DEC 2011
M.P.P. OTTAWA CENTRE
By Yasir Naqvi, MPP
Our government recently took
two important steps to make
sure that our roads are safer
for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers.
On October 24, Dr. Andrew
McCallum, Chief Coroner for Ontario
announced that the Office of the Chief
Coroner will be conducting a review
of cycling deaths across the province.
This review is being undertaken as a
result of public concern surrounding
the issue of cycling safety.
The review will be led by Dr.
Dan Cass, Regional Supervising
Coroner - Toronto West Region,
and will include deaths from 2006
to 2010. The purpose of the review
is to identify common factors
that may have played a role in the
deaths, and where possible, to make
recommendations to prevent similar
deaths. The review is expected to be
completed in spring 2012. A report
will be issued at its conclusion. A
coalition of groups including cyclists
The Ottawa Humane Society
(OHS) reminds pet owners
that the holidays present many
hazards for pets. Here are the OHS’s
Twelve Pet Tips for Christmas to
keep your companion animals safe,
healthy and happy over the festive
season.
1. Holidays are a busy time for
visiting — if you’re away, have
someone check in on your animal
or board your pet.
2. If you’re entertaining,
consider keeping your pets in a
quiet room away from the noise
and activity. If they’re mingling
among the guests, make sure they
don’t share the rich holiday finger
foods!
Cycling has become an important
part of our community, and cyclists
need to feel confident that they are
safe when they are on the streets.
Recent accidents involving cyclists in
our community have resulted in tragic,
needless deaths. This review will
be an important tool to help ensure
cyclists are protected and encouraged
when they are cycling.
On November 7, Dr. Andrew
McCallum announced that the Office
3. Christmas ornaments should
be “pet-friendly.” Avoid using
tinsel on trees! Curious animals are
attracted by the shiny strings and
may swallow them, which can lead
to serious injury — and expensive
surgery!
4. Barricade the water trough
around the tree to prevent your
pet from drinking the water,
which may be dirty and contain pine
needles, which are indigestible.
5. Secure the cords on your
Christmas lights to prevent your
pet from chewing on them, and
keep animals away from open
candle flames.
of the Chief Coroner will also be
conducting a review into pedestrian
deaths across the province.
The review will be led by Dr.
Bert Lauwers, Deputy Chief Coroner
- Investigations. The purpose of the
review is to identify common factors
that have played a role in pedestrian
deaths and where appropriate, make
recommendations to prevent similar
deaths in the future.
Pedestrian fatalities that have
occurred in 2010 will be the focus
of the review which is anticipated to
be complete in the spring of 2012. A
report will be issued at its conclusion.
6. Keep your pets away from
mistletoe, holly, poinsettias and
amaryllis. If ingested, they may
cause vomiting, diarrhea and/or other
problems. If your pet has ingested
something you’re unsure about, call
your veterinarian.
7. After gifts have been
unwrapped, discard or store
wrapping paper and ribbons,
which could be dangerous toys for
pets.
8. If you don’t know what’s
in a package, don’t leave it under
the tree! That wrapped parcel could
contain chocolate, which is toxic for
cats and dogs.
9. Table scraps and left-overs
The tragic
accident that occurred recently at the
corner of Bronson Avenue and Slater
Street is an example of how we need to
take road safety seriously. I hope that
you will take the time to participate in
this review and provide your feedback
on how we can improve safety on our
streets.
Ontario currently has the safest
roads in North America, but as our
modes of transportation are evolving,
we must ensure that our laws are
keeping up. People need to feel safe
when they are cycling or walking, and
that is why we need your thoughts
and suggestions on how to make this
happen.
Please do not hesitate to contact
me if I can ever be of assistance to
you. I look forward to hearing from
you.
Together, we are building a safer
community.
The Ottawa Humane Society’s Twelve Pet Tips for Christmas
aren’t just too rich for your pets —
bones in the meat could lead to
serious complications or death.
10. Ensure that edibles in
Christmas stockings or on the tree
are unreachable by your pet and
away from dangerous places, such as
the fireplace.
11. Always ensure that your pet
is wearing adequate identification.
With more frequent comings-andgoings,
it’s easy for your pet to slip
out of the house unnoticed.
12. On colder days, limit your pet’s
exposure to the out-of-doors to
short time periods.
