The Graduate Program<br />
The Master <strong>of</strong> Education in Classroom Teaching<br />
experienced its eleventh year <strong>of</strong> continuous growth<br />
by attracting and serving more students in several<br />
locations around Ohio.<br />
▼ The concentration in fine arts is available with<br />
courses on-line and in Hamilton, Chillicothe,<br />
Portsmouth, Columbus and <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Grande</strong> (OH).<br />
Plans are underway to <strong>of</strong>fer fine arts courses in<br />
Toledo beginning this year. The intervention<br />
specialist concentration is also <strong>of</strong>fered in<br />
Portsmouth and <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Grande</strong>.<br />
▼ New concentrations in humanities and<br />
educational technology are meeting the needs <strong>of</strong><br />
public school teachers in our region. Other<br />
program <strong>of</strong>ferings and international partnerships<br />
are also being explored.<br />
▼ More pr<strong>of</strong>essional development workshops for<br />
teachers are being <strong>of</strong>fered through the area<br />
Education Service Centers and Regional<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development Centers.<br />
▼ Travel to cultural centers is an essential part <strong>of</strong><br />
the program. Groups traveled to New York City<br />
and New Orleans-Oregon (following the<br />
footsteps <strong>of</strong> Lewis and Clark). Future trips to<br />
China, Ireland and Wales are being planned.<br />
▼ The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Grande</strong> Graduate Program<br />
received a Governor’s Award for Partnerships in<br />
the Arts. The Governor’s Award is a statewide<br />
program that showcases and celebrates Ohio<br />
artists, arts organizations, arts patrons and<br />
business support <strong>of</strong> the arts.<br />

Action Agency<br />
received a grant<br />
to support the<br />
miners’<br />
education and<br />
training.<br />
While <strong>Rio</strong>’s efforts did not yield large numbers <strong>of</strong><br />
students, the students who attended <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Grande</strong><br />
performed well academically. During Fall Semester<br />
<strong>2001</strong>, 38 miners and 8 spouses were enrolled,<br />
maintaining an overall GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.42.<br />
125th Anniversary Celebration<br />
The <strong>University</strong><br />
celebrated its<br />
125th Anniversary<br />
with a special<br />
convocation on<br />
September 13,<br />
<strong>2001</strong>, the anniversary<br />
date <strong>of</strong> the<br />
first classes. The theme was “<strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Grande</strong>: Still<br />
Changing Lives After 125 Years.” The guest<br />
speaker was Dr. Roderick G. W. Chu, Chancellor <strong>of</strong><br />
the Ohio Board <strong>of</strong> Regents.<br />
The yearlong celebration <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Grande</strong>’s 125th<br />
Anniversary ended with the dedication <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Alumni Memorial Bell Tower and the Bell Tower<br />
Ball on November 3, <strong>2001</strong>. The dedication and ball<br />
were originally scheduled to occur in September,<br />
but were postponed<br />
following the tragedy <strong>of</strong><br />
September 11.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Grande</strong> and <strong>Rio</strong> <strong>Grande</strong><br />
Community College expended significant effort to<br />
enroll displaced Southern Ohio Coal Company<br />
employees and their spouses this year. The Tri-<br />
