The Graduate Program
The Master of Education in Classroom Teaching
experienced its eleventh year of continuous growth
by attracting and serving more students in several
locations around Ohio.
▼ The concentration in fine arts is available with
courses on-line and in Hamilton, Chillicothe,
Portsmouth, Columbus and Rio Grande (OH).
Plans are underway to offer fine arts courses in
Toledo beginning this year. The intervention
specialist concentration is also offered in
Portsmouth and Rio Grande.
▼ New concentrations in humanities and
educational technology are meeting the needs of
public school teachers in our region. Other
program offerings and international partnerships
are also being explored.
▼ More professional development workshops for
teachers are being offered through the area
Education Service Centers and Regional
Professional Development Centers.
▼ Travel to cultural centers is an essential part of
the program. Groups traveled to New York City
and New Orleans-Oregon (following the
footsteps of Lewis and Clark). Future trips to
China, Ireland and Wales are being planned.
▼ The University of Rio Grande Graduate Program
received a Governor’s Award for Partnerships in
the Arts. The Governor’s Award is a statewide
program that showcases and celebrates Ohio
artists, arts organizations, arts patrons and
business support of the arts.

County
Community
Action Agency
received a grant
to support the
miners’
education and
training.
While Rio’s efforts did not yield large numbers of
students, the students who attended Rio Grande
performed well academically. During Fall Semester
2001, 38 miners and 8 spouses were enrolled,
maintaining an overall GPA of 3.42.
125th Anniversary Celebration
The University
celebrated its
125th Anniversary
with a special
convocation on
September 13,
2001, the anniversary
date of the
first classes. The theme was “Rio Grande: Still
Changing Lives After 125 Years.” The guest
speaker was Dr. Roderick G. W. Chu, Chancellor of
the Ohio Board of Regents.
The yearlong celebration of Rio Grande’s 125th
Anniversary ended with the dedication of the
Alumni Memorial Bell Tower and the Bell Tower
Ball on November 3, 2001. The dedication and ball
were originally scheduled to occur in September,
but were postponed
following the tragedy of
September 11.
The University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande
Community College expended significant effort to
enroll displaced Southern Ohio Coal Company
employees and their spouses this year. The Tri-
