Welcome
Celebrate, be dazzled and intrigued
Welcome to the 5th International Festival of Glass, which we think is set
to be the best and most eclectic yet. This year’s Festival celebrates
50 years of studio glass and 400 years of glassmaking in Stourbridge,
with preeminent glassmakers from around the world sharing their skills
through demonstrations and talks. See the 2012 British Glass Biennale,
Britain’s foremost contemporary glass showcase exhibition in the new
Glasshouse Arts Centre building. Be intrigued by innovative upcycling
design solutions proposed by the teams competing in the Glass Heap
Challenge. Join a workshop and make glass yourself or bring your
own wearable glass outfit and be part of the celebratory
finale, Glasshionistas.
Come along and join in the fun, from having a go at blowing your own
glass to making your own beads. There is something exciting for all ages
to get involved in.
The Czech Perspective
Czech glass has a distinct aesthetic
that arose out of a strong tradition of
artistic training in drawing, painting
Jaroslav Polanecky, this exhibition will
showcase the work of both pioneers
and contemporary exponents who
have inherited this unique legacy.
Through a Glass Darkly
Peter David FGE (1924-2004) produced
over 100 images on glass using the
painstaking technique of stipple or
diamond-point engraving, which he
took up in the late 1960s having seen
work by Sir Lawrence Whistler (1912-
2000). This exhibition is a selection
of those glasses, complemented
by Peter’s photographs of some
of the other glasses and deep sea
animals. By profession a zoologist
and oceanographer, he took his
inspiration from the natural world and
his engravings often reflect his view of
the world.
Glass Heap Challenge Family Activities
As we all know, there is a lot of waste glass out there and not
much happening with it. This is a global problem and global
solutions are needed. Glass Heap Challenge UK will be the
first of many worldwide challenge events to find solutions.
The challenge is to work in teams within a limited number of
days and to up-cycle waste glass into a product, artwork or
installation - either functional or non-functional.
Using waste glass supplied by waste management companies
and the glass industry, teams of artists, architects, technologists
and designers from around the globe will work towards finding
ways to transform this waste glass, to show its potential and
create new paths that will lead to a more sustainable future.
Visitors to the Festival can watch work in progress, see the results
emerge and then vote for their preferred outcome.
Venue: Red House Glass Cone
Date & Time:
Challenge 20 - 24 August, 10am - 4pm
Vote Day 25 August, 10am - 5pm
Awards Evening 25 August, 6pm - 8pm
Exhibition Closes 5pm, 27 August
You might think children and glass
don’t mix, but that’s not the case.
Children of all ages are mesmerised
by the magical process of hot glass
making. What’s great about the
Glass Festival is that not only are there
plenty of opportunities to watch
makers in action, but there are lots of
great hands-on activities to have a
go at too.
Here is just a brief roundup of what
activities and some traditional fish
and chips!
On Sunday 26 August, book a place
on the tour and tile session (5 years +)
to create a fused glass tile and join in
a guided tour around the museum.
At Red House Glass Cone
you can have a go at glass engraving
throughout the weekend (8 years +)
and then on Sunday 26 August come
and make a fused glass tile and learn
all about how glass was once made
in the Cone.
On Monday 27 August, there will
be lots of great activities on offer as
the Cone celebrates 10 years as a
glass heritage visitor attraction at the
Birthday Bash Family Fun Day.

At Ruskin Glass Centre you can join in a treasure hunt, enjoy the street
entertainment, storytelling and music or have a go at the taster sessions
and craft workshops.
in his parents’ basement back in the
1970s. Bandhu’s presentation will be
implausible idea of making glass, art,
hybrid of manufacturer, school,
research center, retailer, gallery and
international artist community.
glass into the architecture.
Time: 1pm
Nick Baker - Glassmaking in America
– 404 Years On. The John Sanders
Memorial Lecture
In this year when we celebrate the
400th anniversary of glassmaking in
Stourbridge, it may be surprising to
learn that glassmaking in Colonial
America pre-dates this by four years!
Nick presents an account of the first
attempt at industrialisation in the
newly founded colony of Jamestown
in Virginia, when a primitive factory
was built in the hope of exporting
cheap glassware back to England.
