claims for New York, but it is so connectect with tlie<br />
Indian mars, trcaties, and boundaries, that we cannot wcll<br />

" At the close of that mar, this vast North-Western Tcrritory<br />
became a subject of great intercst to the National Govcrnment,<br />
as well as to certain States. Virginia claimed ahnt<br />
one-half, ancl Connccticat the other half of what is now Ohio.<br />
Virginia subsequelltly relinquished 2\11 except the tract botween<br />
thc Scioto and Miallli rivers, lino~n as tho Virginia<br />

insolvent. These unfortunate men purchased the tract known<br />
at 'The Ohio Colnpany Purchase,' and paid in the currency<br />
linonn as 'Continental Money.' Of this company was Gen.<br />
Parsons, of Newburyport, iVInssachusctts. J3c was a Major<br />

Hc snbscqnently became connected .with the history of tho<br />
Rcserre, as he obtained permission from the, Gorernor of<br />
Connedicnt to occupy the salt springs in whnt is now Wcathersficld,<br />
in Trumbul: <strong>County</strong>. He had some kind of n grant<br />
by which his heils clniined the property ; but he was nccidcntally<br />
drowned in the Big Beaver'on his retnrn to Connccticut,<br />
in 1789-his claim was rejected, nncl the 'Salt Spring<br />
tract 'became again restecl in Connecticut. He may be said<br />
to be tlie 1;ionecr of ' tlie Reserve,' and tlio connecting link<br />
between the t ro companies.<br />
"In 1795 Connecticnt sold her lands to the 'Connecticut<br />
Land Colnpany,' and thus the two great companies becamo<br />
rivals in tho settlement of the Territory. The Ohio Company<br />
conimencecl their settlement at Marietta in April, 1788-eight<br />
years before the Connecticut Company commenced theirs.<br />
"As early ns Jnnnary, 178.5, a treaty had been conclnded<br />

" In 1611 Onondaga George, with a large body of Indians<br />

February, 1851. In honor of his enterprise the proprietors<br />
nmed the principal strcet, after him, 'Howa~d Street.' The<br />
