became a subject of great intercst to the National Govcrnment,
as well as to certain States. Virginia claimed ahnt

as pay the promises of a Governnlont that 1~~as totally
insolvent. These unfortunate men purchased the tract known
at 'The Ohio Colnpany Purchase,' and paid in the currency
linonn as 'Continental Money.' Of this company was Gen.
Parsons, of Newburyport, iVInssachusctts. J3c was a Major
General in'tho \lvnr, :~ii(i served to the olose of it nit11 credit.

Hc snbscqnently became connected .with the history of tho
Rcserre, as he obtained permission from the, Gorernor of
Connedicnt to occupy the salt springs in whnt is now Wcathersficld,
in Trumbul: County. He had some kind of n grant
by which his heils clniined the property ; but he was nccidcntally
drowned in the Big Beaver'on his retnrn to Connccticut,
in 1789-his claim was rejected, nncl the 'Salt Spring
tract 'became again restecl in Connecticut. He may be said
to be tlie 1;ionecr of ' tlie Reserve,' and tlio connecting link
between the t ro companies.
"In 1795 Connecticnt sold her lands to the 'Connecticut
Land Colnpany,' and thus the two great companies becamo
rivals in tho settlement of the Territory. The Ohio Company
conimencecl their settlement at Marietta in April, 1788-eight
years before the Connecticut Company commenced theirs.
"As early ns Jnnnary, 178.5, a treaty had been conclnded
~t Fort 3IcIntosl1, (non?Benver,Pa.) with the Indians, by which
it was declared thnt tohe 1,oiinilnry betwcca tlie United Stntcs
and thc Indians shonld 'cornmcnce at tlie mouth of the
Cuyahoga, to extend up the river to the Portage, between
that and tlic Tuscarora branch of tho lfnskingum, then down
that, branch to thc c~ossing nl)ove Fort Lau~ens,' (now
Bolivar).
"The Indiaas bcing atill ilis~tisfied, a new treaty mas
nlado with them, by Govcrnor St. Clnir, in 1780, by which the
boundaries, as fised by the treaty of Fort RicIntosh, were ,
confirmed.
"This did not, Ilowevcr, prodnce tho res~zlts anticil~nted,
and tlie Indians secmecl cletermined to holcl on to their beloved
rivers Cnyalioga nud Tnscarawas. This producecl the
fatal expeditions of Harn~ar in 1790, and St. Clnir in '91, ancl
tho victorious cspedition of ll'ayne in '94. In tlie spring of
1701 the army asseinbled nt Port Grecnville, now the county
scat of Dnrkc col~nty, and on the 20th of August of that year,
enconntercd thc coinbined Indian forces nt the foot of tlio
