Indian mars, trcaties, and boundaries, that we cannot wcll
speak of Ahon without beginning nt tlic closc of the Ilcvo-
" At the close of that mar, this vast North-Western Tcrritory
became a subject of great intercst to the National Govcrnment,
as well as to certain States. Virginia claimed ahnt
one-half, ancl Connccticat the other half of what is now Ohio.
Virginia subsequelltly relinquished 2\11 except the tract botween
Hc snbscqnently became connected .with the history of tho
Rcserre, as he obtained permission from the, Gorernor of
Connedicnt to occupy the salt springs in whnt is now Wcathersficld,
in Trumbul: County. He had some kind of n grant
by which his heils clniined the property ; but he was nccidcntally
drowned in the Big Beaver'on his retnrn to Connccticut,
in 1789-his claim was rejected, nncl the 'Salt Spring
to be tlie 1;ionecr of ' tlie Reserve,' and tlio connecting link
between the t ro companies.
"In 1795 Connecticnt sold her lands to the 'Connecticut
"As early ns Jnnnary, 178.5, a treaty had been conclnded
