2011 Alumni
Homecoming
Celebration
On June 11th the school celebrated its
traditional Homecoming Celebration. One
hundred and sixty alumni spent a wonderful
evening with classmates, friends and teachers. This
was a very special Homecoming, since the first graduating
Class of Colegio Bolivar, Class of 1961, celebrated
their 50th graduation anniversary. Diego Fernandez de
Soto, Silvia Schiess and Luz Maria Cobo (Friends Forever)
were present.
The first class to arrive was the Class of 1974, who were celebrating
their 37th graduation anniversary. More than 30
members showed up on time for a very special ceremony to
tribute Maria del Pilar Perez and Olga Lucia de Angulo, two
alumni who passed away. The two were great friends while
attending CB as kids. Class of 1974 planted a tree, a “guayaba
manzana,” near the pool and everyone participated. Thank
you so much for giving back to school!
After the ceremony was over, several classes gathered together
and went for a tour around the school. The tours were
leaded by three Student Ambassadors (11th graders). By 8
o’clock, most of the “quinquenio” classes were present (Class
of 1961, 71, 81, 86, 91 & 01) and sitting on their designated tables.
Dr. Nagy gave a warm welcome to everyone and also a
sad and emotional goodbye to Manuelita, Chemistry teacher
for more than 29 years!
After that, we played a touching video that showed the
schools expansion over the years and pictures of the classes
who were celebrating their anniversary. It’s important to mention
that not only alumni were invited; former CB employees
and current CB employees who have been with the school for
more than twenty years shared this moment.
The party began at 8:30p.m. with our alumnus and proud
singer, Kike Angel ’86, along with the band “Los Agredo”. He
sang melodies of every generation and made everybody
stand up and dance nonstop until two o’clock in the morning.
We hope this celebration brings more and more people each
year, especially recent graduated classes, who usually start
coming several years after their graduation.
I enjoyed being flattered by some of
my girl classmates.
What is a Class Captain?
A Class Captain is a representative of a
class group. This person is the primary link
between the Class and Colegio Bolivar.
The class captain's involvement is needed
to make sure that the things that matter
the most to each class group are taken
in consideration and for encouraging as
many classmates as possible to attend the
Homecoming. The captain's commitment
is contagious to classmates, generating
the excitement to "come home to remember"
and invest in Colegio Bolivar’s future!
What does a Class Captain do?
The role as a Class Captain includes:
• Inviting classmates back to CB for
Homecoming by writing an invitation
letter, e-mail, and/or making phone calls
prior to the Homecoming;
• Attending the Homecoming;
• Gathering classmates for own special
purpose at Homecoming (a special time
is set aside for class gatherings);
• Encouraging classmates; for example,
to take this opportunity to support Colegio
Bolivar through a reunion giving program
(this could include choosing a class
gift designation);
• Assisting the Alumni Office in locating
addresses of fellow classmates;
• Keeping in touch with Colegio Bolivar
through the alumni office so you can
help make the job a successful one!
There has been a growing interest towards participating as a Class Captain and
getting involved in school activities. We find the Class Captain’s role extremely
important in order to strengthen class group bonds, update data base and
increase attendance to the Alumni Homecoming.
A Class Captain does not need to work on its own!
Why not invite 2 or 3 of your classmates
to lend a hand?
What help is available to the Class
Captain?
The Alumni Office will help in every possible
way to make each class reunion a
success! We will prepare and e-mail messages
to classmates, put the Class Captain
in touch with other class captains who can
give some ideas, and be available to answer
questions.
Why consider serving as a Class
Captain?
It is not a difficult or time consuming task and
it is a lot of fun to touch base with former
classmates. Our office will assist you in every
way. If you have questions or ideas for your
reunion or special projects in celebration of
your honored year, please feel free to contact
at PBX: (572) 684 8600 / 555 2039 ext.277 or
Antarctica Exhibit at the Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson
International Airport.
Santiago’s first Antarctica exhibit opened February 9th, 2011
at the Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport and will
be on display for one full year. For the exhibit year, 2011, this
Transportation Mall is projected to have over 17 million travelers
walk the length of the full exhibit.
“Known to be one of the world's busiest airports with over
80 million travelers annually, my Antarctica exhibit will be all
along the "Transportation Mall", a one mile long corridor that
feeds into all of the gates in the airport. The sole sponsor of the
exhibit is Quark Expeditions, the carrier that I traveled aboard
to Antarctica. In addition to enhancing the airport experience,
the exhibit will raise funds for environmental protection.
All 56 photographs are for sale, with the proceeds going to
non-government organizations with the mandate to protect
the Antarctic environment. I graduated from Colegio Bolivar in
1993. I remember doing some photography for the 1993 Kiosko
yearbook. At the time, Thomas Rompf (our English teacher)
was directing the production of the Kiosko. I was still very new
to photography, but not so new to expressing myself in strange
and unusual ways. Actually, I don't think any of my photographs
were used in the '93 Kiosko because they were "too
abstract". I took that as a compliment. That was 18 years ago!
I was a student at Colegio Bolívar from 1987 to 1993, having
moved to Cali from Baltimore, Maryland. Even though all of
my family is from Colombia, the change from sixth grade at
Ridgely Middle School in Baltimore to seventh Grade at Bolívar
was epic. Everything was so vastly different and unusual to
me. I was very lucky that all of my teachers at Bolivar were very
welcoming and helpful with my transition. Thanks to my education
at Bolivar, my English was sustained at a proficient level,
and my Spanish was brought up to speed. I'm sure Bolivar was
very different back in '87-'93 compared to 2011. One thing's for
sure, Bolivar has always been about moving forward.
If any of you happen to fly through Atlanta in 2011,
check it out!”
High Presidential Counselor for Social and Economic
Reintegration.
Alejandro Eder was appointed as High Presidential Counselor
for Social and Economic Reintegration by Colombian President
Santos in September 2010. He served as the Policy Advisor for
Mr. Frank Pearl, former Colombian High Presidential Counselor
for Reintegration. High Counselor Eder has a Bachelor of Arts
degree from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, where he
majored in World Politics and minored in Philosophy. He also
audited a one year DESS degree on Europe-Latin America Relations
at the Institute des Hautes Études de l’Amérique Latine in
Paris, and received a Masters in International Affairs in December
2006 from Columbia University’s School for International
and Public Affairs in New York City.
Eder worked in the financial sector for five years, first as a Financial
Analyst with Deutsche Bank’s Latin American Corporate
Finance Division in New York, and then as the International
New Business Analyst at Inversiones Manuelita S.A., one of
Colombia’s leading agroindustrial conglomerates. Starting in
January 2007, he worked with the Office of the High Presidential
Counselor for Reintegration as his predecessor’s Policy Advisor.
In this role he contributed to the redesign of Colombia’s
community-based reintegration strategy and to deepening the
process’s exposure in the international arena as a means of
granting it greater impartial oversight, access to interested international
actors and access to valuable lessons learned and
best practices from around the world.
Alvaro Alejandro must lead the structuring and development of
the reintegration policy; reach out the national and international
De Angulo & Rinaldi Family visited
Colegio Bolivar
"I recently was able to visit CB with my wife and children. We
had not been back to Cali since we moved to Chicago from
Miami 5 years ago. The more I live the more it becomes clear
that our roots as children determine so much of who we become
as contributing adults. For those of us lucky enough to
spend many or all of our education years at CB, we benefit
from the intertwining of our potential with the culture of excellence
and pride that the school instills.
Personally, having more than 20 family members as alumni of
the school, it increases this deep sense of belonging and pride
in the school. All these reasons and many more provide the
backdrop of what was a special day of visiting the campus and
running into old friends and mentors. CB will always hold a special
place in my heart."
had the privilege of attending Bolivar from kinder 4 through
seventh grade, until we moved to the US in 1998. Bolivar made
an enormous difference in my education; it gave me a strong
academic foundation that thoroughly prepared me once I entered
eighth grade in the states. As a result, I became more
confident, strove for excellence and sought to enter advanced
placement and honors courses. More than anything though, I
have sweet and fond memories of the campus, teachers, and
close friends I still keep in touch with.”
“El Colegio está más lindo que nunca. Tantos cambios! Si viviéramos
New Book: Twice Colombia Adventure,
Friendship, and Adoption in the Andes
Mountains
Author: Patricia Woodard (Colegio Bolivar High School
Algebra and Geometry teacher 1984-1985)
I invite you to read Patricia’s beautiful book Twice Colombia.
She finished writing it when she was in Cali in 2009. Twice Colombia
is listed on the website for the Publisher: Trafford.com
and also on Amazon.com.
Overview
Patricia Woodard had always wanted to live and work in a foreign
country, but the dream seemed to be elusive. Then in
the summer of 1975 while she was teaching summer school
in her hometown of Whiteville, North Carolina, she received a
telegram offering her a teaching position in Bogotá, Colombia.
Excited and stunned to finally be realizing her dream, she accepted
the offer and set off for a year high on a plateau in the
Andes Mountains.
Several years later, she returned to Colombia, this time to teach
in sunny Cali, and along the way realized she had fallen in
love with the country and its people. Twice Colombia shares
the realities of being an expatriate in a developing country during
turbulent political times, and the pleasures of discovering
a foreign culture. From the capital city of Bogotá to the lively
city of Cali, she not only embraced the country but eventually
adopted a child there. Her excursions included a trip down the
Amazon River, where she learned a novel way to open a bottle
of wine, an Andean music festival featuring traditional music
played on traditional instruments, indulgence in the succulent
Colombian cuisine and weekends with Colombian friends who
welcomed her unconditionally to their country.
Throughout, she gives the reader a view of a country that few
Americans have experienced firsthand.

U.S. scientists recreate heart defect in a lab dish
(Reuters*) - Using skin cells taken
from children with a rare heart defect,
U.S. researchers have created
beating heart cells in the lab with the
same heart defect, allowing researchers
to test new drugs in human
cells instead of mice.
While most heart drugs had no
effect on the cells, a cancer drug
being studied by Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals
Inc appears to help, the
team led by Ricardo Dolmetsch of
Stanford University reported in the
journal Nature.
The study is among the first to use powerful new technology to create human
models of disease by reprogramming ordinary cells to behave like embryonic
stem cells, the body's master cells that can give rise to any tissue in the body.
"Because every cell in our body has the same genetic programming, that
means we can take skin cells and reprogram them to generate stem cells,
and we can take those cells to make heart cells," Dolmetsch said in a telephone
interview.
Discovered in 2006, induced pluripotent stem cells or iPS cells can be collected
from people with genetic diseases and grown in batches that live for
months and years in the lab. Dolmetsch's team collected skin cells from children
with Timothy syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that causes autism and
long QT syndrome, a defect in the timing of the heart's contractions that
makes the heart beat out of sync. People with long QT syndrome have irregular
heartbeats and are vulnerable to ventricle fibrillation, a potentially deadly
heart rhythm in which the heart beats chaotically.
"We generated these reprogrammed cells from these kids and over the last
four years or so we developed these methods for converting these cells into
cardiac cells," Dolmetsch explained.
The team reprogrammed skin cells from two Timothy syndrome patients and
five normal people, then coaxed these cells into becoming cells that form
the atrium and ventricle of the heart and nodal cells -- cells that make up
the heart's electrical system. The three cell types spontaneously clumped together
to form miniature one-chambered hearts.
HEART RHYTHM DRUGS DIDN'T WORK
While heart cells from normal patients beat at an average of 60 beats per minute, those
from patients with Timothy syndrome beat much more slowly -- at 30 beats per minute.
- 73 -
"We knew right away there was something wrong with the cells from these
kids. They would beat and they would stop and they would flutter," Dolmetsch
said.
Next, the team tested several heart rhythm drugs to see if they corrected
the problem. None worked, but they did have success with the experimental
cancer compound roscovitine, now being tested in phase 2 trials. Dolmetsch
said the drug would need to be altered to be used in heart disease, but he
said the findings show the promise of using iPS cells as a way to study human
diseases, especially for conditions in which there are no good animal models.
"The potential is really large," he commented.
Several drugs, including Merck's withdrawn painkiller Vioxx, cause long QT
syndrome and Dolmetsch said the cells could be used to screen drugs for
toxic side effects. His team is also working on genetic forms of heart failure,
and they have created a lab dish model of ventricular fibrillation, a chief cause
of cardiac death, which accounts for more than 400,000 deaths each year in
the United States. Stanford has applied for patents on the technology and
Dolmetsch said several drug companies, including Pfizer, Roche and Amgen,
have expressed interest in licensing some of the lines.
Words from Ricardo (July 2011)
“The fact that I have done relatively well in life should be a beacon
of hope for geeks everywhere. There are at least two aspects of my
time at Colegio Bolivar that I treasure. First, I am grateful to all those
teachers who put up with my strangeness and even saw it a sign of
creativity. I was a guy who wore my father's old pants that were at
least 10 cm too short me. I wore a long T shirt that said "God is dead"
and I had a talent for writing erotic limericks. I don't think I would
have survived without lots of sympathy from the teachers and headmasters
who calmed other people down when they were ready to
kick me out. Second, I had extraordinary fellow students. I went to
school when bullying was fact of life and was sometimes encouraged.
In any other school system I would have been a recluse. At Bolivar
I grew up with my classmates for the twelve most important years
of my life so they didn't think I was that odd. I was even the goalie
of the class football team (because there weren't enough boys and I
couldn't really dribble) which meant that I got to celebrate when we
won (and boy were we good. My school friends are still some of my
closes friends and you can't put a price on that. So I am proud of
my Bolivar roots and I am eternally grateful that people appreciated
strangeness.”
“…El Colegio Bolívar era en
sí mismo un micro-cosmos
en donde se podía desarrollar
cualquier proyecto, tanto
físico (tenía un gimnasio
cubierto, varias canchas
quienes me acompañaron
a crecer como ser humano
y saco pecho cada vez que
miro hacia atrás y corroboro
que nada, absolutamente
nada, cambió de esos
14 años que privilegiadamente
pude experimentar
y que me hacen hoy la
persona que soy. Espero
