University of Rio Grande &
Rio Grande Community College
July 1, 2001 - June 30, 2002

Dear Rio Grande Family:
A Rio Grande student recently noted that “some universities hope you succeed; Rio
Grande helps you succeed.”
This is, in a nutshell, Rio Grande’s aim for its students. We
want to help our students be successful, not only in their
academic pursuits, but also throughout their lives, both
professional and personal. Since 1876, this has been Rio
Grande’s legacy to its students and our friends have made
our mission possible.
Once again, with your support, the year was filled with
successes and growth. In 2001-2002, Rio Grande:
▼ Celebrated its 125th Anniversary
▼ Dedicated the Alumni Memorial Bell Tower
▼ Made a successful transition to semesters
▼ Revised the General Education Curriculum
▼ Opened a safer, more attractive campus entrance
▼ Formalized a transfer agreement with Hocking College to facilitate the
transfer of students
▼ Received a 5-year, $1.7 million Title III grant to improve student retention
▼ Added a Liberal Studies degree to the Fast Forward Adult Degree Program
▼ Sent both the Redmen basketball and soccer teams to the NAIA Final Four
A Rio Grande
student recently
noted that “some
universities hope
you succeed; Rio
Grande helps you
succeed.”

Plans for Rio’s future are just as exciting, including a nursing program that will be
offered on-line to the military in June 2003, new academic programs, and an expansion
of the programs and services offered at the Meigs Center, to name only a few initiatives.
We hope to provide our students with access to more programs that will give them
opportunities to be successful and to stay in this region, because this is important to
many of them and it is critical to the future of our area.
To those of you who helped make this past year significant for Rio Grande, I am most
appreciative. With your continued assistance, Rio Grande will truly be Southern Ohio’s
“premier institution.”
Sincerely,
Barry M. Dorsey
locations around Ohio.
▼ The concentration in fine arts is available with
courses on-line and in Hamilton, Chillicothe,
Portsmouth, Columbus and Rio Grande (OH).
Plans are underway to offer fine arts courses in
Toledo beginning this year. The intervention
specialist concentration is also offered in
Portsmouth and Rio Grande.
▼ New concentrations in humanities and
educational technology are meeting the needs of
public school teachers in our region. Other
program offerings and international partnerships
are also being explored.
▼ More professional development workshops for
teachers are being offered through the area
Education Service Centers and Regional
Professional Development Centers.
▼ Travel to cultural centers is an essential part of
the program. Groups traveled to New York City
Student Affairs
e|É ZÜtÇwxËá ZÉtÄ‹
Academic Affairs
This year was one of academic growth for Rio
Grande as new programs were developed for future
implementation.
▼ In response to the growing number of adult
students and the need for short-term employment
training, new one-year certificate programs in
welding, pharmacy technician and medical
transcriptionist were added to the curriculum.
▼ Programs in the planning stages include prehospital
emergency services, radiological
technology and an education paraprofessional
associate program.
▼ In order to provide another avenue of access to our
students, faculty continued to develop and teach
on-line courses to enable students to fulfill
requirements despite scheduling conflicts. Courses
in history, writing, philosophy, nursing and
graduate courses are being offered.
▼ In celebration of Martin Luther
King Day, Rio Grande
conducted a community
celebration featuring Dr.
Robert Lawson ’73 as the
keynote speaker, performances
by the Rio Grande Chorale
and a Community Choir
directed by Christian Scott ’96 and an essay
contest sponsored by the Retired Senior Volunteer
Program.
Student Services
The Student Services Division worked diligently with
students and administrators to increase student
participation and academic success.
▼ Students were provided with an expanded Student
Handbook that included not only rules and
regulations, but also departmental and staffing
4 2001-2002 Annual Report
information, a daily planner, time management
tips, and test-taking information and techniques.
▼ The nationally-recognized safety training
program “The Great Escape,” a realistic
simulation of the effects of smoke during a
fire, was demonstrated in each freshmen
residence hall. The program is informative,
educational, and fun. Above all, the training
has contributed to a decrease in residence hall
violations involving smoking, fire alarms, or
candles.
▼ The Student Programming Board established
a permanent office with increased office
hours where students assist with ideas and
gain hands-on experience in producing and
promoting activities on campus. The monthly
“Movie Night at the Cinema,” one of the
most popular activities sponsored by Student
Programming, is attended by approximately
200 students who are admitted at no charge to
the movie of their choice at the local theater.
▼ “The Red Zone,” an on-campus student
recreation center, boasts new carpeting, a
newer pool table, the latest electronic games,
karaoke, and other activities that enhance
student living and learning.
▼ Following a series of discussions throughout
the year, it has been proposed that, effective
Fall Semester 2003-2004, all residence halls
be smoke-free. Alternative activities and
information about smoking cessation will be
ongoing for students.
▼ Several fraternities and sororities contributed
to the Alumni Memorial Bell Tower and
continue to support charitable fundraising
activities on campus and in the community.

Advancement
Grant Funding
Grant assistance helped the University of Rio
Grande and Rio Grande Community College offer
opportunities for a quality education, personal
development and prepare students for the
competitive job market. Rio Grande students can
continue to successfully compete with the
knowledge-and skills-building programs funded by
these grants and gifts. The University received over
$1.4 million in private and government grants to
support this mission.
▼ In 2001, Rio Grande received a federal Title III
grant for over $1.7 million to strengthen its
instructional program, develop student support
services, and provide professional development
to faculty and staff. A new technology lab was
created to assist faculty members in developing
new teaching methods to implement in their
classes. The goal of the program is to help
students be academically successful.
▼ The CROSSROADS Program received funding
from the Department of Job and Family Services
in Gallia and Jackson Counties to provide shortterm
training to prepare economically vulnerable
youth and adults for the job market.
▼ The Tech Prep Program continued to build the
bridge between the last two years of high school
and enrollment in college level study in
technology.
▼ Area individuals who were seeking a vocational
education license were served by the School of
Education through a grant program from the
Ohio Department of Education.
▼ The Health Services Office received funding to
educate the campus community about the
dangers and consequences of violence, alcohol,
tobacco, and drug abuse.
Lifetime Leads to Legacy
A lasting marriage and a lengthy career contributed
to the legacy created in honor of the late Thomas O.
Denney, Class of ’54, a retired educator from Gallia
County.
A generous scholarship endowment has been
established through the estate accumulated and
bequeathed to the University of Rio Grande by
Denney and his wife Nina O’Dell Denney.
Thomas Denney, who retired from the Gallia
County School System, was a former employee of
the Gallipolis Developmental Center and a World
War II veteran. He passed away in July 1997.
In his honor, upon the death of Mrs. Denney in
2001, the Thomas O. Denney Scholarship was
created. The couple, who had no children, specified
that while descendants of the Denney and O’Dell
families were to receive first consideration for the
award, consideration should also be given to needy
students from Gallia County, and then to any other
students as needed.
The Thomas O. Denney Scholarship endowment is
valued at $330,000. Because the scholarship is an
endowment, only the earnings from the original
bequest will be awarded to students. Thus, the
scholarship will exist in Thomas Denney’s honor in
perpetuity.
The Vision
Rio Grande’s Plans and Goals: The Vision
In a region that is looking for
ways to create a brighter future,
Rio Grande is a key resource. It is
an institution that has accepted–
and, to a great extent, managed to
meet–the difficult task of
providing quality education and
training while instilling hope in
the hearts and minds of literally
thousands of Ohioans. Rio
Grande’s vision for the future
focuses on expanding and
extending its services to meet the
ongoing challenge of serving a
changing world and preparing
students to succeed in that world.
Rio Grande’s vision is multifaceted:
offering increased academic
and training programs to
meet the needs of students and the
workforce; providing additional
services to students; and keeping
the cost of education affordable
for Rio’s diverse constituencies.
Above all, “quality” will continue
to be the cornerstone of the institution.
Among the numerous initiatives
identified for implementation
in 2003 are the following:
▼ The development and
implementation of new
academic degree programs.
Program development will
continue to be a major focus for
the University and the
Community College. Some
potential programs include
aviation mechanics, radiologic
technology, and additional
options under the Master’s in
Education. Rio Grande began
certificate programs in
pharmacy technician and
medical records transcription in
Fall 2002 and planned new
programs for teachers’ aides and
emergency medical technicians
for 2003.
▼ The expansion of the programs
and services offered at the
Meigs Center. Rio Grande has a
strong commitment to
increasing its presence in Meigs
County and to providing more
opportunities for its residents.
Some of the programs which
may be offered there if
enough interest is shown
include the Master’s in
Education with its various
options, nursing, early
childhood education, and
allied health programs such
as medical laboratory
technology and pharmacy
technician.
▼ The renovation of Florence
Evans Hall. This building
formerly housed the School
of Business, which moved to
the new Bob Evans Farms
Hall. Plans are underway to
convert the building to a onestop
welcome and administrative
center for students.
Although plans are not final,
some of the services that may
be housed there include
admissions, finance, financial
aid, and records. This would
allow students to enroll,
register, take care of financial
aid issues and pay bills in one
easy stop–conveniences not
currently possible because
offices are located throughout
campus.
▼ Implementation of the Title III program to
strengthen the institution, retain students
and help students be successful. This program
is central to all that we do at Rio Grande.
Historically, Rio Grande has given students
extra, personal attention when there were
difficulties, whether academic, personal,
or financial. However, with the funding
provided through Title III, the support effort
will be systemic and will include features
such as specially designed classes, proactive
advising, and early intervention.
▼ An academic program review in which
programs and their effectiveness are
evaluated to ensure that resources are being
used wisely. Programs that are outdated or
irrelevant must be modified or eliminated to
make room for programs that will not only
attract students but also be meaningful in
their lives.
▼ Preparations to provide the associate’s degree
in nursing on-line to military personnel. The
first course will be offered in June 2003. This
program came about through a series of
meetings with various military representatives
when it was discovered that, while military
medics and corpsmen have extensive medical
expertise, there is no formal recognition of
that experience in the civilian workplace.
▼ A fundraising campaign to support these
important enhancements so that we can better
serve our students despite decreasing
governmental funding and a declining
national economy. The effort will begin
aggressively in 2003.
Above all, Rio Grande must always consider
whom it serves and what is best for them and for
the region. It is a frequently daunting task of
which we can never lose sight. But, it is also a
rewarding and valuable responsibility which the
University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande
Community College willingly accept, just as we
have for over 125 years.
