THE MISSION of the Blank Park Zoo is to inspire an
appreciation of the natural world through conservation,
education and recreation. The Zoo is operated and
funded through the Blank Park Zoo Foundation.

2007 has been an excellent year for the Blank Park Zoo. With new exhibits,
educational offerings and recreational opportunities for people of all ages,
the Zoo continues to be one of our state’s most highly attended cultural
attractions.
The Blank Park Zoo is Iowa’s only Zoo, accredited by the Association of
Zoos and Aquariums. It is funded and operated by our nonprofit Foundation,
an organization committed to advancing the Zoo’s mission of conservation,
education and recreation. This year’s highlights included:
• Attendance of over 350,000, including residents from every county in
Iowa, as well as visitors from around the nation and the world.
• Education programs serving over 75,000—a number that has more than
doubled in the past two years, including over 25,000 students visiting for
on-site field trips.
• Over 7,000 dedicated Zoo members representing over 20,000 family
members.
As we celebrate our past successes here at the Zoo, we are also looking
forward to a promising future of growth and change. The Blank Park Zoo
Foundation is fully committed to expanding the Zoo as a world-class facility,
with programs and services that extend throughout our state. The Zoo belongs
to all of us, and the Foundation would like to extend its gratitude to the many
generous donors, volunteers, community leaders and visitors who have helped
to make this year such an outstanding success. Your continued support and
interest is instrumental in making the Blank Park Zoo an institution that can

2007 HIGHLIGHTS
The Zoo continues to be one of our state’s
most highly attended cultural attractions,
with special events and exhibits serving
Iowans of all ages, abilities and cultures:
• Attendance of over 350,000 (an
increase of over 11% from last year)
• Education programs serving over
75,000 Iowans of all ages

WE GOT THE SCOOP
In the summer of 2007, thousands
of visitors got the “scoop” when the
Blank Park Zoo became the first
organization in the Midwest to host
The Scoop on Poop, a traveling exhibit based
on the popular book by Dr. Wayne Lynch. The
exhibit included over 5,000 square feet of
interactive components—the largest exhibit
ever mounted about the science of “scat.”

sustained in the wild. We are very pleased
to add these two majestic inhabitants to our
animal family.
KIDS RULE
AMERICAN BALD EAGLE
After many hours of preparation and work, the
Gratias Family Kids’ Kingdom opened to the
public on July 1. The project was designed
based on ideas from area children and includes
a play area with a tree house, slides, a music
wall, spinners, monkey bars, a mining sluice
and a fossil sand dig! Visitors may also feed
farm animals, swans, ducks and fish in this

ALDABRA TORTOISES are most active in the mornings when they spend time
browsing for food. They dig underground burrows or rest in swamps to keep cool
during the heat of the day.
OUR ZOO:
FACILITIES
Improvements to existing facilities at the Zoo in
2007 include:
• New directional signage was added to better
assist visitors in exploring the Zoo.
• In the first phase of a complete exhibit
renovation the tortoise holding facility was
remodeled.

• Design and construction began on the
renovation of the Japanese Macaque
(snow monkeys) holding facility. Additional
improvements to the exhibit will continue
and be completed in 2008.

IOWA’S ZOO:
EDUCATION PROGRAMS
The Zoo’s Education Programs had an
outstanding year, serving over 75,000 Iowa
children, adults and seniors. Programs include:
ZOO SCHOOL FIELD EXPERIENCE
Over 50 teachers participated
in a 15-hour workshop learning
about the zoo’s resources
and developing lessons to
meet curriculum standards.
Teacher participants then
brought 3,800 students to the zoo to experience
life sciences utilizing hands-on activities.
BLUE POISON DART FROG
ZOO CONNECTIONS OUTREACH
Our outreach program traveled beyond the
Zoo to serve over 23,000 Iowans in 2007,
including:
• Over 3,700 students and teachers at
area schools
• Over 2,600 students and teachers
through programs presented over the
Iowa Communications Network (ICN)
• Over 2,100 children in daycare
• Over 900 seniors at senior centers
• Over 6,000 at area libraries
• Over 7,000 at community events
throughout the year
ZOO CREW Thirty-one young people from
our community participated in Zoo Crew,
our volunteer program for ages 13-18. This
summer’s Zoo Crew logged over 2,600 hours
helping out at the Zoo.

EARLY ADVENTURES
Both Zoo Tots and Safari Tunes, our programs
for toddlers, continued to be in high demand in
2007. New in 2007, the Zoo offered Signing
Smart, TM an interactive parent/child sign language
class for children between the ages of six
months and two years. This year’s programs
served over 1,882 children—more than double
the amount last year!
The Zoo’s Education Programs continue to grow
with new programs serving adults, scouting
groups and home-school families. Thanks to generous
donations to the Education Fund, we can
continue our mission to provide dynamic, exceptional
learning experiences to Iowans of all ages.

CONSERVATION
As part of our ongoing
commitment to animal
conservation the Zoo’s
Trumpeter Swan Cygnets
were repopulated into the wild
in 2007.
JUMPING JELLIES In January of 2007, the Zoo had 13 Moon Jellyfish
on exhibit, by the end of the year that number grew to over 1,000 jellies,
most of which were grown at the Zoo. Nearly 500 of our homegrown
jellies have been sent to other AZA institutions.
CHILEAN FLAMINGOS

SPECIAL EVENTS
Throughout the year, the Blank Park Zoo hosts
a variety of special events that benefit the
community by providing entertainment and fun
activities for people of all ages. This year, over
130,000 people attended these events, which
were made possible through the generosity of
community sponsors and the dedicated support
of our volunteers.
2007 EVENTS
Events include:
• Winter Luau: A tropical evening for
adults to escape the January winter
blues.
• Family Friday Night: An exciting series
of evenings for families to have fun
at the Blank Park Zoo, with family
activities, entertainment and special
animal experiences.
• Zoo Brew: A summer evening series
when the Blank Park Zoo becomes a
playground for adults, with music, food,
drinks and activities to bring out the
kid in everyone.
• Dreamnight at the Zoo: A special
evening of fun and activities at the Zoo
for children with special healthcare
needs and their families.
• 17th Annual Night Eyes: Nearly
29,000 children and adults came to
this treat safari of safe and familyfriendly
activities, proving that the
Zoo is Central Iowa’s favorite place
to trick-or-treat.

AZA, TAG’S, SSP’S, PMP’S AND THE BPZ?
WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?
RETICULATED GIRAFFE
As an accredited member of the Association
of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the Blank Park
Zoo (BPZ) has an ethical duty to cooperatively
manage our animal collection for exhibition
needs and to join worldwide efforts to ensure
the survival of wildlife. With thousands of animal
species at AZA facilities around the world
how do institutions like the BPZ work together
to manage their animal collections?
It starts with a Taxonomic Advisory Group
(TAG)—a committee of expert advisors who
examine the conservation needs of groups of
related species. Through collection planning,
the TAG establishes priorities for research
and conservation, develops animal care and
husbandry guidelines and recommends species
for different levels of management.
The highest level of management the TAG
can recommend is a Species Survival Plan
(SSP). The mission of an SSP is to ensure the
survival of a selected species. There are 112
different species of animals covered by an SSP.
Any zoo that exhibits
these species must participate
fully by transferring
animals when requested,
reproducing or not based
upon TAG recommendations
and keeping the
committee informed of
the status of individual animals.
Population Management Plans (PMPs)
are similar to SSPs but require less intensive
management and conservation action. There
are currently 313 species with a PMP.
Collection management is key in helping
the Blank Park Zoo fulfill its mission for the
conservation of animal species and ensure the
survival of wildlife.

ANIMAL BEHAVIORAL TRAINING The animal behavioral training
program instituted last year at the Zoo continues to be successful,
with both our great cats and pinnipeds (sea lions and harbor seal.)
This year, our two female servals were added to the training
program. Behavioral training has been of enormous benefit to the
health of our animals, keeping them physically and mentally active
and more comfortable with presenting themselves for veterinary
care procedures.

talents to help the Zoo in 2007 including:
• 137 regular volunteers, ranging in age
from 11-85
• 461 volunteers for Night Eyes,
contributing over 3,000 hours

90-degree heat and tornadoes to build
the Kids’ Kingdom, contributed over
4,000 volunteer hours in just 5 days
