strong> widened my horizons for <strong>the</strong> future.<br />

Outdoor Clo<strong>the</strong>s Dryer with Au<strong>to</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

Rain Protection<br />

The dryer tackles <strong>the</strong> common problem <strong>of</strong> clo<strong>the</strong>s getting soaked on <strong>the</strong> washing<br />

line when <strong>the</strong>re is no-one around <strong>to</strong> bring <strong>the</strong>m in when it starts raining. This<br />

clo<strong>the</strong>s in<strong>to</strong> a w<strong>at</strong>erpro<strong>of</strong> cover, re-opening when <strong>the</strong> rain has s<strong>to</strong>pped.<br />

Studying <strong>at</strong> Bournemouth University, <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r with a valuable work placement,<br />

The Glider Belly Dolly<br />

The Glider Belly Dolly is a cradle with two side-by-side wheels supporting <strong>the</strong><br />

Enduro Bike Light<br />

In endurance mountain bike racing <strong>the</strong>re has always been a trade-<strong>of</strong>f between<br />

During my time studying <strong>at</strong> Bournemouth University <strong>and</strong> working <strong>at</strong> my placement<br />

I have developed a fur<strong>the</strong>r passion for <strong>Design</strong> Engineering <strong>and</strong> all its challenges.<br />

Au<strong>to</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ed RV Levelling System<br />

The Au<strong>to</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ed Recre<strong>at</strong>ional Vehicle (RV) Levelling System design incorpor<strong>at</strong>es<br />

an innov<strong>at</strong>ive way in which <strong>to</strong> lift <strong>the</strong> chassis <strong>of</strong> an RV <strong>to</strong> a level plane. Instead<br />

<strong>of</strong> using conventional hydraulics jacks th<strong>at</strong> are prone <strong>to</strong> failure, <strong>the</strong> new design<br />

uses a composite m<strong>at</strong>erial <strong>of</strong> Kevlar infused in rubber <strong>and</strong> a metal casing <strong>to</strong> lift<br />

<strong>the</strong> vehicle.<br />

My time <strong>at</strong> Bournemouth University has facilit<strong>at</strong>ed my fur<strong>the</strong>r study in<br />

Au<strong>to</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ic Collapsible Crutch<br />

People use crutches for lower-limb injuries <strong>to</strong> decrease discomfort <strong>and</strong> assist<br />

Bicycle Au<strong>to</strong>-Changer<br />

The au<strong>to</strong>-changer is designed <strong>to</strong> allow bikes <strong>to</strong> be ridden without <strong>the</strong> need for<br />

changing gear for <strong>the</strong>m au<strong>to</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ically.<br />

During my time <strong>at</strong> Bournemouth University I have developed many key skills<br />

th<strong>at</strong> I will take with me <strong>to</strong> aid my career.<br />

Earthquake Logistics <strong>and</strong> Relief Vehicle<br />

In disaster-prone regions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, it is evident th<strong>at</strong> rapid <strong>and</strong> efficient<br />

response <strong>to</strong> earthquakes is a growing issue. My vehicle is predominantly<br />

It addresses issues <strong>of</strong> panic <strong>and</strong> fear through its raw aes<strong>the</strong>tics <strong>and</strong> ethos <strong>of</strong><br />

Brewery Sk<strong>at</strong>e Park Dorchester<br />

As soon as I saw Dorchester’s brewery, with its beautiful architecture <strong>and</strong> space,<br />

I knew wh<strong>at</strong> I wanted <strong>to</strong> do for my final project. Having had an interest in urban<br />

sport for a long time I had <strong>the</strong> chance <strong>to</strong> design my very own sk<strong>at</strong>e park. It would<br />

not be ‘just ano<strong>the</strong>r sk<strong>at</strong>e park’ but a place where you can learn <strong>to</strong> ride/sk<strong>at</strong>e<br />

board, shops with ‘try before you buy’ <strong>and</strong> a wonderful comfortable cafe for<br />

visi<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> w<strong>at</strong>ch <strong>and</strong> relax.<br />

Bella Fuga – Eco-Friendly Resort<br />

Bella Fuga means <strong>the</strong> ‘beautiful escape’ in Italian. The resort aims <strong>to</strong> reduce<br />

CO 2 emissions by changing Hong Kong’s typical flying holiday habits in<strong>to</strong> a<br />

distinctive holiday experience without <strong>the</strong> need for flying. The project<br />

transforms <strong>the</strong> existing female prison in Chi Ma Wan, Hong Kong, in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

city’s first luxury eco-friendly resort, encouraging visi<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> enjoy <strong>and</strong><br />

St Nicholas Shelter<br />

Homelessness is a growing problem in <strong>the</strong> UK. My concept provides an<br />

innov<strong>at</strong>ive service for <strong>the</strong> homeless within <strong>the</strong> London Borough <strong>of</strong> Sut<strong>to</strong>n.<br />

Thoughtfully designed, it concentr<strong>at</strong>es on relief <strong>and</strong> stability <strong>to</strong> address <strong>the</strong><br />

issue. Relief <strong>of</strong> street homelessness is tackled with mobile shelters th<strong>at</strong> deal<br />

directly with <strong>the</strong> practicalities <strong>of</strong> living on <strong>the</strong> street. Stability is provided by a<br />

welcoming building th<strong>at</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>es a sense <strong>of</strong> community, facilit<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>the</strong><br />

rehabilit<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> residents <strong>to</strong>ward independent living.<br />

Regener<strong>at</strong>e, Revive<br />

The project aims <strong>to</strong> take a proactive approach <strong>to</strong> reducing stress in <strong>the</strong><br />

workplace. It takes an unhealthy <strong>of</strong>fice environment <strong>and</strong> injects different<br />

facilities <strong>to</strong> encourage employees <strong>to</strong> actively improve <strong>the</strong>ir health <strong>and</strong> wellbeing.<br />

Whilst studying <strong>at</strong> Bournemouth University I have learned a wide range <strong>of</strong> skills<br />

Future X-treme<br />

Extreme sports are a physically <strong>and</strong> mentally challenging activity which<br />

sports centre which enables <strong>the</strong> community <strong>to</strong> get involved with extreme sports<br />

in a safe <strong>and</strong> controlled environment. Providing such a cre<strong>at</strong>ive sport with <strong>the</strong><br />

environment it needs removes <strong>the</strong> typical bad ‘sk<strong>at</strong>e’ br<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />

My time <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong> has taught me <strong>the</strong> fundamental elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> design industry,<br />

with my placement year working for Masterpieces putting <strong>the</strong>se skills in<strong>to</strong> practice.<br />

Filmertainment<br />

My project is an art house cinema th<strong>at</strong> includes luxurious se<strong>at</strong>ing for a small<br />

number <strong>of</strong> users designed around comfort. A small café including specially<br />

designed pods has been provided for refreshments. I wanted <strong>to</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>e a space<br />

th<strong>at</strong> allows <strong>the</strong> user <strong>to</strong> experience <strong>the</strong> magic <strong>of</strong> film ra<strong>the</strong>r than worry about<br />

making <strong>the</strong>mselves comfortable.<br />

My placement <strong>at</strong> <strong>Design</strong> id, Kent, allowed me <strong>to</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r my knowledge <strong>and</strong> put<br />

in<strong>to</strong> practice <strong>the</strong> skills th<strong>at</strong> I have learnt <strong>at</strong> Bournemouth University.<br />

Gre<strong>at</strong>er Prospects Job Centre<br />

Unemployment is prominent in Swindon, where more than one in every ten people<br />

is unemployed. Responding <strong>to</strong> this problem, I redesigned <strong>the</strong> former Gre<strong>at</strong> Western<br />

Railway P<strong>at</strong>tern S<strong>to</strong>re <strong>and</strong> current restaurant in<strong>to</strong> an innov<strong>at</strong>ive Job Centre. My<br />

philosophy was <strong>to</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>e a dynamic labour market by equipping <strong>the</strong> unemployed<br />

with <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>ols needed <strong>to</strong> enter <strong>the</strong> job market.<br />

My placement <strong>and</strong> time <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong> fuelled my cre<strong>at</strong>ivity <strong>to</strong> gener<strong>at</strong>e this idea <strong>and</strong><br />

endowed me with <strong>the</strong> skills with which <strong>to</strong> complete it.<br />

The Blot Gallery<br />

Graffiti art has eventually been recognised by <strong>the</strong> art world, yet graffiti artists<br />

still struggle <strong>to</strong> get <strong>the</strong>ir work displayed. Using <strong>the</strong> UK’s graffiti capital, Bris<strong>to</strong>l,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> loc<strong>at</strong>ion, my graffiti gallery concept not only exhibits exciting, original art<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> public, it also provides facilities for passion<strong>at</strong>e graffiti artists <strong>to</strong> develop<br />

<strong>and</strong> practise <strong>the</strong>ir skills in a safe, socially stimul<strong>at</strong>ing environment. The<br />

res<strong>to</strong>r<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> a currently derelict, listed building will be appreci<strong>at</strong>ed by a<br />

community th<strong>at</strong> embraces Bris<strong>to</strong>l’s graffiti culture.<br />

Mighty Oaks Renov<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

While on my final year on <strong>the</strong> Interior <strong>Design</strong> Course I have been working <strong>at</strong> a<br />

secondary school with students with behavioural problems. In my design project I<br />

am using <strong>the</strong> skills I have acquired during my placement year <strong>and</strong> integr<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>the</strong>m<br />

Weymouth & Portl<strong>and</strong> Olympic Sailing<br />

Training Centre<br />

Weymouth & Portl<strong>and</strong> harbour will host <strong>the</strong> 2012 Olympic sailing. I have designed<br />

a training centre th<strong>at</strong> accommod<strong>at</strong>es team GB’s training needs. The centre allows<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>at</strong>hletes <strong>to</strong> have a priv<strong>at</strong>e facility in which <strong>the</strong>y can train, e<strong>at</strong> <strong>and</strong> sleep for any<br />

length <strong>of</strong> time within an <strong>at</strong>mosphere th<strong>at</strong> reinforces <strong>the</strong> motiv<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>to</strong> win.<br />

I decided <strong>to</strong> pursue a project in this field following my placement <strong>at</strong> a luxury<br />

yacht designer, where I improved my computer <strong>and</strong> graphic skills <strong>and</strong> sharpened<br />

my eye for design.<br />

The Maltings Hotel<br />

My aim is <strong>to</strong> res<strong>to</strong>re a currently neglected <strong>and</strong> ab<strong>and</strong>oned building. The building<br />

(a former Maltings) occupies a prime site close <strong>to</strong> a main-line commuter belt railway<br />

st<strong>at</strong>ion. A building such as this would make a magnificent boutique hotel giving it<br />

back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>wn as an art form itself. Following <strong>the</strong> simplistic principles <strong>of</strong><br />

architecture, form follows function.<br />

A young designer with enthusiasm <strong>and</strong> passion for cre<strong>at</strong>ing an aes<strong>the</strong>tically<br />

pleasing design, I have been inspired by <strong>the</strong> architectural designs I have seen<br />

during my placement in Miami, which has also opened <strong>the</strong> door <strong>to</strong> my future career.<br />

Look BEYOUnd<br />

I am designing a centre th<strong>at</strong> promotes a positive body image among<br />

adolescent girls. Somewhere for <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> take a journey, learn, interact,<br />

play <strong>and</strong> be <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

My time <strong>at</strong> Bournemouth University has been an enlightening one. I have taken<br />

a journey myself <strong>and</strong> feel <strong>the</strong> knowledge I have gained <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> lessons I have<br />

learnt have helped prepare me <strong>to</strong> begin a new chapter in my life; I couldn’t be<br />

more ready.<br />

Team Building Activity Centre<br />

1-11 Sidwell Street’s prominent position in Exeter City Centre is <strong>the</strong> ideal loc<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

for <strong>the</strong> only Indoor Activity Centre for Team Building in <strong>the</strong> South West. The large<br />

volume <strong>of</strong> space has given me <strong>the</strong> flexibility <strong>to</strong> fulfil <strong>the</strong> varying requirements <strong>of</strong><br />

each activity, whilst <strong>the</strong> design allows <strong>the</strong> teams <strong>to</strong> experience a journey through<br />

movement around <strong>the</strong> building.<br />

My placement <strong>at</strong> MCM Architecture provided me with invaluable experience <strong>and</strong><br />

Wil<strong>to</strong>n’s Music Hall<br />

Wil<strong>to</strong>n’s Music Hall is a beautifully faded gr<strong>and</strong> old music hall th<strong>at</strong> has survived<br />

for over 150 years. I plan <strong>to</strong> transform this building in<strong>to</strong> a cre<strong>at</strong>ive hub for <strong>the</strong><br />

performing arts, encouraging <strong>the</strong> local community <strong>to</strong> particip<strong>at</strong>e <strong>and</strong> use <strong>the</strong><br />

centre as a cre<strong>at</strong>ive outlet <strong>and</strong> as a place <strong>to</strong> hone <strong>and</strong> develop <strong>the</strong>ir skills as well<br />

as learning new ones.<br />

My tu<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>at</strong> Bournemouth University have been invaluable during my time here<br />

<strong>and</strong> have encouraged me in all aspects <strong>of</strong> design.<br />

My final year project involved developing a three dimensional Ambisonic sound<br />

system which can be synchronised <strong>to</strong> a moving image. This was used in a<br />

compar<strong>at</strong>ive study <strong>to</strong> compare its functionality <strong>to</strong> 5.1 Surround Sound.<br />

The test experiment I designed set out <strong>to</strong> test <strong>the</strong> ability <strong>of</strong> various people from<br />

using 5.1 Surround Sound while w<strong>at</strong>ching a video which played across 4 moni<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

The intention was <strong>to</strong> find out whe<strong>the</strong>r subjects would tend <strong>to</strong> draw <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

Snowboard Waxer<br />

My final year project, <strong>the</strong> snowboard waxer, is used <strong>to</strong> melt <strong>and</strong> spread wax<br />

over a snowboard base. The problem with existing products is th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y<br />

require two h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> two slow processes.<br />

The new product s<strong>to</strong>res <strong>and</strong> releases wax, requires one h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> turns two<br />

processes in<strong>to</strong> a quicker single one. A better, more effective product has been<br />

cre<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>at</strong> a competitive price.<br />

This course has shown me <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical <strong>and</strong> practical sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> product<br />

design industry.<br />

where clean w<strong>at</strong>er may not be available. The w<strong>at</strong>er s<strong>to</strong>rage area is removable<br />

so th<strong>at</strong> it can be filled easily from a tap.<br />

My time <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong>, combined with a valuable placement, has given me an amazing<br />

Eco-Compression Bin<br />

My time <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong> has helped me gain valuable skills helping in <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong><br />

my final year project, <strong>the</strong> Eco-Compression Bin. The design is a waste disposal<br />

unit, which has <strong>the</strong> ability <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re <strong>and</strong> crush <strong>the</strong> contents hygienically, in<br />

order <strong>to</strong> maximise <strong>the</strong> available space <strong>and</strong> minimise <strong>the</strong> bulk <strong>of</strong> m<strong>at</strong>erial.<br />

The mechanism used must ensure th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> bin bag does not split in <strong>the</strong><br />

crushing process <strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> waste is simple <strong>and</strong> easy <strong>to</strong> dispose <strong>of</strong>.<br />

PA Banner St<strong>and</strong><br />

My project demonstr<strong>at</strong>es an ability <strong>to</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>e design th<strong>at</strong> is simple but works<br />

both in <strong>the</strong> functionality it <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong> user <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> simplicity <strong>of</strong> its assembly.<br />

I believe it reflects <strong>the</strong> notion th<strong>at</strong> design is about making people’s experiences<br />

easier <strong>and</strong> more enjoyable.<br />

My time <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong> has been a valuable found<strong>at</strong>ion on which <strong>to</strong> explore ideas <strong>and</strong><br />

identify my strengths as a designer, something th<strong>at</strong> enabled me <strong>to</strong> become a<br />

valued part <strong>of</strong> my placement company.<br />

Removable Panniers for Commuters<br />

Studying Product <strong>Design</strong> has shown me <strong>the</strong> impact th<strong>at</strong> gre<strong>at</strong> design has on<br />

<strong>the</strong> world. The majority <strong>of</strong> pannier products on <strong>the</strong> market are permanently<br />

fitted <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> bicycle or require specialist fittings. This product is aimed <strong>at</strong><br />

commuters as a quick, stylish <strong>and</strong> simple altern<strong>at</strong>ive th<strong>at</strong> does not compromise<br />

<strong>the</strong> practicality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bicycle.<br />

The system allows <strong>the</strong> user <strong>to</strong> quickly load <strong>the</strong> individual panniers <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n fix<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> temporary rack. Once <strong>the</strong> user has arrived <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir destin<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

can detach individual compartments or, if <strong>the</strong>y wish, swiftly remove <strong>the</strong> entire<br />

pannier system leaving <strong>the</strong> bicycle in its original condition.<br />

Renewable Energy Teaching Aid<br />

My product aims <strong>to</strong> enforce <strong>the</strong> curriculum teaching renewable energy in<br />

schools, ensuring it becomes a lynchpin <strong>of</strong> a child’s educ<strong>at</strong>ion. It is <strong>to</strong> be used<br />

in early secondary school, where children are getting <strong>to</strong> grips with more<br />

advanced concepts <strong>of</strong> science. It is a modular development th<strong>at</strong> has <strong>the</strong> ability<br />

<strong>to</strong> change as sources <strong>of</strong> energy inevitably will.<br />

My time <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong>, coupled with my industrial placement year, has helped with<br />

my pr<strong>of</strong>essional development <strong>and</strong> inspired <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> eventually starting my<br />

own business.<br />

ToothTime<br />

Dental problems among children are very common <strong>the</strong>se days. ToothTime is an<br />

aid designed <strong>to</strong> teach children good brushing technique <strong>and</strong> routine from a<br />

young age. It has a changeable character display, audio encouragement <strong>and</strong><br />

chart which records users’ brushing activity each week.<br />

During my time <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong> <strong>and</strong> work placement <strong>at</strong> Eurotek Office Furniture I’ve<br />

enjoyed learning <strong>and</strong> developing a broad range <strong>of</strong> design skills, <strong>and</strong> I am<br />

looking forward <strong>to</strong> a career in design.<br />

unfamiliar with DIY. Simply set <strong>the</strong> depth <strong>and</strong> drill perfect holes every time.<br />

Studying <strong>at</strong> <strong>BU</strong> has been a gre<strong>at</strong> experience, <strong>and</strong> not without its<br />

challenges, but thanks <strong>to</strong> amazing support from staff <strong>and</strong> fellow students<br />

I look forward <strong>to</strong> a rewarding <strong>and</strong> successful career in design.<br />

Supermarket Shopping Trolley for <strong>the</strong> Elderly<br />

The elderly account for 12% <strong>of</strong> supermarket cus<strong>to</strong>mers. My design provides <strong>the</strong><br />

Industrial Evolution<br />

The industrial revolution was <strong>the</strong> inspir<strong>at</strong>ion for this smoky, structural<br />

womenswear collection. A diverse range <strong>of</strong> fabrics from thick wools <strong>to</strong> light<br />

chiffons, lace <strong>and</strong> mesh are used <strong>to</strong> recre<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> silhouettes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vic<strong>to</strong>rian<br />

period with a modern urban twist. The collection combines a range <strong>of</strong> edgy<br />

industrial textile prints <strong>and</strong> metallic embellishment, contrasting <strong>the</strong> s<strong>of</strong>t colour<br />

palette <strong>of</strong> black, charcoal <strong>and</strong> grey, which exemplifies <strong>the</strong> foggy <strong>at</strong>mosphere <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> l<strong>at</strong>e 19th century.<br />

Whimsy Recall<br />

Open a window in<strong>to</strong> a mind washed with echoes <strong>of</strong> liter<strong>at</strong>ure from Lewis Caroll’s<br />

legendary s<strong>to</strong>ry, reflecting magical moments experienced when illustr<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

images in <strong>the</strong> mind, in a world free from neg<strong>at</strong>ivity. The boundaries between<br />

reality & fantasy merge bringing a sense <strong>of</strong> pleasure & humour. The female<br />

figure becomes a clear silhouette, almost fragile with a delic<strong>at</strong>e approach <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

vivid colour palette. Performance is luxury, s<strong>of</strong>t & silky, combining fur, s<strong>at</strong>ins <strong>and</strong><br />

stretch mesh dusted by illumin<strong>at</strong>ing crystals.<br />

Constructivist Concepts<br />

A conceptual collection heavily influenced by <strong>the</strong> abstract forms <strong>and</strong> linear<br />

quality <strong>to</strong> be found in Russian Constructivist Art. Structured wools <strong>and</strong> double<br />

jersey fabrics are cut <strong>and</strong> manipul<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>to</strong> give <strong>the</strong> illusion <strong>of</strong> angular dimensions<br />

<strong>and</strong> depth, with strong lines throughout cre<strong>at</strong>ing a new body silhouette for <strong>the</strong><br />

strong sensual woman. The strong moody colour s<strong>to</strong>ry is used <strong>to</strong> emphasise <strong>the</strong><br />

dram<strong>at</strong>ic lines <strong>of</strong> this new take <strong>and</strong> play on geometry <strong>and</strong> form.<br />

A La Mode<br />

A modern, Parisian inspired collection reflecting <strong>the</strong> elegant yet practical woman<br />

<strong>of</strong> this enchanting city. Innov<strong>at</strong>ive cutting, relaxed, languid shapes <strong>and</strong> lavish<br />

fabrics <strong>of</strong> silks, velvets, <strong>and</strong> s<strong>of</strong>t lea<strong>the</strong>rs combined with a sophistic<strong>at</strong>ed colour<br />

palette <strong>of</strong> shades <strong>of</strong> pink, blue <strong>and</strong> lilac suggest certain romanticism <strong>and</strong> refined<br />

glamour. Draped separ<strong>at</strong>es <strong>and</strong> dresses give a feeling <strong>of</strong> tranquillity whilst<br />

maintaining a powerful silhouette. The textile is an individual, modernised<br />

response <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> traditional French p<strong>at</strong>tern – <strong>to</strong>ile de joule, progressed from<br />

personal pho<strong>to</strong>graphs <strong>of</strong> everyday scenarios.<br />

Urban Army Girls<br />

An autumn/winter womenswear collection, heavily influenced by 1950s l<strong>and</strong><br />

army, placed in a futuristic world broken apart by war <strong>and</strong> violence in 2020. This<br />

collection is a combin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> separ<strong>at</strong>es <strong>and</strong> p<strong>at</strong>chworked garments, with a range<br />

<strong>of</strong> textile printed images inspired by war propag<strong>and</strong>a posters. The fabrics are a<br />

mix <strong>of</strong> warm floral cot<strong>to</strong>ns, suiting, tweeds <strong>and</strong> wool in deep winter colours <strong>of</strong><br />

greys <strong>and</strong> browns with accent colours <strong>of</strong> reds, purples <strong>and</strong> blues.<br />

Blurred Boundaries<br />

With this range my original idea was <strong>to</strong> evoke an e<strong>the</strong>real quality <strong>and</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>e a<br />

collection th<strong>at</strong> was very feminine with a n<strong>at</strong>ural sophistic<strong>at</strong>ion, whilst developing<br />

interesting silhouettes <strong>and</strong> textures. Seeking a balance between <strong>the</strong> organic <strong>and</strong><br />

urban civiliz<strong>at</strong>ion: fabrics are Duchess S<strong>at</strong>in, Silk S<strong>at</strong>in, Gold Luxe <strong>and</strong> Fish<br />

Lea<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> colour palette s<strong>of</strong>t creams & golds with dark tinges achieved by dip<br />

dying <strong>and</strong> embellishment.<br />

The s<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> a girl <strong>at</strong> one with n<strong>at</strong>ure, engulfed by <strong>the</strong> forest…blurred boundaries<br />

between man <strong>and</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ure.<br />

Cocoon<br />

This autumn/winter 2011 range is based on <strong>the</strong> textures, comfort <strong>and</strong><br />

protectiveness <strong>of</strong> animals’ nests, with interesting <strong>and</strong> unusual textural fabrics<br />

such as wool, shearling, neoprene <strong>and</strong> raffia <strong>to</strong> compliment <strong>the</strong> s<strong>of</strong>t feminine<br />

simple relaxed shapes. Earthy n<strong>at</strong>ural shades <strong>of</strong> creams <strong>and</strong> grey emp<strong>at</strong>hise <strong>the</strong><br />

organic <strong>the</strong>me with surface interest in <strong>the</strong> textural bonded fabric <strong>and</strong> knitted<br />

raffia fabric<strong>at</strong>ion. The range is brought <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r with h<strong>and</strong> worked raffia<br />

accessories embellished with crystals.<br />

Linear Symphony<br />

Inspired by architect <strong>and</strong> interior designer Zaha Hadid; her use <strong>of</strong> organic<br />

shapes, interweaving structures <strong>and</strong> use <strong>of</strong> ‘n<strong>at</strong>ural lines’ is <strong>the</strong> core element in<br />

this collection.<br />

The range is feminine, sophistic<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>and</strong> has ‘fluid elements’ th<strong>at</strong> give an<br />

effortless look, despite its architectural inspir<strong>at</strong>ion. Fabrics are silk organza, felt,<br />

cot<strong>to</strong>n s<strong>at</strong>een <strong>and</strong> light jersey, chosen for contrast in weights. The predomin<strong>at</strong>ely<br />

white colour palette is accented by black, brown <strong>and</strong> bright turquoise; <strong>the</strong><br />

collection also plays with layering, dip dying <strong>and</strong> minimalistic prints.<br />

Structure & Silhouette<br />

An architectural collection using a range <strong>of</strong> shine, sheen <strong>and</strong> m<strong>at</strong>t lea<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>to</strong><br />

emphasise <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> structural layers. I have based my collection on geometrics<br />

<strong>and</strong> straight lines; while avoiding using a geometric print or p<strong>at</strong>tern, contrast<br />

colours schemes magnify <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pieces <strong>and</strong> emphasise <strong>the</strong> geometry.<br />

The stark opposing black, white <strong>and</strong> sky blue layers serve <strong>to</strong> exagger<strong>at</strong>e areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body form <strong>and</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>e a strong silhouette.<br />

Rock Sheik<br />

N<strong>at</strong>ure combines <strong>and</strong> collides with <strong>the</strong> urban rocker, cre<strong>at</strong>ing a mix <strong>of</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ural<br />

prints taken from N<strong>at</strong>ional Geographic images <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth <strong>and</strong> modern edgy<br />

m<strong>at</strong>erials. Fabric manipul<strong>at</strong>ion is cloned from traditional smocking, <strong>and</strong> dis<strong>to</strong>rts<br />

<strong>the</strong> aerial pho<strong>to</strong>graphic images. The colour palette is mono<strong>to</strong>ne with dark tints <strong>of</strong><br />

red <strong>and</strong> blue <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> edgy fabric s<strong>to</strong>ry includes jersey, denim <strong>and</strong> sonic fabric<br />

woven with recycled cassette tape. Metallic accessories <strong>and</strong> oversized detailing<br />

emphasise <strong>and</strong> extend <strong>the</strong> urban edge.<br />

Transformed Dimensions<br />

Fascin<strong>at</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> structural shapes <strong>of</strong> art pottery, I wanted <strong>to</strong> transform <strong>the</strong>m<br />

in<strong>to</strong> s<strong>of</strong>t, draped garments by using fabrics such as silk, jersey <strong>and</strong> mesh. Working<br />

solely with fl<strong>at</strong> geometric p<strong>at</strong>tern pieces I used a half-size st<strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong> achieve my<br />

innov<strong>at</strong>ive shapes. The range <strong>of</strong> dresses <strong>and</strong> separ<strong>at</strong>es are in a moody subtle<br />

colour palette <strong>of</strong> nudes <strong>and</strong> grey, <strong>and</strong> aimed <strong>to</strong>wards <strong>the</strong> quirky, upper-market<br />

individual high street s<strong>to</strong>res such as All Saints <strong>and</strong> Urban Outfitters.<br />

S<strong>to</strong>rm Troopers<br />

An autumn/winter menswear urban, but classy collection for 2011. The mood <strong>and</strong><br />

colour s<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> this range was evoked by a rainy summer’s day, illumin<strong>at</strong>ed by a<br />

sudden flash <strong>of</strong> lighting. Fabric<strong>at</strong>ion is diverse, with open knitwear contrasting<br />

with co<strong>at</strong>ed denim, jersey <strong>and</strong> neoprene; chunky metallic embellishment inspired<br />

by armour is achieved by using parts <strong>of</strong> recycled coke cans in a range <strong>of</strong> innov<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

ways. S<strong>of</strong>t oversized h<strong>and</strong> knits contrast with <strong>the</strong> slim silhouette <strong>of</strong> skintight jeans<br />

& fitted leggings taken from traditional long johns.<br />

A fresh take on traditional British tea time for autumn/winter, with delic<strong>at</strong>e lace,<br />

Does <strong>the</strong> Xbox 360 Play <strong>the</strong> Environmental<br />

Game? – Sustainable Gaming Future<br />

Melinda W<strong>at</strong>son<br />

Course As <strong>the</strong> gaming Leader market evolves, <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> gamers rises <strong>and</strong> peripheral sales<br />

go up, which produces wasted plastic <strong>and</strong> paper. Environmental awareness in<br />

<strong>the</strong> gaming market is apparent but <strong>the</strong> action taken is not. An altern<strong>at</strong>ive way <strong>to</strong><br />

package peripherals should be implemented. Sustainability is consistently in<br />

high dem<strong>and</strong> so my major project considers a full life-cycle approach th<strong>at</strong> can<br />

provide a sustainable method <strong>of</strong> packaging. The future <strong>of</strong> design sits with <strong>the</strong><br />

future <strong>of</strong> sustainability.<br />

Hemp Solution<br />

We continue <strong>to</strong> stink up <strong>the</strong> planet on behalf <strong>of</strong> our children with ‘disposable<br />

packaging <strong>and</strong> manufacture <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er-absorbing gel <strong>the</strong>y contain, all end up<br />

in l<strong>and</strong>fill. As a designer I am committed <strong>to</strong> sustainable design <strong>and</strong> cradle-<strong>to</strong>cradle<br />

‘Canopy’ – UK-Based Luxury Yurt Holidays<br />

The travel <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong>urism industry is contributing <strong>to</strong> global warming, especially<br />

with <strong>the</strong> high number <strong>of</strong> flights taken everyday. My major project focuses on an<br />

altern<strong>at</strong>ive UK-based holiday option, which <strong>of</strong>fers luxury Yurt camping. It is<br />

aimed <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> travellers who usually look abroad for adventure, cultural<br />

fulfillment <strong>and</strong> comfort, <strong>and</strong> who would not usually consider a UK holiday. This<br />

holiday experience is wholly based on re-connecting with <strong>the</strong> environment,<br />
