Margi Vanover
Elise Desautel
Nick Johnson
John Baughman – John was absent from the meeting and asked Frank Mason to fill in for him with the treasurer’s report.
John reported that there is no budget yet for the Tracking Trials and wondered if we should allow $4000.00 for this
budget. David P’Pool motioned for this to be accepted, Steve Olson seconded. Vote passed. Will draw monies as needed
for trials.
Suzanne Belger was absent from the meeting, so LaDawn Moad filled in for her. The Denise Fenzi Seminar #1 “DRIVES
AND MOTIVATIOIN FOR ALL SPORTS” for 03/9 and 03/10/2012 had the most votes and will be held at The Guest House
on Lindsay Blvd, Idaho Falls, ID. (Times and cost still to be finalized and reported at the next meeting in October).
LaDawn Moad reported that the Agility Trials are 10/26 through 10/28. Volunteers needed. A signup sheet will be
available at October’s meeting.
Deborah Newby motioned to adjourn the Board Meeting, Steve Olson seconded, Board Meeting adjourned.
II Approval of minutes from last meeting
Diane Orr motioned to dispense reading of August meeting minutes as they were printed in the newsletter,
Randy Copeland seconded.
Lois Olson motioned that the Meeting Minutes be more explanatory and that they needed to have members LAST names
included, not just the initial. Pat Staffon assumed (going by review of what previous meeting minutes included) that the
Meeting Minutes were just to be a general summarization and that more details on events, seminars, etc. were given in
the Newsletter as well as listed on the Club’s Website including links to such events. It is her recommendation that the
format and scope of the Meeting Minutes should be established so that future secretaries understand the Club’s
expectations. As Club President, Frank Mason and Board Members should establish that format.
III Report from the Board
President, Frank Mason - General meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. A BIG thank you to all who helped with the
Obedience Trials.
Member of the Year nominations need to be sent to Shyne Brothers with a copy to Deborah Newby. Please send in by
October. Member of the Year will be announced at the Christmas Party.
Vice President, Deborah Newby- The Christmas Party is definitely scheduled for Saturday, December 15, 2012 at First
American Title Company, Inc, located at 900 Pier View Drive, Idaho Falls, ID 83402 (time not officially given at time of
this meeting).

(meeting minutes continued)
Treasurer, John Baughman - Absent from this meeting so financial report will be given at the October meeting.
Secretary, Pat Staffon - Nothing at this time.
IV Committee Reports
Kelly P’Pool sent out a BIG thank you to all class teachers for this past Obedience Class. Numbers were good and
numbers were definitely up for Canine Good Citizen Testing. Frank Mason will be checking into acquiring the 4-H Building
for the next Obedience Class to start Wednesday, February 6, 2013 (times not given at this meeting).
LaDawn Moad, filling in for Suzanne Belger, listed nominees for Board of Directors to include: Shyne Brothers,
Deborah Newby, Pat Staffon, John Baughman and David P’Pool.
LaDawn Moad also mentions that the Agility Trial for 10/26-28 will have set up time starting at 8:00 a.m. Friday with
take down on Sunday afternoon with volunteers needed. The Agility Trial will be at Wind River Arena,
70 North 4600 East, Rigby, ID. Again, signup sheet will be available at the October Club Meeting.
V New Business
Rochelle Mason still needs all committees to get their job descriptions turned in ASAP so she can get them out via e-mail
to all the Board Members for review!!!
WELCOME to new member voted in at this meeting: Sandra Caffrey has a 12-month-old Shih Tzu named Keisha. Sandra
“loves being around dogs and dog-loving people. I am retired and I like doing outside things.” Sandra is sponsored by
Diane Orr, USRVDTC Member. Sandra lives in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Wendy Baldwin brought up the fact that the Club members need to meet/greet and inspire new members to get active in
the Club. Steven Olson reminded Frank Mason to get packets put together to give to all new members and let them
know that they have been voted in so that they will start attending meetings. It is the feeling of many Club members that
the new members coming in are not welcomed like they should be. Kelly P’Pool would like more information given on
new members coming into the Club. It was noted that the majority of these new members coming in are sponsored by
Club Members. Pat Staffon will include more than just name of possible new member and name of their dog in the
Meeting Minutes. More information is given in each Newsletter AFTER they are voted in. Deborah Newby motioned we
take pictures of every member with their dog(s) to be included in the Member Directory, but that was noted down as
possible invasion of privacy. Steve Olson suggested that new members be informed better on Club business.
Cheryl Loomis will be offering Agility Practice for anyone interested on 10/07 and 10/21 at Tautphaus Park.
Glenda Haller sent out a BIG thank you to Cheryl Loomis for organizing the Obedience Practices throughout the summer.
Steven Olson motioned to adjourn the Club Meeting, Bill Orr seconded, meeting adjourned.
NEXT CLUB MEETING – 10/18/2012 Puerto Vallarta at 7:00 p.m.

Holiday Hazards for Pets
Thank you so much to Dr. Sarah Herres, DVM for contributing the following article!
Well it’s that time of year-the crisp is in the air, the trees are putting on their show of colors and everyone is gearing up
for the stream of holidays to come! So let’s gear up for our pets' holidays too.
Halloween: Of course the first thing we think of for this holiday is the CANDY! In large quantities (and sometimes not so
large) this can cause varying levels of upset tummies, pancreatitis, chocolate toxicity and sometimes xylitol toxicity.
Remember that the kids tend to squirrel these little goodies away in places they think only they know
about, but a dog's nose knows everything. Take this opportunity to educate them about the
health risks to the family pets or you can try to confiscate all you can to keep in a safe location!
Decorations can be an issue as well. If you typically use candles in pumpkins for a spooky effect,
try using the flameless tea lights or other non-flammable options to avoid accidental burns or
fire from tipped over candles. Because this is largely a nighttime holiday, we see many people
using glow in the dark jewelry and bands. The chemicals inside these can be very irritating to
the mouth and mucous membranes of your pets if they are chewed on and punctured. Another
thing to remember is, with all those trick-or-treaters, the doorbell is chiming often and the front
door is open frequently. If this type of situation is stressful for your dog or if they are the kind that bolt for the open door,
then try to find a quiet, secure place for them to spend the evening. With the many people out on the streets on
Halloween night, and the few that may be up to no good, think about keeping your pets inside for the night if possible.
Thanksgiving: This holiday is all about the food, especially the turkey. For most of us pet owners the table scraps and
human foods are no-no’s for our pets and we would never knowingly feed these tidbits. The key word here is
“knowingly”. With family in town and all the activity that takes place, sometimes food is left unattended and our pets
will consider it fair-game. Or sometimes the visiting family may think they are being kind when they are slipping your
dog a few scraps. Be vigilant with your food and the leftover scraps or bones in the garbage to prevent access by your
pets and kindly but firmly let the well-meaning family members know that your pet doesn’t need these little treats as
they could make them quite ill. Another thing to consider with visiting family and friends is the stress on your pets - they
are having their homes invaded. If this is too much for your animals, make sure they have a quiet, safe place that they
can call their own. Any visiting pets should be introduced with caution and avoid introducing toys or food items when
new dogs are together as this may precipitate a fight.
Christmas: The holliest and jolliest of the holidays can also be the most dangerous for our pets. Not only do the dangers
of the preceding holidays all exist for this one, but now we bring in several more. Often the centerpiece of the season,
the Christmas tree, holds several of the hazards by itself. The pine needles can cause
significant gastrointestinal upset as can the water in the base. Some dogs and cats will eat
the decorations: the tinsel, the ornaments, the ribbons. These are all bad news for the
intestines and can result in obstruction and/or perforation. And sometimes the tree can be
toppled over by rambunctious dogs or climbing cats. The cords from all the lights are fun for
chewing on and present an electrocution risk (remember National Lampoon’s Christmas
Vacation). Another thing we often don’t think of is the pretty packages under the tree. Any
gifts that we think may contain food should probably not be put on the ground where the

dogs will think it is theirs. Or better yet, if possible keep the gifts up high and away from curious noses . The tree could
be put behind baby gates or a smaller tree can be put up off the ground on a small table. Many of the plants of the
season can have various toxic effects. Poinsettias, lilies, mistletoe, holly, and other plants can cause gastrointestinal
distress to renal failure to acute shock.
New Year’s Eve: Just when you thought you had made it through all those holidays unscathed, the new year arrives. For
the noise-sensitive pets this is another time of year that those dreaded fireworks may come out. Keep pets inside and in
a quiet area if they are sound sensitive. Also, if having some New Year’s cocktails, keep your glasses up and away from
where the curious noses can get a sample.
Animals never cease to amaze me with their ability to get themselves into trouble, and these are just a few of the
dangers that are lurking in the holidays. That being said, the holidays are a great time of year and with a few
precautions and improved awareness of the hazards to your pets your festivities will not be interrupted with a trip to the
emergency clinic. However, as I said before, our pets often have a knack for finding trouble and if a trip becomes
necessary, the Idaho Falls Veterinary Emergency Clinic will be open 24 hours on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's
as well as on Halloween night (any time that your primary care veterinarian is closed). Call 208-552-0662 with any
questions or concerns or come to the clinic at 3151 McNeil Dr., Idaho Falls.
Nominees for Club Members of the Year
I would like to nominate Duane and Cheryl Loomis for “Members of the Year”:
