Preseason Game #3 • Houston Texans vs. New Orleans Saints • Sunday, August 25, 2013
WATT STANDS ALONE WITH 15 & 15 MARK
Since passes defensed were officially tracked beginning in 1991, only
11 players have recorded 10 sacks and 10 passes defensed in a single
season. Texans DE J.J. Watt is the only player to record at least 15
sacks and 15 passes defensed in the same season. Watt and Reggie
White are the only defensive linemen to record at least 13 sacks
and 13 passes defensed in that time.
Below is a look at the players who have had at least 10 sacks and 10
passes defensed in a single season since 1991.
SACKING AND SWATTING
Texans DE J.J. Watt’s propensity to get his hands on quarterbacks and
their passes earned him the moniker “J.J. Swatt.” Watt set an NFL record
for a defensive lineman with 16 passes defensed and led the NFL with a
franchise-record 20.5 sacks.
Five of Watt’s 16 passes defensed were picked off, with four leading to
Texans scores. His ability to get his hands on passes at the line of scrimmage
has become one of his calling cards and also led to a pick-six for
the 6-foot-5 Watt in the 2011 Wild Card game against Cincinnati.
Since he has come into the NFL, Watt leads all defensive linemen
with 20 passes defensed. Watt led all defensive linemen in passes defensed
in 2012.
WATT NAMED DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE MONTH TWICE
DE J.J. Watt was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for
September and December. He is the only player in franchise history to
win the award twice in one season.
In September, Watt led the NFL in sacks and helping the Texans to a 4-0
record. Watt led Houston’s defense with an NFL-best 7.5 sacks, and had
10 quarterback hits, five passes defensed and two fumble recoveries.
He helped the Texans defense hold opponents to League-lows of 273.0
yards per game and 14.0 points per game. He also became the first
Texans player to record more than one sack in four consecutive games.
Watt was named AFC Defensive Player of the Month after leading the
NFL in sacks (6) and forced fumbles (4) in December.
Watt’s six sacks in December increased his NFL-leading total to 20.5
on the season. He became the ninth player in NFL history to record 20 or
more sacks in a season. Watt forced a fumble in four consecutive games
to tie a franchise single-season record.
Watt is the third Texan to win multiple player of the month honors, joining
RB Arian Foster (October 2011, September 2010) and WR Andre
Johnson (October 2008, November 2012).
#Texans DE @JJWatt ranked 6th all-time with 20.5 sacks
in 2012.
#Texans DE @JJWatt factored into 95 plays of zero or
