Dear Parishioners,
Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Rev. William Sloan Coffin once observed, “Remember what history
teaches: never do people do evil so cheerfully as when they do it from
religious conviction.” Well over a hundred years ago, President
Abraham Lincoln had said that he never worried if God was on his side
but was more concerned that he would be on God’s side. Poor God is
often pulled in as the final blow against people we don’t like. We see
this on the evening news and read it daily in the newspapers. We easily
believe that God works only through “official channels” which we
recognize. Today’s first and third readings remind us that God’s Spirit is
not restricted by the human preference to have a neat, well-ordered
world—whether in the time of Moses or Jesus or in our own day.
The first two readings speak about God’s grace and how God detests
smug religion. In the first reading God’s grace came upon Eldad and
Medad even though they were not present with the 70 elders. In the
second reading in the book of James states that God is not an object to
be bought, sold or traded as the market allows.
I think the Gospel states what God wants us to follow. It is a religion
based on love, not fear. When we love God in a mature way, we find that
love expressing itself in many ways—including giving a cup of water to
someone who is thirsty. If our religion is based on love, we will move
toward ever-greater generosity (with friends, family members and
complete strangers). If our religion is based on fear, we will concentrate
on protecting ourselves, by means of a seemingly respectable legalism,
from any demands God or our neighbors might make of us.
Laws are necessary, even for disciples of Jesus, and prudence means a
very important virtue. But we are not saved by laws which limit our
responsibility; we are saved by God’s law of love which led the totally
sinless Jesus to die for us sinners.
I call your attention to some upcoming events this week. First of all, on
October 3 rd and 4 th , we will celebrate St. Francis Days. On October 3 rd ,
you are invited to the Franciscan Renewal Center for the “Transitus” or
the Passing of St. Francis. This is not a Mass, but a solemn remembrance
of those final days and hours of the life of the Poverello. Then, on
October 4 th , we will celebrate the Solemnity of St. Francis of Assisi with
two beautiful Masses at noon and at 6:00 p.m. During the Mass, we will
have the traditional blessing and distribution of the olive branches for
peace. A lovely dinner will follow the Mass.
Mark your calendars for our annual Parish Picnic on October 14th, where
will announce the winner of our Raffle with the 1st prize being $2000. Its
not to late to purchase your raffle tickets at the welcome booth after Mass
or in the Gift Shop. Hope to see you all there!
Have a great week!
Love,

in Ordinary Time
OUTSIDERS AND INSIDERS
Since the Second Vatican Council,
Catholics have been led to a deeper
awareness of the universal call to
holiness rooted in baptism. This call to holiness, that we once
thought we alone possessed, we now know to be true of all the
baptized. Division among those who have followed the Lord
Jesus has been around since the very beginning of Christianity.
Jesus’ apostles complained to him about others, outside their
circle, who were driving out demons in the name of the Lord.
Jesus set them straight by telling them that “whoever is not
against us is for us” (Mark 9:40). Imagine what the world
would be like if we were able to lay down the divisions that
exist among us and work together, inspired by God, to bring
peace and justice to those who are in need.
UNITY AND THE CALL TO HOLINESS
In John’s Gospel, the Lord utters a long final discourse in
which he prays that his disciples and all who follow him will
become one. It is a sad reality that in a world marked by
division, even those who are baptized into Christ Jesus
frequently cannot come together in unity to work toward
building God’s reign. We often expect the leaders of the
Christian churches to do the work of Christian unity. In reality,
that work begins within our homes, neighborhoods, schools,
civic organizations, and places of business. In today’s Gospel
from Mark, the Lord tells his followers that they should cut
away any part of their bodies that leads them into sinfulness.
The Church—the Body of Christ—sometimes needs to take a
look at itself to see if there is anything that needs to be cut
away. Disunity is perhaps one of those things about us that we
need to cut off in order to reflect the face of Christ more fully.
For many centuries, the Franciscans have kept the memory
of the death of St. Francis as a special time of prayer. The
“Transitus” or “Passing” of St. Francis will be celebrated on
Wednesday evening, at 7:00 p.m., October 3rd at the
Franciscan Renewal Center. “The Transitus” of St. Francis
commemorates the death of St. Francis of Assisi at the little
Church of Our Lady of the Angels of the Portiuncula. Then,
on Thursday, October 4th, here at St. Mary’s, we will
celebrate with a special, festive Mass at 6:00 p.m. followed
by a reception. As is the custom, during the Mass, we will
bless and distribute olive branches—a sign of the peace
Francis preached. Please mark your calendars and plan to
participate in these two special liturgies.
