▼ Implementation of the Title III program to
strengthen the institution, retain students
and help students be successful. This program
is central to all that we do at Rio Grande.
Historically, Rio Grande has given students
extra, personal attention when there were
difficulties, whether academic, personal,
or financial. However, with the funding
provided through Title III, the support effort
will be systemic and will include features
such as specially designed classes, proactive
advising, and early intervention.
▼ An academic program review in which
programs and their effectiveness are
evaluated to ensure that resources are being
used wisely. Programs that are outdated or
irrelevant must be modified or eliminated to
make room for programs that will not only
attract students but also be meaningful in
their lives.
▼ Preparations to provide the associate’s degree
in nursing on-line to military personnel. The
first course will be offered in June 2003. This
program came about through a series of
meetings with various military representatives
when it was discovered that, while military
medics and corpsmen have extensive medical
expertise, there is no formal recognition of
that experience in the civilian workplace.
▼ A fundraising campaign to support these
important enhancements so that we can better
serve our students despite decreasing
governmental funding and a declining
national economy. The effort will begin
aggressively in 2003.
Above all, Rio Grande must always consider
whom it serves and what is best for them and for
the region. It is a frequently daunting task of
which we can never lose sight. But, it is also a
rewarding and valuable responsibility which the
University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande
Community College willingly accept, just as we
have for over 125 years.
