Rio Grande Athletics 2011-12 Honor Roll 2011-12
Junior forward Richard Isberner
NAIA CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER
Rio Grande received the NAIA’s Five-Star Award for the 12th consecutive year
for its commitment to the Champions of Character initiative. Rio scored 74
points on its 2011-12 scorecard for character training, conduct in competition,
academic focus, character recognition and character promotion with bonus
points for student-athlete GPA and zero competition ejections.

Team All-American and Mid-South
Conference Player of the Year after
leading the RedStorm to a 19-3 record
and quarterfinal berth in the NAIA
National Tournament.

Junior defender Allyson Schmelzer
(Lancaster, OH) was named Honorable
Mention All-Mid-South Conference
along with teammates Mandi
Thoma (Ontario, OH) and Vanessa
Montgomery (Chillicothe, OH).
VOLLEYBALL
Junior outside hitter Whitney
Smith (Albany, OH) was one of
three Rio players named 1st Team
All-Mid-South Conference after
leading the East Division champion
RedStorm to a 21-15 finish. Erin
Sherman (South Webster, OH) and
Lauren Raines (Albany, OH) also
earned 1st team recognition.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Guard Evan Legg (Piketon, OH)
was named Mid-South Conference
Freshman of the Year after shooting
.387 from beyond the 3-point arch. He
started seven of the 32 games.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior guard Kaylee Helton
(Lucasville, OH) was named 2nd
Team All-Mid-South Conference
after leading the RedStorm in
scoring average (15.5), free-throw
percentage (.854) and steals
(59). Shardai Morrison-Fountain
(Columbus, OH) also earned 2nd
team recognition.
BASEBALL
Junior outfielder Shane Spies (Polk,
OH) was named 1st Team All-Mid-
South Conference after leading the
conference with 12 home runs and the
RedStorm in RBI (50), doubles (21) and
slugging percentage (.627).
SOFTBALL
Junior left fielder Kaylee Walk
(Unionville Center, OH) was named
1st Team All-Mid-South Conference
after leading the RedStorm in batting
average (.388), runs scored (36), walks
(19) and stolen bases (14).
