Western Ranch and Cow Horse One-Year Certificate • Vermilion Campus Education with Purpose If you want a career in the ranching industry, you’ll love the Western Ranch and Cow Horse certificate program. This unique program combines cattle handling skills, cattle disease recognition and treatment, and horsemanship skills. Many feedlots utilize personnel on horseback for checking pens and moving livestock. Cattle showing signs of illness need to be removed and treated. Students learn to work with their horse to properly separate and move livestock and how to process cattle. With the knowledge and hands-on experience that you’ll gain about equine husbandry and beef production, you’ll be riding tall in the saddle as you work towards an exciting career. Cool Stuff and Program Fun Facts • Your horse is part of your school supplies. Stable it on campus. • Grab a rope and learn to handle cattle safely and efficiently. • Polish your basic farrier skills to give your horse a “trim.” • Organize a top-notch horse industry sale and network with people working in the field. • Take on your classmates and industry riders during the annual Working Cowboy Competition. • Be part of one of the most successful college rodeo clubs in Canada or the Ranch and Feedlot Rider Club. • Lakeland College received the 2008 Award of Distinction of Industry Leadership from the Alberta Farm Animal Care (AFAC) partnership. AFAC promotes responsible, humane animal care within the livestock industry.
