Squirt stands 15 HH and as stout as they come with the prettiest face you will find. Squirt has been
used for 2 months in an 8,000-head feedlot, opening/closing gates, moving cattle and packing a rope.
He is very cowy and will really latch on. He’s got a great turnaround and can get in the ground and stop.
He’s also been used gathering cattle, is good in the arena and gets along great with other horses. Will
make a great heel horse prospect, penner, ranch gelding, and has the right start to go in any direction.
and quiet gelding has been used for ranch work, brandings, ranch roping and at the feedlot. He’s got a good
handle and is ready to take in any direction – team roping, cowhorse or as a solid ranch gelding. Axel is good to
load, haul, shoe, handle and is good with other horses. I’ve had this gelding since he was three years old, have
used him steady since then and he’s matured into a great prospect for someone to go on with. Thanks to
“Ricky” was easy to start and is taking all new experiences with ease. I have used him around
cattle, the roping boxes and even a mounted shooting clinic. He stands 14.1 HH, but is stocky
and has a great stop. Very interesting to work with and ready to go on to whatever you want to
do with him.
15 HH, 1100 lbs. RJ is a real nice, quiet gelding that is easy to get along with and nice to be
around. He has seen and done a little bit of everything, is well broke and has a lot of cow
sense. He may be too much horse for a beginner, but anyone with any experience will have a
lot of success riding him.
Cowboy stands approximately 15.1 HH with a sturdy build. He’s very athletic and can really get in the ground to
stop and turn around. He has been used in a 8,000-head feedlot for 3 months, opening/closing gates, pulling
calves and packing a rope. He will really stick to a cow and has also started tracking the heel-o-matic. Not much
bothers this colt. He’s good in the arena, moving cattle or going for a trail ride and gets along great with other
horses. His sire, Two Eyed JJ, is a PRCA money earning calf roping horse, previously owned by Joe Beaver
and rode by him and Fred Whitfield. His grandsire, Ill Smoke Ya, is a world show halter qualifier, a Canadian
halter champ and points in western, English and roping. Both stallions are quiet, gentle and are great
babysitters. Cowboy is very friendly, loves attention and anyone can get along with him. Put a few more miles
on him and he’ll be a horse for the whole family.
“Bullseye” has been used for a bit of everything from drill teams to doctoring cows. Pulled lots
of calves to fire, doctored cows alone on the ranch. Head and heel branded lots of big calves
and team roped some. Has been in lots of ranch rodeos and excels at this. He does need an
experienced rider.
Western Ranch and Cow Horse
One-Year Certificate • Vermilion Campus
Education with Purpose
If you want a career in the ranching industry, you’ll love the Western Ranch and Cow Horse
certificate program. This unique program combines cattle handling skills, cattle disease
recognition and treatment, and horsemanship skills. Many feedlots utilize personnel on
horseback for checking pens and moving livestock. Cattle showing signs of illness need to be
removed and treated. Students learn to work with their horse to properly separate and move
livestock and how to process cattle. With the knowledge and hands-on experience that you’ll
gain about equine husbandry and beef production, you’ll be riding tall in the saddle as you work
towards an exciting career.
Cool Stuff and Program Fun Facts
• Your horse is part of your school supplies. Stable it on campus.
• Grab a rope and learn to handle cattle safely and efficiently.
• Polish your basic farrier skills to give your horse a “trim.”
• Take on your classmates and industry riders during the annual Working Cowboy
Competition.
• Be part of one of the most successful college rodeo clubs in Canada or the Ranch and
Feedlot Rider Club.
• Lakeland College received the 2008 Award of Distinction of Industry Leadership from the
Alberta Farm Animal Care (AFAC) partnership. AFAC promotes responsible, humane animal
care within the livestock industry. Lakeland is the first and only college or university to
receive the award.
• Understand horse behavior and get your horse to do what you want it to do.
