Great Southern Touring Route
Australia’s most compact mainland state, Victoria
offers a magical journey through a range of exciting,
enchanting and exquisitely different landscapes.
Melbourne, or Marvellous Melbourne to give it its full
name, is the cultural and sporting hub of the nation.
Proudly cosmopolitan this liveable and loveable city
on Port Phillip Bay offers art galleries, major events,
theatres, restaurants and a charming river, making
it a natural starting and finishing point.
Take the journey of a lifetime along the Great Ocean
Road with its rugged coastline, lush forests and
overpowering sense of freedom – an unforgettable
experience.
The road also links the major regional centres
cum bustling visitor destinations of Geelong
and Warrnambool.
The soaring mountains of the Grampians National
Park have been the spiritual home of the Aboriginal
people for tens of thousands of years. Learn all about
the ancient rock paintings of the Gariwerd people at
Halls Gap, right in the heart of the national park.
Ballarat is a city built on the precious metal taken
from the surrounding goldfields in the 1850s. There
are also many modern treasures.
And if it’s a wilder time you’re after, native Australian
wildlife abounds across the region - kangaroos,
koalas, platypus, birds and wildflowers.
awesome surf culture and unique natural attractions
Geelong and the Great Ocean Road
is lauded as an outstanding wildlife
destination, with the marine life
of Port Phillip Bay the jewel
in its crown.
Just an hour on the freeway from
Melbourne, Geelong is a super-convenient
hub for a myriad of unfolding sights and
experiences.
Rise above it all with a helicopter or
seaplane journey over Corio Bay, then relax
deckside in a snazzy restaurant or wine bar.
Allow time to explore the beautiful Bellarine
Peninsula where you can share a swim with
dolphins or seals, discover a likeable drop in
a local winery and indulge your inner foodie
with fresh seafood, farm-nurtured produce
and welcoming village cafés. Lighthouses
stand guard over uncrowded beaches and
maritime history pervades the salty air.
Follow the coast to Torquay and iconic Bells
Beach, celebrated as the home of ‘Aussie’
surf culture. Make no mistake: this is “surf
city” – check out the Surf World Museum
and a surfing retail plaza like no other in
Australia. Then perch atop an ochre cliff to
spy surfers taking on the legendary
Southern Ocean swells.
From here, head west and you are officially
journeying the Great Ocean Road, one of
the globe’s greatest drives and the biggest
war memorial (anywhere). It’s a magical
drive slicing between the ocean and the
bush, and punctuated by the vibrancy of
coastal resort towns like Lorne and Apollo
Bay. This is one experience you might want
to tick off your “bucket list” twice.
Top 10 Must Do Experiences…
Geelong
1. A day by the bay: Waterfront Geelong
is alive with activity: on the water,
in the sky and bayside. Funky new
restaurants, timber promenade walks,
a vintage carousel and stunning public
art beckon.
2. Today meets yesteryear: The Amazing
21st Century Garden is the centerpiece
of the Geelong Botanic Gardens, which
is a feast for the senses with its exotic
and Australian plants.
Bellarine Peninsula
3. Eco adventures: Discover the wildlife
that calls Port Phillip Bay home
including dolphins, seals, whales,
penguins and sea birds with South Bay
Eco Adventures.
Torquay
4. Surf’s up! Take a surfing lesson from
a pro, explore the Surf World Museum
or just hang-out in the spiritual home
of surfing.
Lorne
5. Coffee shop: That’s coffee and shop:
while you take-in the glistening waters
of Loutit Bay from Lorne’s divine
seaside café and retail strip.
Apollo Bay
6. Catch of the day: Choose your own
crayfish fresh off the wharf, tee-off in
paradise or amble a windswept,
pristine beach.
Cape Otway
7. Light up: A detour to the Cape Otway
Lightstation is its own reward – think
ghostly spirits, wildlife up-close and
eye-goggling ocean vistas.
Weeaproinah
8. Let fly: Otway Fly Treetop Adventures
takes you high into the treetops for an
experience like no other. Want more?
Try the new Zip Line Tour.
Otways and Surrounds
9. Choose your adventure: The 104km
Great Ocean Walk weaves through
stunning national parks and deserted
beaches. Step on or step off at your
convenience.
10. Wild encounters: Venture to the Great
Otway National Park’s Lake Elizabeth,
for a chance to spy the elusive egglaying
platypus in its natural habitat.
Twelve Apostles &
GREAT OCEAN ROAD
A world of wonder awaits - stacks of rocks, shiploads of
maritime heritage and mountains of volcanic legend
> Twelve Apostles, Port Campbell National Park
18 | International Trade Manual 2012-2013
When nature carved the Twelve
Apostles rock stacks from
the limestone cliff coast, she
created an icon to be relentlessly
photographed and revered around
the world. In fact, nature has had
her way with this entire coastline
and hinterland.
Beyond Apollo Bay, the famous Great Ocean
Road leads you inland, through the Great
Otway National Park. Visit Melba Gully at
night and discover that glow worms are not
mythical creatures.
Rejoin the coastline at Princetown and
prepare for nature’s main act – the Twelve
Apostles, bellowing blowholes and grand
gorges that take giant-sized bites from
the coastline.
The most dramatic of the gorges,
Loch Ard Gorge, whispers of the region’s
shipwreck heritage, with the moving story
of the final journey of the Loch Ard retold
nightly at Warrnambool’s Flagstaff Hill
Maritime Village.
Warrnambool’s vibrancy as a major regional
centre doesn’t compromise its charm as a
seaside town. That means the best of both
worlds: you can visit Logans Beach between
June and September to see Southern Right
Whales in their natural nursery, dine in style
at a first-class restaurant and then retire to
five-star accommodation. Or you can walk
or cycle the promenade, chill-out over a
leisurely latte and pitch a tent for the night
under a big starry sky.
Tower Hill is a state game reserve,
a beautiful haven for wildlife. Geologically
speaking, it’s a dormant volcano with an
ancient history of violent eruption that
belies its tranquil ambience.
Postcard-pretty Port Fairy is a quaint fishing
village with heritage architecture, a thriving
arts culture and an annual folk festival that
swells its tiny population to thousands.
Top 10 Must Do Experiences…
perspective on the Twelve Apostles.
created it, see the protected wildlife
that make it home and soak up the
Grampians
National Park
& Surrounds
A place for your spirit of adventure
to spread its wings…
> Grampians National Park
22 | International Trade Manual 2012-2013
Climb the rocks. Kayak the rivers.
Walk the bush. Whether you love to
live on the edge or just nudge the
boundaries you’ll be exhilarated by
what’s on offer in the Grampians
National Park. Join a guided tour
or go solo. Just do it!
Nature’s been perfecting the Grampians
National Park for over 400 million years.
So why shouldn’t you take a spell at a lookout,
breathe in the rugged, mountainous
scenery and feel the strength of the land?
Waterfalls, wildflowers and wildlife are in
abundance here. Spring is a special time
to visit when the wildflowers are blooming
wonderful and the falls are in full flow from
spring rains. Don’t stop there: feed your
inner shutterbug or artiste with the varying
delights of each season.
Take a twilight bushwalk to see nocturnal
wildlife in action. In daylight look for ‘roos
and emus and listen for the hundreds of
bird species that inhabit the park.
In Halls Gap, visit the Brambuk Aboriginal
Culture Centre for insights into the culture
of the region’s first inhabitants. Learn how
they endowed the national park with a
special legacy… a collection of Aboriginal
rock art unrivalled in southern Australia.
Today, the locals produce fine wines and
fresh produce so you can venture into new
culinary territory, too. For a meal you’ll long
remember, try the award-winning Royal
Mail Hotel at Dunkeld. It’s just one of many
foodie experiences on offer in regional
towns like Hamilton, Ararat and Halls Gap.
Top 10 Must Do Experiences…
Grampians National Park
1. Just add water: Brimming lakes, rivers
and waterfalls are full of opportunity for
anglers, kayakers and photographers.
Get amongst them!
2. Ancient culture: The Brambuk
Aboriginal Cultural Centre brings to life
the traditions of the Jardwadjali and Djab
Wurrung aboriginal communities. Bush
tucker in the restaurant is a unique treat.
3. Fruit of the vine: Wineries dot the
landscape of the Grampians, Pyrenees
and Henty regions. Cellar doors beckon
as do the underground “drives” housing
hundreds of thousands of bottles of bubbly
at Great Western.
4. Eastern influence: Who knew that
Ararat was established by Chinese
pioneers? Find out how and why at the
Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre.
5. Tunnel vision: The fascinating Byaduk
Caves, accessed near Hamilton, are part of
the Kanawinka Geopark and a 24km lava
flow stretching from Mt Napier to Mt Eccles.
6. Art attack: The Hamilton Art Gallery
is one of Australia’s great regional galleries.
You’ll be amazed at the collection of
Australian and European artworks
and more.
7. Dizzy heights: The climb to Chataqua
Peak or the more challenging Boronia Peak
walk are worth the effort for unforgettable
views of the Grampians National Park.
8. Bring it on: For adventurers: quad
biking, rock climbing, horse riding and
bushwalking are just some of
the challenges.
9. Click-able: Come bearing your camera
to Wartook Valley and Halls Gap in the early
morning or late afternoon for a shutter-full
of grazing ‘roos and emus.
10. Spring flourish: When spring is in the
air, the Grampians’ wildflowers burst into
life along roadsides, across paddocks.
Everywhere, really.
Where a gold rush lit the spark of
Australian democracy – just one of
Ballarat’s proud legacies.
Under the Eureka flag, on the goldfields
of colonial Australia, miners stood their
ground against unfair license fees.
Democracy was born.
The bloody rising at the Eureka Stockade is
the stuff of legends, now retold in Blood on
the Southern Cross, a spectacular light and
sound show that brings to life the plight of
those pursuing their dream on the Ballarat
Goldfields in the 1800s.
The Eureka uprising lives on in the spirit of
Ballarat and in the hearts of Australians.
Today, you can see the original Eureka flag
at the Art Gallery of Ballarat and relive life
on the goldfields at Sovereign Hill, a replica
gold mining town.
The remnants of the gold rush are visible
right across this region, in the affluence
of the architecture in towns and villages
established on little more than the promise
of gold.
Now pleasure-seekers come for other
treasures like the refreshing waters or
blissful massages on offer in the Spa
Country, centred on the towns of Daylesford
and Hepburn Springs. Here, luxury and
indulgent relaxation go hand-in-hand with
gourmet local food, award-winning wines
and high-calibre eateries that never fail
to please.
