SAMS Present DSTP Findings to
Stakeholders
THE Scottish Association of Marine Scientists
(SAMS) engaged by the government of
PNG to conduct the upwelling study for Ramu
Nickel Project’s Deep Sea Tailing Placement
(DSTP) system has presented its findings to
the Project stakeholders, including Basamuk
landowners on Nov 27, 2012 in Madang.
Dr. Tracy Shimmield, SAMS’s Associate Director
assisted by SAMS Principal Scientist Dr.
Kenny Black presented the report titled, “An
Investigation into Upwelling along Rai Coast,
Papua New Guinea” looking into possibilities
of upwelling of treated tailings from the Ramu
NiCo refinery placed below 150 meters under
the sea at the Basamuk Bay.
The investigation detected tailing material in
the water column surrounding the outfall but
the metal concentrations are lower and well
below the government’s permitted standard.
She said the investigation also discovered that
the ocean currents in the area of the outfall are
weak and possibilities of upwelling are unlikely.
The investigation also confirmed that there are
no possibilities that the water from the depth
of 150 meters below the outfall where the
tailing are placed could be uplifted to the sea
surface by upwelling at any time.
“However, theoretically it looks possible
during the El Nino conditions but further
research is needed to confirm that.”
“Ocean currents are relatively weak and there
appears to be a persistent weak onshore
flow along the coast. The tidal range is

CCIMs Visit Ramu NiCo
THE PNG Chief Inspector of Mines, Mr.
Mohan Singh led a group comprising
of Chief Inspectors of Mines from Australia
and New Zealand, and representatives from
Common Wealth Canberra Australian and New
Zealand to Ramu NiCo in Madang on Friday
September 14, 2012.
The delegation traveled by helicopter to
Kurumbukari Mine site and later to Basamuk
Refinery as part of the 54th Conference of
Chief Inspectors of Mine in Australia from
September 13 to September 19. 2012.

Ramu NiCo’s Chief Operating Officer (COO),
Mr. Gao Yongxue, Vice President Mr. Pan
Hengli, Registered Manager of Works (acting)
Mr. Philip Allcorn, Deputy Registered Manager
of Works Mr. Wang Jun, and other senior
management team received the delegation
and took them on the tour of HPAL, Limestone
Plant, Acid Plant, Neutralization & Product
area, Deep Sea Tailing Placement (DSTP) and
the Wharf.
The Mine Inspectors exchanged views of the
hydrometallurgical process of laterite ore and
the third generation technology applied on
the site.
Mr. Singh acknowledged and spoke highly
of the improvement that has taken place
in Health Safety and Environment (HSE)
management over the past two years.
Mr. Singh said the conference in PNG marks
the 54th anniversary of CCIM and is certain to
raise the profile of the country and its mining
industry to a new level.
The Inspectors visited KBK Mine
MRA Acting Managing Director, Philip Samar
explained that the CCIM is the highest body
of regulators in the South Pacific region, and
one of its main roles is to engage in furthering
the cause of occupational health and safety of
persons working in the mining industry.
Mr. Samar said since its inception more than
50 years ago, PNG was only an ‘observer’ in
this forum but with the tireless effort of Mr.
Singh, PNG was given a ‘full member’ status
in August last year.

Ramu NiCo Gains Valuable Experience at
Emergency Response Challenge
THE RAMU NiCo ER team’s first-ever
participation in the National Mines
Emergency Response Challenge in Port
Moresby in November has provided them with
some valuable experiences and knowledge.
Also, Ramu NiCo is the only developer who
sent two ER teams for the Challenge, namely,
that of KBK Mine and Basamuk Refinery
respectively.
Basamuk Emergency Response Team
Coordinator, Mr. Dave Williams said “This
really is a great opportunity for the team
members to experience challenging tasks in a
controlled environment, not to mention the
camaraderie these events build within our
own teams.”
Teams participated in realistic scenarios to
evaluate their knowledge and skills and to
compete against other mines from PNG.
Mr. Williams said the competition was always
going to be fierce with well established
Emergency Response Teams competing.
“I was pleased to see our first time challengers
enjoy the experience of teamwork and compete
against experienced teams and individuals from
other mines without any hesitation.” said KBK
ERT Superintendent, Danny Mandrap who also
attended the Challenge.
“I look forward to the 2013 Challenge now
that our teams have competed for the first
time,” he added.
During the two day event, there were four
practical events (Hazmat, Search & Rescue,
Fire Fighting and Rope Rescue) and a theory
assessment, covering all aspects of emergency
response.

competition will be approached with total
confidence given their current experiences
with ongoing regular trainings.

KBK Mine Operators Certified
TOTAL of twenty-four operators at the
A KBK Mine were issued with Certificates
of Competency Training on Heavy Equipment
Operation on September 19 after successfully
completing the training.
Out of the 24, nine are volvo operators,
eight are excavator operators, four are dozer
operators, two are roller operators and one is
a front end loader operator.
The operators went through a series of
competency training in both theory and
practical covering subjects including the safe
mining operation on site with more emphasis
on the safety operation of the equipments
as well as the improving of efficiency at the
mining area.
The training was conducted at KBK Mine site
by a qualified trainer, Mr. Elison David from
October to December last year and continued
from January to April this year.

were General Manager KBK Mine Mr. Elmer
Ferguson and Deputy General Manager
Sarimu Kanu as well as Mine Superintendent,
Li Xingjia, Mine Supervisors John Molongs and
other officers.

THE PRESIDENT of the China Metallurgical
Group Corporation (MCC), Mr. Guo Wenqing
stated that the company is hoping to find new
opportunities for a "win-win" cooperation in PNG
and the South Pacific region.
Mr. Guo was in the country for the

overcome various difficulties and challenges.
He further stated that as the biggest
investment by Chinese enterprises in the
South Pacific region and the flagship overseas
mining investment of MCC, Ramu Project is a
significant milestone for MCC on its path of
developing overseas market.
Mr. Guo said the successful construction
completion of Ramu Project provides MCC
with valuable experience to develop overseas
markets and has explored a well-trodden
path for China’s enterprises to “go global”.

Usino-Bundi Welcomes Ramu NiCo

“ N behalf of the 40,000 people of Usino-
Bundi, I would like to welcome the main
investors of the Ramu Nickel Project, the MCC
Group to Madang and PNG.”
The Member for Usino-Bundi, Mr. Anton
Yagama made the remarks when welcoming
a high-level delegation from China and the
Mining Minister, Byron Chan during the official
welcome function at the Madang Resort Hotel
on Wednesday, December 5 2012.
“Starting from the mountains of Usino-Bundi
to the coast of Rai Coast and Madang, I can
say that we are experiencing a mining boom
in our district of Usino and Bundi.
“My people of Usino - Bundi are happy that
MCC has invested in this Project.”
“The impact is enormous and we are looking
forward to the development,” Mr Yagama said.
The Member said revenue from the Project
is expected to bring in huge revenue for the
province and the country in the next decades.
Mining Minister, Byron Chan who was present
during the welcome dinner said the Ramu
nickel mine has a long history dating back to
1962 since it was first discovered.
The Minister said without Ramu NiCo
developing the Project, PNG would not have
known that there are other precious metals in
this country.
Mr. Chan also stated that the Deep Sea Tailing
Placement case that delayed the progress of the
Project was not an easy ride for Ramu NiCo.
“I am pleased by the findings of the SAMS

ahead.”
“I congratulate and thank you in continuing
through all the difficulties to come this far,”
Mr Chan said.
The Minister also took time to thank all the
stakeholders of the Ramu Project for their
cooperation in bringing the Project forward

School Fees
RAMU NiCo on Wednesday, October 24,
2012 presented two cheques worth over
K16,000 to help with local education in the
Usino-Bundi district.

Deputy General Manager, Stotick Kamya on
behalf of the Company presented K10, 600 to
the Emmanuel Christian Academy and K5,400
to International Training Institute (ITI) for fees
covering a student, Noah Aizuwe.
Mr. Kamya during the small presentation
ceremony said Ramu NiCo is committed to
investing in education for children in its Project
impacted areas.
The school fee assistance each year covering
all four landowner association areas is not
covered under the Project MOA but displays
Ramu NiCo’s generosity towards the impact
area children.
“As a corporate citizen, we are proud to help
and are committed,” Mr. Kamya said.
He said over the years Bundi LLG and Rai
Coast LLG have been disadvantaged and

to school.
Since 2010, the Company out of its initiative
established the school subsidy scheme to
assist children from the Project areas.
The cheques were received by the principal
of Emmanuel Christian Academy, Joe Kapi
and Chris Aizuwe, the father of the student

Kurumbukari Landowner Association director,
Eddie Itarai, who was present to witness the
presentation, said education is an important
investment by Ramu NiCo.
Mr. Itarai also spoke highly of the Emmanuel
Christian Academy, a private school that was
established at Enekuai, a relocation area up at
the Kurumbukari plateau.
Chris Aizuwe also thanked Ramu NiCo for the
assistance to his son’s fees at the International
Training Institute (ITI) in Port Moresby.

Ramu NiCo Promotes Local Culture
RAMU NiCo, for the third consecutive year
since 2010 has sponsored the famous
Kangal Festival in the Rai Coast district of
Madang province.
Kangal is the local name for feathers and also
refers to a headdress made of feathers.
The “Annual Ramu NiCo Kangal Festival” was
held at Kubang show ground at Saidor district
from October 24 to 25. Ramu NiCo obtained
the naming rights in 2010 as the major
corporate sponsor.
A total of 14 kangal dancers for the day
displayed their unique culture which is also
associated with the practice of piercing noses.
At midnights the people danced seven
Kongkap (passim gras) with the dancers legs
painted in black, red and white.
The show goers were fortunate to observe
magnificent kangals intricately woven into
a circular shape with radiating colors of red,
black and white were displayed.
The large kangal were fixed to the pole, the
end of which is tied to the head of the dancer
and covered with a skull cap.
To add more flavor, four theatre groups and two
string bands also performed on both days.
Founder and chairman of the festival, Soge
Dilambe said that he was happy to see that the
people are interested to take part in the show
and encouraged such to continue in the future.

“This is your festival and culture and you must
take pride in it. Without our culture, we have
no identity,” Dilambe said.
“Ramu NiCo sponsored the festival in 2010,
2011 and this year as well. We appreciate
the continued support by the Company to
preserve our unique culture and tradition,” Mr.
Dilambe said.

Madang International Students
Impressed with Ramu NiCo Visit
Corporate & Community Relations
STUDENTS from the Madang International
School in Madang town were thrilled
during an excursion to the Ramu NiCo
Madang ‘Glass-house’ office.
The 57 students in Grade 6 and Grade 8 and
three teachers were hosted by the Ramu NiCo
Corporate Affairs officers, who presented to
them the development of Ramu Project since
its inception.
Ramu NiCo Public Relations Manager, Nick
Zuo took time to explain in simple terms to
the young and curious students the Project
information including the technology,
community assistances, environment
protection, sustainable development theory in
his power-point presentation.
He also pointed out that Ramu Project is
significant in stimulating PNG’s growth.
Corporate officers from Ramu NiCo were also
answering various questions from the students
in the last Q & A section.
The coordinator of the excursion and teaching
staff, Kenneth Liwayong said the visit was
very educational in that most times students
only get second hand information about
Ramu NiCo. The visit to the Ramu NiCo ‘Glass
House’ and having the opportunity to hear
from the officers regarding the Project was
very inspiring and educational.

Over its designed 20-year life the Project is
estimated to generate significant economic
development to the PNG government and
local shareholders by way of taxes, royalties,
salaries and dividend payments.

Ramu NiCo Joins in World AIDS Day
AS a responsible corporate citizen of
Madang, Ramu NiCo Management (MCC)
once again took part in the World AIDS Day
float and speech day at the Bates oval in
Madang town, on Friday, December 2, 2012.
Ramu NiCo employees at its Madang Base
joined in a float using a company vehicle. The
convoy started from the Madang Provincial
Government office and traveled along the
Modilon Drive to the Bates oval where the
speeches took place.
As the float was moving along the Modilon
Road, those on board the vehicle distributed
condoms and reminded the public to be
wary of the HIV/AIDS and be faithful to their
married partners.
To mark the World AIDS Day, the World Health
Organization has issued a statement on global
progress in cutting new infections and AIDSrelated
deaths.
According to WHO figures, last year, there
were 2.5 million new infections – down
700,000 from the 2001 figure - and an
estimated 1.7 million people died from AIDSrelated
illnesses last year – 600,000 fewer
then in 2005.

Wass Matau Fulfills Social and
Corporate Obligation
WASS Matau Limited, a landowner
company of the Coastal Pipeline area of
the Ramu Project is kindly sharing its earning to
help schools, health centers and communitybased
organizations in the Astrolabe Bay area of
Rai Coast, Madang province.
The Landco on November 23 made several
donations in forms of cheques to Erima
primary and elementary school, Erima village
elementary school and Alemo elementary
school. It later proceeded to Uya village where
it presented K1000 each to Uya elementary
school and Sasida Women Cooperative Group.

is part of the company’s social and corporate
obligations to schools, churches, health
centres and community-based organizations
within the Coastal Pipeline area.

Wass Matau Limited’s public relations officer,
Ken Molou stated that so far this year the
company has presented about K26,000 as
part of its social and corporate obligation
to groups within its impacted area. It also
assisted in giving donation to the Madang
team to the PNG Games in Kokopo.
Wass Matau Limited was formed in 2006 and
is currently into the business of civil works and
plant hire, hire of equipments for civil works,
real estate and agriculture.
